SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their nonconference showdown at UW-Stevens Point sitting at 6-5-2 overall, including 3-3-2 in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s got single goals in each half — the first by Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) and the second by Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.) — as the Cardinals held on for a 2-1 conference win over Bethel Saturday afternoon in Arden Hills, Minn.
• ON THE ROAD, AGAIN: Sunday’s game against UW-Stevens Point is the third of four straight road games for the Cardinals, who are just 1-4-0 away from Ochrymowycz Field this season. On the flip side, Saint Mary’s is 9-2-4 in its last 15 home games — including 4-1-2 this season.
• STEPPING OUT: The Cardinals will step out of conference play for their next two contests — heading to UW-Stevens Point on Sunday and then traveling to Grinnell on Wednesday. SMU is 3-2-0 in its five nonconference games thus far this season.
• STREAK-SNAPPER: The Cardinals’ 3-0 loss to St. Olaf last Wednesday snapped their season-high five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2). With their win over Bethel on Saturday, Saint Mary’s improved to 4-1-2 in its last seven contests.
• THROWING UP ZEOES: Nine of Saint Mary’s 13 games have been decided by shutout. The Cardinals have beaten UM-Morris (3-0), Lawrence (2-0), Gustavus (1-0), and UW-Stout (1-0), while falling to Wartburg (1-0), Carleton (2-0), Saint Benedict (3-0), and St. Olaf (3-0), and tying Augsburg (0-0). … SMU’s wins over UM-Morris and Lawrence marked the second straight season in which the Cardinals opened the season with back-to-back shutout wins.
• NO GOALS: Saint Mary’s 0-0 tie against Augsburg last Saturday was its third 0-0 tie in the last two seasons. The Cardinals battled both Saint Benedict and St. Scholastica to 0-0 draws a year ago.
• NAILBITERS: Seven of SMU’s last eight games have been decided by one goal or less — the Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision to Luther on Sept. 21, battled St. Catherine to a 1-1 draw three days later, beat Gustavus (1-0), Concordia (2-1), UW-Stout (1-0), and tied Augsburg (0-0) — before falling to St. Olaf 3-0 last Wednesday.
• CAREER FIRSTS: The Cardinals have had four players record their first collegiate goals this season — the most recent off the foot of Munson against UW-Stout on Wednesday. Along with Munson’s tally, Malerie Williams (Osseo, Minn.) tallied her first as a Cardinal against St. Catherine on Sept. 24, and Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.) and Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) both recorded their first goals in a Cardinal uniform against UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• LEADERS OF THE PACK: With their goals against Bethel on Saturday, Skoruppa and McKinney moved into a tie with Haddy Falkman (Waconia, Minn.) for the team lead in goals with three. … Munson, Williams, and Lahart, and Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.) own SMU’s other four goals.
• LENDING A HAND: Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.) collected her third and fourth assists of the season against Bethel Saturday, pushing her past Lauren Ashe (Beaverton, Ore.) and into the team lead with four helpers. Ashe is second with three, followed by Falkman with two, while McKinney, Skoruppa, and Williams have also collected a helper this season.
• POINT PRODUCER: Along with her team-leading three goals, Falkman also leads the team in points with eight (3 G, 2 A), one in front of both McKinney (3 G, 1 A) and Skoruppa (3 G, 1 A). Leonard (0 G, 4 A) is next up with four points, followed by Williams (1 G, 1 A), and Ashe (0 G, 3 A) with three each.
• MULTIPLE-POINTS: Falkman’s two-goal effort against Concordia on Oct. 1 marked the second time in her career that she has scored two goals in a game. … Leonard and Ashe have both picked up their first collegiate two-assist games this season. Leonard assisted on both SMU goals against Bethel on Saturday, while Ashe collected two helpers against Concordia on Oct. 1. … Skoruppa posted her first career three-point game with a goal and an assist against UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) has appeared in all 13 games in goal — including 11 starts — owning a 1.14 goals-against-average and .831 save percentage. … Nguyen picked up her fourth shutout of the season, and 13th of her collegiate career, with five saves against Augsburg on Oct. 8. … Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has appeared in three games (95:05 minutes), stopping all five shots she’s faced, while Megan Nadal (Chino, Calif.) stopped seven of the eight shots she faced in her lone appearance in goal (45:00 minutes).
• BUSY NIGHT: Nguyen made a career-high 12 saves in SMU’s 1-1 tie against St. Catherine on Sept. 24. It was the second time this season the senior has stopped 10 or more shots in a game, having posted a 10-save effort against Saint Benedict on Sept. 17. … Nguyen has now made 10 or more saves in each of the Cardinals’ last two meetings against St. Catherine, owning 10 saves in last season’s 2-1 win over the Wildcats.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Fueled by her career-high 12-save effort against St. Catherine last Saturday, Nguyen was named MIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 19-25. It was the second time in her career that the senior earned the conference’s weekly honor.
• GOALKEEPING FIRSTS: Nadal made her first collegiate start on Sept. 21 against Luther, stopping seven first-half shots. … Peckosh made her first collegiate start against UW-Stout on Oct. 5, stopping both Blue Devil shots she faced in 45:00 of play, while making her first appearance in a Cardinal uniform on Sept. 17, making three saves in 22 minutes of relief in SMU’s 3-0 loss to Saint Benedict.
• AS A TEAM: The Cardinals have scored nine of their 12 goals this season in the second half. … Saint Mary’s opponents own a 166-137 advantage in shot attempts through 13 games — including 90-58 in shots on goal. … SMU recorded season-highs in goals (3), assists (3), points (9), shots (23), and shots on goal (11) in its 3-0, season-opening win over UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• CLOSE CALLS: With their 2-1 win over Concordia on Oct. 1, the Cardinals have now won four straight against the Cobbers — all by one goal. In fact, each of the last seven meetings between the two teams have been settled by one goal or less, with SMU going 4-2-1 in those seven contests.
• A YEAR AGO: The Cardinals closed out the 2021 season with a 7-3-1 record in MIAC play and a 13-5-2 overall record — reaching the MIAC Tournament semifinals, where they dropped a 3-2 decision to second-seeded Saint Benedict. … The Cardinals’ seven conference wins are the most since 1995, when the Cardinals went 7-2-1, while SMU’s 13 overall victories are the most since the 2005 team finished 13-5-0. … Saint Mary’s 10-1-1 start to the season was its best start since opening the 1991 season 11-1-0. That 1991 team went on to finish 14-4-0 and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, falling to UC-San Diego in the opening round. … The Cardinals also opened the 1988 season 11-1-0 — it’s the best 12-game start in program history.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The NCAA implemented a new rule beginning with the 2022 that will eliminate all overtimes in regular-season games. Games that are deadlocked following the scheduled 90 minute will go in the books as ties. Once in post-season, if a game is tied following regulation, there will be two, 10-minute overtime periods — with no golden goal — followed by a shootout if the game is still tied.

UW-STEVENS POINT POINTERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Pointers head into Sunday’s nonconference contest against Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-6-4 overall, while sporting a 1-1-2 mark in WIAC action.
• LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stevens Point got a goal from Shea-Lynn Gerred less than two minutes into the second half, as the Pointers rallied for a 1-1 WIAC tie on the road against UW-River Falls Saturday in River Falls, Wis.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Pointers have collected three of their four wins this season on their home field. UW-Stevens Point is 3-3-1 at home, while sporting a 1-3-3 mark away from Point Soccer Bowl. … Sunday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the first of back-to-back home games for the Pointers — their final two home contests of the season. UW-SP closes out the year with road games at UW-Platteville next Saturday and at UW-Stout on Oct. 29.
• NAILBITERS: Twelve of UW-Stevens Point’s 13 games this season have been decided by two goals or less — the lone exception, the Pointers’ 3-0 win over St. Norbert on Sept. 18. … Three of the Pointers’ six losses have been one-goal, shutout decisions.
• MIAC NOT TOO KING: The Pointers are winless (0-2-1) in their first three meetings against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference — and have yet to score a goal against an MIAC foe. UW-SP heads into Sunday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s having lost to St. Catherine (2-0) and St. Olaf (1-0), while battling Hamline to a 0-0 draw.
• FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET: Katie Frierdich enters Sunday’s contest against Saint Mary’s leading the team with five goals, one more than Gerred, and two in front of Gabby Dunn and Gina Wasniewski. Cass Kiltzke has scored twice, while Lauren Johnson and Olivia Piloni owns UW-SP’s other two goals.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Frierdich and Gerred share the team lead in assists with four each, while Dunn and Wasniewski both own a pair of helpers.
• POINT PRODUCTION: UW-Stevens Point has two players sitting with 10 or more points through 14 games — Frierdich leads the way with 14 and Gerred is close behind with 12.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Miranda Nieman and Bergen Beversdorf have both seen time in goal for the Pointers this season. Nieman has started 12 of the team’s 14 contests (1049:01 minutes), compiling a 1.31 goals-against-average and .881 save percentage, while Beversdorf boasts a 2.13 GAA and .688 save percentage in three appearances (210:59). … Nieman has stopped 98 of the 109 shots she’s faced and owns a pair of shutouts.
