STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Two proved to be the magic number for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team this weekend.
Two games, two goals, two wins.
Fresh off a 2-1 conference win over Bethel on Saturday, the Cardinals turned around and put up a second straight two-goal performance the following afternoon en route to a 2-0 nonconference win over UW-Stevens Point.
It took Saint Mary's more than 55 minutes to get their offense on track against the Pointers, but once they did, the Cardinals were unstoppable.
After a scoreless first half, Saint Mary's finally broke through in the 56th minute when
Megan Trindle (Castle Rock, Colo.) floated a shot over the head of Pointer goalkeeper Miranda Nieman for her first goal of the season — and a 1-0 Cardinal lead.
A lead SMU would not relinquish.
Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah) gave the Cardinals some breathing room with her second of the season, converting on a penalty kick just nine minutes after Trindle's tally.
And two goals were more than enough, thanks in part to the play of freshman goalkeeper
Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa).
Peckosh, making her second collegiate start, stopped all five shots she faced — including three in the first half — en route to her first shutout in a Cardinal uniform.
The Cardinals (7-5-2 overall) will play their final nonconference game of the season on Wednesday, traveling to Grinnell, Iowa, for a 4 p.m. matchup against Grinnell.
