SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their regular-season conference finale at St. Scholastica sitting at 10-5-2 overall, including 5-3-2 in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s got second-half goals from Haddy Falkman (Waconia, Minn.) and Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.), and a six-save shutout by goalkeeper Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.), as the Cardinals locked up an MIAC Playoff berth with a 2-0 win over Macalester last Tuesday at Ochrymowycz Field.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Wednesday’s game against Macalester was the second straight home game for the Cardinals. Saint Mary’s is 10-2-4 in its last 16 home games, including 5-1-2 this season.
• STREAKING ALONG: The Cardinals’ 2-0 win over Macalester on Tuesday was their fifth straight victory. After opening the season 2-4-0, SMU is now 8-1-2 in its last 11 games — bookending a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2) with its current season-high five-game winning streak. The Cardinals’ lone loss during its current 11-game stretch was a 3-0 setback to St. Olaf on Oct. 12.
• POST-SEASON PICTURE: With their 2-0 win over Macalester on Tuesday, the Cardinals locked up their second-straight MIAC Playoff berth and will enter post-season play as the No. 5 seed. SMU will open post-season play on the road on Nov. 1 at the home of the No. 4 seed, which will be determined following Saturday’s action. … SMU made its first MIAC Playoff appearance in program history a year ago, beating St. Scholastica on penalty kicks in the opening round, before falling to Saint Benedict 3-2 in the semifinals.
• NEW DAY, SAME OUTCOME: Saint Mary’s 2-0 victory over Macalester on Tuesday marked the Cardinals’ fourth straight 2-0 victory — SMU had beaten UW-Stevens Point, Grinnell, and Hamline by that same 2-0 outcome in its previous three contests.
• THROWING UP ZEROS: Thirteen of Saint Mary’s 17 games have been decided by shutout — including eight of SMU’s 10 wins. The Cardinals have beaten UM-Morris (3-0), Lawrence (2-0), Gustavus (1-0), UW-Stout (1-0), UW-Stevens Point (2-0), Grinnell (2-0), Hamline (2-0), and Macalester (2-0), while falling to Wartburg (1-0), Carleton (2-0), Saint Benedict (3-0), and St. Olaf (3-0), and tying Augsburg (0-0). … SMU’s wins over UM-Morris and Lawrence marked the second straight season in which the Cardinals opened the season with back-to-back shutout wins.
• CAREER FIRSTS: The Cardinals have had five players record their first collegiate goals this season — the most recent off the foot of Leonard against Grinnell on Oct. 19. Along with Leonard’s tally, Samantha Munson scored her first SMU goal against UW-Stout on Oct. 5, Malerie Williams (Osseo, Minn.) netted her first as a Cardinal against St. Catherine on Sept. 24, and Lahart and Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) both recorded their first goals in a Cardinal uniform against UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• LEADER OF THE PACK: With her goal against Macalester on Tuesday, Falkman regained the team lead in goals with five, one more than Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.). Skoruppa is third on the team with three goals, followed by Lahart, Leonard, and Munson with two each. Trindle, Williams, and Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.) own SMU’s other three goals.
• LENDING A HAND: Leonard collected her third and fourth assists of the season against Bethel on Oct. 15, pushing her past Lauren Ashe (Beaverton, Ore.) and into the team lead in assists. Ashe and Falkman are second with three helpers, followed by Williams with two, while McKinney and Skoruppa have also collected an assist this season.
• POINT PRODUCER: Along with her team-leading five goals, Falkman also leads the team in points with 13 (5 G, 3 A), four in front of McKinney (4 G, 1 A) and five in front of Leonard (2 G, 4 A). Skoruppa is sitting fourth with seven points (3 G, 1 A), with Munson (2 G, 0 A) and Lahart (2 G, 0 A) each boasting four points.
• MULTIPLE-POINTS: Falkman’s two-goal effort against Concordia on Oct. 1 marked the second time in her career that she has scored two goals in a game. Along with her two-goal game, Falkman also owns a multiple-assist effort, picking up helpers on two of SMU’s three goals against UM-Morris on Sept. 1, as well as a three-point (1 G, 1A) performance against Macalester on Tuesday. … Leonard and Ashe have both recorded their first collegiate two-assist games this season. Leonard assisted on both SMU goals against Bethel on Oct. 15, while Ashe collected two helpers against Concordia on Oct. 1. … Skoruppa posted her first career three-point game with a goal and an assist against UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) has appeared in 16 of SMU’s 17 games in goal — including 14 starts — owning a 0.93 goals-against-average and .854 save percentage. … Nguyen picked up her sixth shutout of the season, and 15th of her collegiate career, with six saves against Macalester on Tuesday. … Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has appeared in four games (185:05 minutes) — including two starts — and has not allowed a goal, stopping all 13 shots she’s faced, while Megan Nadal (Chino, Calif.) has stopped nine of the 10 shots she faced in her two appearance in goal (45:00 minutes).
• BUSY NIGHT: Nguyen made a career-high 12 saves in SMU’s 1-1 tie against St. Catherine on Sept. 24. It was the second time this season the senior has stopped 10 or more shots in a game, having posted a 10-save effort against Saint Benedict on Sept. 17. … Nguyen has now made 10 or more saves in each of the Cardinals’ last two meetings against St. Catherine, owning 10 saves in last season’s 2-1 win over the Wildcats.
• WEEKLY HONOR: Fueled by her career-high 12-save effort against St. Catherine last Saturday, Nguyen was named MIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 19-25. It was the second time in her career that the senior earned the conference’s weekly honor.
• GOALKEEPING FIRSTS: Peckosh stopped a career-high eight shots in racking up career shutout No. 1 against UW-Stevens Point last Sunday. … Peckosh made her first collegiate start against UW-Stout on Oct. 5, stopping both Blue Devil shots she faced in 45:00 of play, while making her first appearance in a Cardinal uniform on Sept. 17, making three saves in 22 minutes of relief in SMU’s 3-0 loss to Saint Benedict. … Nadal made her first collegiate start on Sept. 21 against Luther, stopping seven first-half shots.
• AS A TEAM: The Cardinals have scored 13 of their 20 goals this season in the second half. … Saint Mary’s opponents own a 207-177 advantage in shot attempts through 17 games — including 113-78 in shots on goal. … SMU recorded season-highs in goals (3), assists (3), points (9), shots (23), and shots on goal (11) in its 3-0, season-opening win over UM-Morris on Sept. 1.
• CLOSE CALLS: With their 2-1 win over Concordia on Oct. 1, the Cardinals have now won four straight against the Cobbers — all by one goal. In fact, each of the last seven meetings between the two teams have been settled by one goal or less, with SMU going 4-2-1 in those seven contests.
• NO GOALS: Saint Mary’s 0-0 tie against Augsburg on Oct. 8 was its third 0-0 tie in the last two seasons. The Cardinals battled both Saint Benedict and St. Scholastica to 0-0 draws a year ago.
ST. SCHOLASTICA SAINTS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Saints head into their 2022 season finale against Saint Mary’s sitting at 2-10-5 overall, including a 1-6-3 showing in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Benedict scored three unanswered goals — including two in the first half — as the Bennies dealt the Saints a 3-1 conference setback Tuesday afternoon in St. Joseph, Minn.
• LIMPING IN: With its 3-1 loss to Saint Benedict on Tuesday, St. Scholastica saw its winless streak climb to five (0-3-2). CSS has won just once over its past 12 contests, going 1-7-5 — the lone win, a 3-1 victory over Hamline on Oct. 8.
• PLENTY OF TIES: The Saints have played five games decided in a draw — including four on their home field. CSS has tied Concordia (0-0), Bethel (1-1), Macalester (0-0), UW-River Falls (1-1), and UW-Superior (0-0).
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Ten of St. Scholastica’s 17 games this season have been decided by shutout. CSS is 1-6-3 in those 10 contests, the lone win a 4-0 blanking of Finlandia on Sept. 11.
• GOAL-SCORING LEADER: Kaitlyn Sautter has scored a team-high six goals. Sautter has accounted for six of the team’s eight goals this season, while Tenley Voth is second on the team with three goals. Hunter Zamzow has scored twice, with Alexa Ickert, Ellie Keillor, and Ella Stritesky netting CSS’s other three goals. … Sautter scored three of her six goals against Finlandia on Sept. 11.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Voth is the only player with more than one assist this season, owning two helpers. Ella Achterkirch, Brooke Fieldson, Payton Kolies, Elle Peterson, and Abigail Shrode own the Saints’ other five assists.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Fueled by her team-leading six goals, Sautter is the team’s points leader with 12, followed by Voth with eight (3 G, 2 A) and Zamzow with four (2 G, 0 A).
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: St. Scholastica has used four different goalkeepers this season, led by Gracie Meagher, who has started 10 of the team’s 17 games — compiling a 1.95 goals-against-average and .716 save percentage. Brianna Jorgenson has made five starts and owns a 2.94 GAA and .702 save percentage, while Josie Rowley (0.68 GAA, .917 save %) has appeared in three games — including one start — and Jocelyn Radke stopped all four shots she faced in her lone start. … Meagher and Jorgenson have each recorded a season-high eight-save performance — Meagher vs. Hamline on Oct. 8 and Jorgenson vs. UW-Whitewater on Sept. 9.
• BY THE NUMBERS: St. Scholastica has scored nine of its 14 goals in the second half.
