WINONA, Minn. — When Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) scores goals, she does so in bunches.

Which proved to be very good news for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team last week.

Matthews recorded her second two-goal game of the season, scoring both goals in leading the Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over St. Catherine in a battle of MIAC leaders last Saturday in St. Paul, Minn. The junior followed that effort by scoring SMU's lone goal in a heartbreaking, 2-1, nonconference loss to UW-Stout the following afternoon.

Matthews' effort not only helped the Cardinals improve to 2-0-1 in conference play and 7-1-1 overall, but also earned the junior Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday.

Matthews got the Cardinals off and running against St. Catherine last Saturday, scoring her fourth goal of the season midway through the opening half, and, after SCU knotted the game at 1-1 in the 62nd minute, Matthews would strike again, scoring the game-winner with less than 12 minutes remaining in regulation to give Saint Mary's the 2-1 victory.

Matthews followed up that two-goal effort by scoring the Cardinals' lone goal — a second-half tally — in SMU's 2-1 loss to UW-Stout, a loss that snapped Saint Mary's eight-game, season-opening unbeaten streak.

Matthews, who has now posted seven multiple-goal games in her three-year collegiate career, heads into Wednesday's MIAC showdown at Gustavus tied for the team lead with six goals on the year, while adding three assists for 15 points.
