• LAST NIGHT: The Cardinals got goals from four different players — and four assists from Callahan Nauss (Wayzata, Minn.) — en route to a 4-2 MIAC win over Hamline at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Cardinals’ four goals against Hamline came from four different players. Saint Mary’s has yet to have a player score two or more goals in a game this season.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH II: Saint Mary’s eight points against UW-Stout on Jan. 14 (3 goals, 5 assists) came from eight different players, while seven players accounted for SMU’s eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) the following evening against UW-River Falls.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) enters Saturday’s rematch against Hamline leading the team with five goals, one more than Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.) and Gabe Potyk (Lake Orion, Mich.). Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa), Ryan Stoynich (Calgary, Alberta), and Kasyn Kruse (Luverne, Minn.) have all chipped in four goals.
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: The Cardinals boast seven players who have scored their first collegiate goals this season — Tharaldson, Kruse, Paradise, Poellinger, Potyk, Nathan Solis (Salve, Mich.), and Matt Hutton (Carmel, Ind.).
• LENDING A HAND: Nauss’ four assists against Hamline Friday night marked the first time Saint Mary’s has had a player record four helpers in a game since Jack Stang achieved the feat against Augsburg on Jan. 31, 2020. … The four-assist night was the first of Nauss’ collegiate career.
• LENDING A HAND, TAKE 2: With his four assists vs. Hamline, Nauss moved into a tie for the team lead with six helpers, joining Schroder, Hutton, and Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.). Poellinger, Stoynich, Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.), and Trevor Wilhelm (St. Louis, Mo.) are all second with four assists each. … Twelve other Cardinals have collected at least one helper through 11 games.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Schroder is the team’s points leader with nine (3 G, 6 A), one more than Winter (5 G, 3 A), Poellinger (4 G, 4 A), Hutton (2 G, 6 A), and Lindauer (2 G, 5 A).
• MULTIPLE-POINT PERFORMANCES: The Cardinals have had 12 players post multiple-point games this season — led by Stoynich with three multiple-point games, and Hutton and Winter with two each.
• NETTING THE GAME-WINNER: Saint Mary’s six game-winning goals this season have come from six different players — Poellinger, Schroder, Stoynich, Kruse, Potyk, and Tyson Liverance (Burford, Ontario).
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) picked up his second straight win in goal — in his second straight start of the season — stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced against Hamline Friday. … Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.), who recorded his first collegiate win with a career-high 35-save effort against Saint John’s on Nov. 18, equaled that career-high with 35 saves against MSOE on Dec. 7. … Sankner has stopped 30 or more shots four times this season. Sankner heads into Saturday’s game against UW-River Falls carrying a 2.95 goals-against-average and .910 save percentage. … A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) notched his first collegiate win on Nov. 5, making 28 saves in SMU’s 4-3 win over UW-Superior. Ruskowski followed up that effort by stopping a career-best 43 shots in the Cardinals’ 4-1 loss to UW-Eau Claire the following evening. … Ruskowski owns a 4.57 GAA and an .860 save percentage.
• AS A TEAM: The Cardinals have scored 38 goals through their first 16 games, including nine on the power-play. Saint Mary’s has scored a season-high four goals three time this season — beating Hamline 4-2 on Friday, UW-Superior 4-3 on Nov. 5, and dropping St. Olaf 4-1 on Dec. 3.
• FINDING THEIR MIAC GROOVE: The Cardinals’ 4-2 win over Hamline was their third straight conference win — having swept St. Olaf on Dec. 3-4. … SMU’s sweep of the Oles on Dec. 3-4 marked its first conference sweep since taking two from Concordia (3-2, 5-0) on Nov. 15-16, 2019.
• STREAKING ALONG: With their win over Hamline, Saint Mary’s has now won two straight and four of their last six. … The Cardinals picked up their first win of the season on Nov. 5, snapping a season-opening three-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over UW-Superior. SMU put an end to its second three-game losing with their 2-1 victory over Saint John’s on Nov. 18, and last Saturday’s 3-1 win over UW-River Falls put an end to a two-game losing streak.
• FIRST-GOAL SUCCESS: In 12 of Saint Mary’s first 16 games this season, the team that has scored first has gone on to win. The Cardinals are 3-1-0 when scoring first, while going 2-8-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 3-3 tie against Lawrence on Nov. 23 was third OT contest this season. SMU dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Saint John’s on Nov. 20, while falling 4-3 in OT to Lake Forest in its season-opener on Nov. Oct. 29.
