SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals, who closed out the 2021-22 season with a 13-10-2 overall record — head into their rematch with Lake Forest sitting at 0-1-0 overall.
• LAST TIME OUT: Lake Forest scored the game’s final two goals — one early in the second period and the other late in the third — in dealing the Cardinals a 4-2, season-opening loss Friday evening at Alumni Memorial Arena in Lake Forest, Ill.
• RACKING UP THE W’s: The Cardinals 13 wins in 2021-22 were the most since the 2003-04 season, when Saint Mary’s finished 15-9-2, and the sixth-most victories in program history.
• CLOSE CALLS CONTINUE: With their 4-2 loss to Lake Forest on Friday, 17 of SMU’s last 25 games have been decided by two goals or less — including 11 of their last 13 wins.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) and Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) scored SMU’s two goals against Lake Forest on Friday. Kingston netted the Cardinals’ first goal of the 2022-23 season — just 58 seconds into the opening period against the Foresters. … Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) led the team in goals a year ago with five, one more than Braun, Kingston, Morgan Leib (Farmington Hills, Mich.), Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.), and Elie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.).
• JOINING THE CROWD: Saint Mary’s closed out last season with 10 players netting their first goals in a Cardinal uniform — Braun, Hegdahl, Kingston, Urlaub, Polzin, Leib, Kurkowski, Abigail Painovich (Hinckley, Minn.), Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.), and Nina Langley (Chaska, Minn.).
• LENDING A HAND: Polzin, Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.), and Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) picked up SMU’s three assists vs. the Foresters on Friday.
• POINT PRODUCERS: The Cardinals’ two goals and three assists Friday evening came from five different players.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.), who compiled a 2.33 GAA and .920 save % a year ago, stopped 31 of the 35 shots she faced against Lake Forest on Friday — including making 12 saves in both the first and third periods. … Keeley kicked out a career-high 44 Concordia shots in SMU’s 3-1 win over the Cobbers on Nov. 13, 2021.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Keeley’s 19 save effort in SMU’s 0-0 tie against Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 was her third collegiate shutout, having posted a pair of shutouts during her freshman season.
• FIRST-GOAL ADVANTAGE: Unlike a year ago, when the team that scored first won 21 of the Cardinals’ 25 games, the team that scored first on Friday (Saint Mary’s) did not win.
LAKE FOREST FORESTERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Foresters, who closed out the 2021-22 season with a 15-10-0 overall record, including a 13-3-0 mark in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play, are 1-0-0 heading into Saturday’s rematch with Saint Mary’s.
