Cardinals battle Augsburg to 0-0 draw

WINONA, Minn. — A chilly, breezy day at Ochrymowycz Field could not keep the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team from heating up the field, as they added another decision to their now five-game unbeaten streak.

The Cardinals battled Augsburg to a 0-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference stalemate Saturday afternoon — pushing Saint Mary's record to 3-0-2 over its last five contests.

Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.) recorded SMU's only shot on goal in the first half, sending the ball flying over the heads of the Augsburg defenders, only to be stopped short by Auggie goalie Iz Shuster.

The defensive battle resumed after the break, with neither team able to find the back of the net — but it certainly wasn't for lack of effort or opportunity.

SMU recorded seven shots in the second half — four of them coming within the last five minutes of the game — as the Cardinals tried unsuccessfully to put the ball between the posts before time ran out.

Alexis Nguyen (West Covina, Calif.) blocked all five of Augsburg's shots on goal — including a pair of highlight-reel diving stops in the second half — en route to her fourth shutout of the season.

The Cardinals (2-2-2 MIAC, 5-4-2 overall) will next take the field against St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn. for a conference matchup on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
