SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference rematch against Hamline still searching for their first win of 2022-23, falling twice to Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, dropping back-to-back games to No. 7 UW-River Falls (5-2) and No. 5 UW-Eau Claire (3-0) last weekend and falling to the Pipers 3-0 on Friday.
• LAST TIME OUT: Hamline scored a pair of second-period goals and added an empty-netter late in the third to deal Saint Mary’s a 3-0 setback in the teams’ conference-opener Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against Hamline was just the second of SMU’s first five games played on their home ice for the Cardinals, who finished 6-5-2 at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena a year ago.
• TOUGH STRETCH: The Cardinals’ matchup against Hamline this weekend marks the fifth and sixth straight games against teams appearing the USCHO.com Poll. SMU’s season-opening opponent, Lake Forest, and this weekend’s opponent, Hamline, have both received votes in the latest USCHO.com Top 15, while SMU has also faced No. 5 UW-Eau Claire and No. 7 UW-River Falls.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) and Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.) share the team lead with two goals each. Kingston picked up a goal in both of SMU’s games against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, while Dornself scored in against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 and vs. UW-River Falls on Nov. 4. Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) and Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.) own Saint Mary’s other two goals this season
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Dornself’s first-period goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was her first as a Cardinal. Saint Mary’s had 10 players net their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• LENDING A HAND: Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, S.D.) assisted on two of SMU’s four goals against Lake Forest on Oct.28-29 to take the team lead in assists. SMU’s other eight helpers have come from eight different players — Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.), Abigail Painovich (Hinckley, Minn.), Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.), Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.), Kennedy Kraus (Mantorville, Minn.), Morgan Leib (Farmington Hills, Mich.), and Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.).
• POINT PRODUCERS: Kingston, Dornself, and Polzin share the team lead with two points each.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) have shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals this season. Keeley has stopped 96 of the 106 shots she’s faced in three starts and owns a 3.39 goals-against-average and .906 save percentage, while Rimstad has recorded 44 saves in her first two games and sports a 2.93 GAA and .880 save %. … Keeley — who kicked out a career-high 44 Concordia shots in SMU’s 3-1 win over the Cobbers on Nov. 13, 2021 — made a season-high 37 saves against UW-River Falls on Nov. 5. … Rimstad’s 18-save effort against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 marked the first collegiate start for the freshman, while her 26-save showing vs. UW-Eau Claire last Saturday was a career-high.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Keeley’s 19 save effort in SMU’s 0-0 tie against Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 was her third collegiate shutout, having posted a pair of shutouts during her freshman season.
• WORKING OVERTIME: SMU’s 3-2 loss to Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was the Cardinals’ first overtime game of the season. Saint Mary’s played four overtime games a year ago, finishing 1-1-2 in those four contests.
• FIRST-GOAL ADVANTAGE: The team that has scored first has won 23 of the Cardinals’ last 27 games. Two of those exceptions came on Oct. 28-29, when Saint Mary’s scored first in back-to-back losses Lake Forest
• BY THE NUMBERS: SMU has scored three of its six goals in the first period, while adding two goals in the second period and one in the third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored five times in the first period, seven times in the second, f times in the third, and once in OT. … Two of the Cardinals’ four goals against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29 came on the powerplay.
HAMLINE PIPERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Hamline enters its rematch against Saint Mary’s sitting a 2-2-0 overall, having split its two nonconference games against St. Norbert on Oct. 28-29 — losing 4-2 and winning 3-2 — before dropping a 5-3 decision to UW-Superior on Nov. 4 and beating SMU 3-0 on Friday.
• LAST TIME OUT: Hamline got goals from Mackenzie Kaasa, Haley Eder-Zdechlik, and Molly Meyers and a 25-save effort from Olivia Rinzel in beating Saint Mary’s 3-0 in the teams’ conference-opener on Friday.
• ROAD WARRIORS: The Pipers’ game at Saint Mary’s on Friday was their fourth straight road contest. HU will open the home portion of its season with back-to-back games at TRIA Rink on Saturday against Saint Mary’s and vs. St. Olaf next Friday. Hamline finished 9-4-0 in its 13 home contests a year ago.
• NAILBITERS: Three of Hamline’s first four games this season have been decided by two goals or less. HU sandwiched two-goal losses to St. Norbert (4-2) and UW-Superior (5-3) around a one-goal, 3-2, win over St. Norbert, before recording its three-goal win over Saint Mary’s on Friday.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Nikki Olund has scored four of the Pipers’ 11 goals through four games — including back-to-back two goal games against St. Norbert on Oct. 29 and vs. UW-Superior on Nov. 4. Molly Meyers has scored twice, while Kaasa, Eder-Zdechlik, Hannah Dorsey, Sydney Lemke, and Emme Nelson have netted HU’s other five goals this season.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Ally Steffensmeier leads the team with three assists, one more than Meyers and Ashley Grabau, while Olund, Kaasa, Grabau, and Elizabeth Valley have each chipped in one helper.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Olund leads the Pipers with five points, one in front of Meyers and two up on Grabau.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Hamline has already used three goalies through three games this season, with Rinzel, Airika Penney, and Kendra Nordick all making one start. Penney leads the way with a 1.64 goals-against-average and .931 save percentage, followed by Rinzel (2.00 GAA, .900 save %) and Nordick (5.26 GAA, .750 save %). … Penney has made 27 saves in 73:06 minutes of work, with Rinzel stopping 56 of 58 shots in 118:37 minutes and Nordick adding 12 saves in 45:40 minutes.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Hamline has scored three of its six goals this season in the third period. HU has scored once in the opening period and twice in the second. The Pipers’ opponents, meanwhile, own single goals in the first and second periods, and have netted three, third-period goals. … Hamline has netted a pair of power-play goals on 12 tries, while allowing three power-play goals, one shorthanded tally, and one empty-netter. … Hamline has scored first in two of its first four games. HU is 1-1-0 when scoring first, and 1-1-0 when its opponent scores first.
