CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Just two games into the season, and already its obvious that the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team is a rather stingy bunch.
Â
After limiting UW-Superior to just one shot on goal in SMU's season-opening 2-0 win last Wednesday, the Cardinal stifling defense was at it again Saturday against Coe — once again limiting their opponent to just a single shot on net.
Â
And for the second straight game,
Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) had no trouble making that lone save, as the Cardinals — thanks in part to a
Mikayla McCart (Council Bluffs, Iowa) penalty kick goal in the 73rd minute — collected their second straight shutout win, blanking the Kohawks 1-0.
Â
After a scoreless first half, in which Saint Mary's held a commanding 11-1 advantage in shots — including 4-1 in shots on goal — the Cardinals turned up the offensive heat a notch over the game's final 45 minutes, outshooting Coe 12-0 and holding a 5-0 edge in SOG.
Â
Saint Mary's finally broke through with less than 17 minutes remaining in regulation, as McCart converted on a penalty kick for her first collegiate goal — sealing SMU's second straight victory.
Â
The Cardinals (2-0-0 overall) are back in action on Monday, making their home debut when they entertain Martin Luther in a 5 p.m. nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
