WINONA, Minn. — For the second time in as many nights, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team spotted Hamline a two-goal lead when the teams squared off Saturday in the second game of their two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series.
Â
And, for the second time in as many nights, the Cardinals found themselves trailing by two heading into the game's final 20-minute period.
Â
Unlike Friday's dramatic, come-from-behind 3-2 win, however — in which the Cardinals scored three times in the third period — this time around, there would be no third-period heroic, as Hamline dealt Saint Mary's a 4-1 setback at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Â
Hamline did not waste any time seizing control of the teams' rematch, getting goals from Amanda Nylander and Cheyenne in the game's first six minutes to take a quick, 2-0 advantage.
Â
The Cardinals managed to cut the deficit in half 2:34 into the second period on a power-play goal
Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.) — off assists from
Delaney Wolf (Bismarck, N.D.) and
Carson Sheridan (Waunakee, Wis.) — only to have the Pipers answer five minutes later when Jordan Hansen beat Cardinal goalie
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) for a 3-1 cushion.
Â
The Pipers' offense remained in high gear in the third period, getting a goal from Sophie Rausch — her 10th of the season — to seal the win for HU.
Â
Ziakas finished with 23 saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Mckenna Hulslander kicked out 32 of the Cardinals' 33 shots in goal for Hamline
Â
The Cardinals (6-2-0 MIAC, 9-6-0 overall) are back in action next weekend with a pair of games against league-leading and nationally ranked Gustavus. SMU and GAC will square off at 7 p.m. at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena on Friday, before heading to the Don Roberts Ice Arena in St. Peter, Minn., for Saturday's 2 p.m. rematch.
