WAVERLY, Iowa — The second day of the Saint Mary's University volleyball team's season started out the same way the first day ended — which was not good news for the Cardinals.
Â
And, unfortunately for the Cardinals, the second day of the season ended the same way the first one did as well.
Â
Saint Mary's, which went 1-1 during Friday's opening round of play at Luther College — opening with a 3-0 victory over Luther, before dropping a 3-1 decision to Edgewood — came up short both of its matches Saturday at Wartburg College, falling to Milwaukee School of Engineering 3-1 and to the host Knights 3-0.
Â
The Cardinals and Raiders split the first two sets of their match to open play on Saturday, with MSOE taking Set 1, 25-21, while the Cardinals rebounded with a 25-18 win in Set 2. From there, however, the Raiders took control, winning the marathon third set 27-25, before sealing the 3-1 win with a 25-21 win in the fourth set.
Â
Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.), coming off her first collegiate double-double of 20-kills and 10 digs against Edgewood Friday night — both career highs — posted her second straight 20-kill effort against the Raiders, while
Braidyn Ruetten chipped in eight kills.
Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) dished out 24 assists, with
Larkin Clem (Elk River, Minn.) chipping in 14 helpers, and
DeJaye Baab (Wabasha, Minn.) posted a team-best nine digs.
Â
Wartburg came out smoking in the Cardinals' second match of the day, dealing the Cardinals a 25-16 setback in the opening set. The Knights added a 25-22 win in the second set, and completed the sweet with their second 25-16 win in Set 3.
Â
McNally continued to be the offensive sparkplug for the Cardinals, recording 12 kills, four more than Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) and five in front of Elise Amerogen (Lake Elmo, Minn.). Schmidt and Clem once again shared the setting duties, posting 13 and 12 assists, respectively, with Schmidt adding 10 digs for her first double-double of the year. Baab led the Cardinals with 17 digs.
Â
The Cardinals (1-3 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, heading to Menomonie, Wis., for a 7 p.m. nonconference match against UW-Stout.
