MENOMONIE, Wis. — There was a little bit of everything for the Saint Mary's University volleyball team in its nonconference match against UW-Stout Wednesday evening.
Â
There was a come-from-behind win in the opening set, a struggle from start-to-finish in the second, and back-to-back dominating performances in the third and fourth.
Â
And the end result … a Cardinal victory.
Â
Saint Mary's, coming off a 1-3 showing in its season-opening weekend trip to Iowa, snapped its three-match losing streak, taking control in the third and fourth sets en route to a 3-1 victory over the host Blue Devils.
Â
The Cardinals had to play catch-up in the opening set, trailing 20-17 late, only to rattle off nine of the set's final 13 points for the come-from-behind 26-24 victory.
Â
There would be no comeback — or victory — in the second set, as UW-Stout was in complete control from start to finish, holding a 20-7 advantage, before settling for a 25-13 win to even the match at 1-1.
Â
That Set 2 loss proved to be a bit of wake-up call for the Cardinals, who scored the first point of the third set — and never trailed again.
Â
Saint Mary's held a 14-13 advantage early in the third set, before catching fire, scoring 11 of the final 15 points for a commanding 25-17 victory.
Â
And it was more of the same in the fourth set, as the Cardinal opened an early 7-2 lead and never let the Blue Devils closer than four points the rest of the way in sealing their second win of the season with a 25-21 triumph.
Â
Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.), who delivered a team-high 68 kills in their four matches last weekend — including a pair of then-career-high 20-kill performances — picked up right where she left off against the Blue Devils Wednesday, hammering home a new single-match, career-best 25 kills, while hitting .333.
Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) and
Larkin Clem (Elk River, Minn.) dished out 22 and 14 assists, respectively, while Clem also added a team-high three service aces and
DeJaye Baab (Wabasha, Minn.) chipped in 10 digs.
Â
The Cardinals (2-3 overall) are back in action this weekend, heading to Stevens Point, Wis., to take part in the UW-Stevens Point Invitational. SMU will face Beloit on Friday night, before squaring off against Marian and host UW-Stevens Point on Saturday.
