SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its nonconference game against UW-Stevens Point sitting at 1-2-1 overall, and 1-1-0 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s earned a split in its conference-opening series against Hamline last weekend, falling to the Pipers 3-2 in the opener last Friday at TRIA Rink in St. Paul, Minn., before rallying for a 2-1 win in the rematch the following evening at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against UW-Stevens Point is the second of four straight home games for the Cardinals, who play six of their first seven contests this season on their home ice — the lone exception, last Friday’s 3-2 loss at Hamline.
• BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: It was a tale of late-game heroics in last weekend’s conference-opening series against Hamline. HU scored two goals in the game’s final 3:33 en route to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals, with SMU turning the tables in the rematch, scoring twice in a 33-second span in the final two minutes of regulation en route to a 2-1 victory.
• CLOSE CALLS: With their 3-2 loss and 2-1 win over Hamline, three of SMU’s four games this season have been decided by one goal or less — the third a season-opening 5-5 tie against Lake Forest on Oct. 28.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.), Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.), and Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa) all share the team lead with two goals each. Jack Campion (), Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), Andrew Froese (Traverse City, Mich.), Colin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.), and Kasyn Kruse (Luverne, Minn.) own SMU’s other six goals.
• DOUBLING UP: It took the Cardinals 22 games before they had a player record a two-goal game last season. It took less than two periods this season, as Winter netted two of SMU’s first three goals in SMU’s 5-5 tie vs. Lake Forest on Oct. 28.
• COLLEGIATE FIRSTS: Saint Mary’s has two players who have scored their first collegiate goals this season. Tushie netted his goal as a Cardinal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29, while Campion delivered his first career goal vs. Hamline on Nov. 5.
• LENDING A HAND: Tushie and Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) head into Friday’s matchup against UW-Stevens Point with a team-leading three assists, one more than Poellinger and Kruse, while Froese, Winter, Nauss, Young, Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.), and Gabe Potyk (Lake Orion, Mich.) all have one helper.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Poellinger and Tushie sit atop the team’s points lead with four, followed by Tharaldson, Winter, and Kruse with three, and Froese, Nauss, Schroder, and Young with two each.
• WEEKLY HONORS: After scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, Poellinger was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Oct. 31.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) and Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) have shared the goaltending duties through four games. Sankner has stopped 61 of the 67 shots he’s faced in two starts en route to a 2.91 GAA and .910 save percentage, while Close boasts a 4.53 GAA, .855 save % and 53 saves in his two starts. … With his 34-save effort against Lake Forest on Oct. 28, Sankner has now stopped 30 or more shots six times in his career — including a career-best 35 saves twice. … Close recorded a career-high 36 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 29.
• PITCHING A SHUTOUT: Sankner kicked out all 31 shots he faced in the Cardinals’ 4-0 win over Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 en route to his first collegiate shutout. The 4-0 win was also Saint Mary’s first shutout victory of the season.
• BIG OFFENSIVE NIGHT: The Cardinals’ five goals against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 were the most since SMU netted six against Bethel on March 6, 2021.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 5-5 tie against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 was their fourth OT contest over the past two seasons.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s opponents have scored first in three of the Cardinals’ first four games. SMU is 0-1-0 when scoring first, while going 1-2-1 when its opponent scores first. … The Cardinals were 6-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal a year ago, while going 2-13-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
UW-STEVENS POINT POINTERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Pointers head into Friday’s nonconference matchup against Saint Mary’s sitting at 1-1-2 overall. UWSP has yet to play a conference game this season.
• LAST TIME OUT: UW-Stevens Point went 1-0-1 last weekend, battling Gustavus to a 2-2 stalemate last Friday, before collecting its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over St. Scholastica the following evening.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Last Saturday’s game against St. Scholastica was the Pointers’ third straight home game.… The Pointers — who are 1-0-2 on their home ice this season — were virtually unbeatable on their home ice a year ago, compiling a 12-2-1 record at K.B. Willett Arena en route to their 21-6-1 overall finish.
• AGAINST THE MIAC: Friday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the third of four straight games against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UWSP faced Gustavus (T, 2-2) and St. Scholastica (W, 2-1) last weekend, and takes on St. Olaf on Saturday. The Pointers also have MIAC foes Hamline, Augsburg, Concordia, and Saint John’s on their schedule.
• NAILBITERS: The Pointers first three games of the season were all decided in overtime, and all four games this year have been decided by one goal or less. UWSP dropped a 4-3 decision to sixth-ranked St. Norbert on Oct. 28, before tying the Green Knights 1-1 in the following evening, and battling Gustavus to a 2-2 stalemate last Friday. The lone non-OT game was last Saturday’s 2-1 win over St. Scholastica.
• TWO’S ARE WILD: UW-Stevens Point has not scored more than two goals in any game this season. The Pointers have netted a season-high two goals in three of its first four games, while scoring just one goal in the other contest.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: UW-Stevens Point’s seven goals this season have come from six different players. Wilson Northey leads the team with two goals, while Conor Witherspoon, Mick Henneghan, David Hill, Isaac Moberg, and Andrew Poulias own UWSP’s other five goals.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Ten different Pointers have been in a giving mood this season, with Jordan Fader leading the way with two assists. Northey, Witherspoon, Fletcher Anderson, Sam Ayd, Matthew Falls, Noah Finstrom, Tyler German, Cody Moline, and Harrison Stewart all chipping in one helper.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Northey sits atop the team’s points race with three, one more than Fader and Witherspoon, with 11 other Pointers owning one point.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: UW-Stevens Point has used three different goalies through the first four games this season. Ryan Wagner has made two starts, compiling a 2.89 goals-against-average and .865 save percentage in 103:39 minutes, while Matthias Smith boasts a 0.71 GAA and .966 save % in 84:18 minutes and Alex Proctor owns a 0.92 GAA and .960 save % in 64:56 minutes. … Wagner has made a team-high 32 saves, followed by Smith with 28 saves and Proctor with 24.
• BY THE NUMBERS: UW-Stevens Point has not scored first in any of the team’s first four games, going 1-1-2 when its opponent scores first. … UW-Stevens Point holds a commanding 156-91 edge in shots on goal through four games. UW-SP is 1-0-2 when outshooting its opponents. The Pointers were outshot 27-25 in their lone loss, a 3-2 OT decision to St. Norbert on Oct. 28.
• A YEAR AGO: The Pointers reached the finals of the WIAC Tournament a year ago en route to their 21-6-1 overall record. UWSP beat UW-Superior (4-3, 3-2) in the semifinals, before falling to UW-Eau Claire 6-2 in the title game.
