DULUTH, Minn. — For the second year in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team closed out its regular-season schedule against St. Scholastica.
Â
And for the second year in a row, the Cardinals squared off against the Saints having already received an invitation to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's six-team post-season gala.
Â
Unlike a year ago, however — when the Saints dashed any hopes of the Cardinals claiming a share of the conference's regular-season title with a 2-1 victory — this time around, Saint Mary's made sure to head into post-season play on a winning note.
Â
The Cardinals — who locked up their second straight MIAC Playoff berth with a dramatic 2-0 win over Macalester on Tuesday — got a goal from
Genesis Capacio (Las Vegas, Nev.) in the 75th minute to earn a 1-0 victory over the Saints.
Â
And with that regular season-ending, momentum-building victory tucked away, the Cardinals can turn their focus to their MIAC Playoff-opener against St. Olaf.
Â
The Oles dropped their regular-season finale against St. Catherine on Saturday, 2-1, to finish as the No. 4 seed in the six-team conference tourney. St. Olaf will host the Cardinals at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in Northfield, Minn.
Â
Saturday's contest was a defensive battle from start-to-finish, with neither team able to generate much offense.
Â
Saint Mary's claimed the only two shot attempts in the opening half — including one on goal — as the teams headed into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
Â
It was more of the same in the second half — until the 75th minute, that is.
Â
Capacio picked the perfect time to net her first goal of the season, beating CSS goalkeeper Gracie Meagher for the game's only goal.
Â
While Capacio provided the offensive spark, the Cardinal defenders were the stars of the game, limiting the Saints to just three second-half shot attempts — none of which found their way to SMU goalkeeper
Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.), who did not have to make a save in recording shutout No. 7 on the year.
Â
With the win — their sixth straight — the Cardinals close out the conference schedule with a 6-3-2 mark, while heading to Northfield, Minn., for Tuesday's MIAC opener sitting at 11-5-2 overall.
