WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team is on fire, as the Cardinals extended their winning streak to three straight Wednesday afternoon with a 1-0 nonconference victory over UW-Stout.
Eighty percent of the Cardinals' goals this season have come in the second half, but freshman
Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah) decided to skewer that stat, netting her first collegiate goal in the 33rd minute — off an assist from
Lauren Ashe (Beaverton, Ore.) — to put the Cardinals on top, 1-0, heading into the break.
Coming back from the intermission, the Cardinals were determined to complete the shutout — which is exactly what they did.
SMU created its fair share of chances in the game's final 45 minutes, attempting seven shots, including four on goal, but the Cardinals were unable to extend their one-goal advantage.
With
Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and
Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) guarding the Cardinal goal, however, one goal was more than enough.
Peckosh made her second appearance in goal for the Cardinals — and her first collegiate start — stopping both first-half shots she faced. Nguyen, meanwhile, took over in goal in the second half and matched Peckosh's two saves, as the duo combined for SMU's fourth shutout win of the season.
The Cardinals (5-4-1 overall) will be back on the field on Saturday at 1 p.m., as they host Augsburg in a conference matchup at Ochrymowycz Field.
