• 1, 2: Caroline Gearin (Osceola, Wis.) kicked off the Cardinals’ indoor track and field season in grand fashion last Saturday, picking up a first- and second-place finish at the UW-Superior Twin Ports Open. Gearin, the reigning MIAC outdoor pole vault champion, cleared 3.19 meters to win the pole vault title, while clocking a 1:47.35 second-place time in the 600.
• 3 + 2: Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) and Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) each recorded their first collegiate multiple-point games last Friday. Tharaldson had three assists for the SMU men in its 4-2 win over Hamline, while Braun assisted on two of the Cardinal women’s three goals in their 3-2 victory over the Pipers.
• 3: The Saint Mary’s women’s hockey team’s three goals in last Friday’s 3-2 win over Hamline were all “firsts.” Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.) scored her first goal of the season, Abigail Painovich (Hinckley, Minn.) netted her first collegiate goal, and Delaney Wolf (Bismarck, N.D.) tallied her first game-winning goal of the season.
• 3 x 2: Both the Saint Mary’s men’s and women’s hockey team’s put up three-goal periods in their wins over Hamline last Friday. The Cardinal men scored three times in the game’s opening 20 minutes en route to a 4-2 victory, while the SMU women’s netted three goals in the third period, erasing a two-goal deficit to beat the Pipers 3-2.
• 3 > 10: The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team had three players score in double figures in last Saturday’s 64-57 loss to Macalester. Jada Biermeier (Eau Claire, Wis.) led the way for the Cardinals, netting 12 points, followed by 11 from Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) and 10 from Ashley Streveler (Colby, Wis.)
• 4: Callahan Nauss (Wayzata, Minn.) picked up his first collegiate multiple-point game in the Cardinal men’s hockey team’s 4-2 win over Hamline — assisting on all four of SMU’s goals. It was the Cardinals’ first four-assist game since Jack Stang achieved the feat with four helpers against Augsburg on Jan. 31, 2020.
• 4: Jada Biermeier (Eau Claire, Wis.) has scored 10 or more points in four of the Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team’s last five games — including a team-high 12 points against Macalester last Saturday. Biermeier has posted three 12-point performances and a 16-point effort against Saint Benedict during that five-game span.
• 5: The Saint Mary’s men’s hockey team’s five goals in last weekend’s split against Hamline came from five different players. Nathan Solis (Salve, Mich.), Nick Kiemel (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Gabe Potyk (Lake Orion, Mich.), and Thomas Magnavite (Chicago, Ill.) scored in last Friday’s 4-2 win, while Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.) netted SMU’s lone goal in its 2-1 loss the following night.
• 7: With their 3-2 victory over Hamline last Friday, seven of the SMU women’s hockey team’s nine wins have been by two goals or less.
• 8: Last Saturday’s four-point, 76-72 loss to Macalester marked the eighth time in the SMU men’s basketball team’s 15 games that has been decided by 11 points or less — including both meetings against Macalester.
• 9:45.09: Quinn Steinbrecher (Holmen, Wis.) recorded a time of 9:45:09 to win the 3000 for the SMU men’s track and field team at last Saturday’s UW-Superior Twin Ports Open.
• 10: The Cardinal men’s basketball team drained 10 3-pointers in last Saturday’s 76-72 loss to Macalester. The 10 treys marked the second time this season SMU has reached double figures in 3-pointers, and was two shy of its season high.
• 17: The Cardinal track and field teams combined to record 17 Top 5 finishes at the UW-Superior Twin Ports Open last Saturday — including first-place showings by Caroline Gearin (Osceola, Wis.), Sydney Klausler (Lakeville, Minn.), and Quinn Steinbrecher (Holmen, Wis.).
• 19 x 2: Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) scored a team-high 19 points in the SMU men’s basketball team’s 80-53 loss to Saint John’s last Wednesday, while Brooklyn Paulson (Holmen, Wis.) matched that team-high 19-point effort in the Cardinal women’s basketball team’s 69-53 loss to Saint Benedict that same day.
• 23: Caden Freetly (Farmington, Minn.) recorded a career-high 23 points — including 17 in the second half — in the SMU men’s basketball team’s four-point, 76-72 loss to Macalester last Saturday.
• 23 x 2: Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) made 23 saves in both of the Saint Mary’s women’s hockey team’s games against Hamline last weekend.
• 32: Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) stopped a season-high 32 shots in the Cardinal men’s hockey team’s 2-1 loss to Hamline last Saturday. The 32-save effort was one shy of his career-best.
• 42: Saint Mary’s had 42 student-athletes earned Academic All-MIAC honors, the league office announced last Wednesday. The SMU women’s soccer team led the way with 12 honorees, followed by men’s soccer and volleyball with 11, women’s cross country with five, and men’s cross country with three.
• 53: The Cardinal men’s and women’s basketball teams each scored 53 points in their conference games last Wednesday — the SMU men against Saint John’s and the SMU women vs. Saint Benedict. It was the second time this season the two teams have netted the same amount of points on the same day — also achieving the feat with 63-point efforts against St. Olaf on Dec. 8.
