SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference series against Augsburg still searching for their first win of 2022-23, falling twice to Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, dropping back-to-back games to No. 7 UW-River Falls (5-2) and No. 5 UW-Eau Claire (3-0) on Nov. 4-5, and falling to Hamline 3-0 and 4-1 last weekend.
• LAST TIME OUT: Hamline held the Cardinals to just one goal over six periods of play in dealing SMU back-to-back conference losses last weekend. HU won the opener 3-0 last Friday, before adding a 4-1 victory the following afternoon.
• ROAD WARRIROS: Friday’s game at Augsburg is the second straight road contest for the Cardinals, who have played four of their first games away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• TOUGH STRETCH: The Cardinals’ matchup against No. 13 Augsburg this weekend marks the seventh and eighth straight games against teams appearing the USCHO.com Poll. Lake Forest, Hamline, and Augsburg — which was ranked No. 13 in last week’s poll — have all received votes in the latest USCHO.com Top 15, while SMU has also faced No. 5 UW-Eau Claire and No. 7 UW-River Falls.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) and Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.) share the team lead with two goals each. Kingston picked up a goal in both of SMU’s games against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, while Dornself scored in against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 and vs. UW-River Falls on Nov. 4. Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.), Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) and Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.) own Saint Mary’s other three goals this season
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s has had two players score their first collegiate goals this season. Dornself’s first-period goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was her first as a Cardinal, while Parker netted career goal No. 1 against Hamline last Saturday. … Saint Mary’s had 10 players net their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• LENDING A HAND: Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, S.D.) assisted on two of SMU’s four goals against Lake Forest on Oct.28-29 to take the team lead in assists. SMU’s other eight helpers have come from nine different players — Parker, Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.), Abigail Painovich (Hinckley, Minn.), Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.), Kennedy Kraus (Mantorville, Minn.), Morgan Leib (Farmington Hills, Mich.), Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.), and Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.).
• POINT PRODUCERS: Kingston, Dornself, Parker, and Polzin share the team lead with two points each.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) have shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals this season. Keeley has stopped 96 of the 106 shots she’s faced in three starts and owns a 3.39 goals-against-average and .906 save percentage, while Rimstad has recorded 84 saves in her first three starts and sports a 3.28 GAA and .894 save %. … Keeley — who kicked out a career-high 44 Concordia shots in SMU’s 3-1 win over the Cobbers on Nov. 13, 2021 — made a season-high 37 saves against UW-River Falls on Nov. 5. … Rimstad’s 18-save effort against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 marked the first collegiate start for the freshman, while her 40-save showing vs. Hamline last Saturday was a career-high.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Keeley’s 19 save effort in SMU’s 0-0 tie against Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 was her third collegiate shutout, having posted a pair of shutouts during her freshman season.
• WORKING OVERTIME: SMU’s 3-2 loss to Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was the Cardinals’ first overtime game of the season. Saint Mary’s played four overtime games a year ago, finishing 1-1-2 in those four contests.
• FIRST-GOAL ADVANTAGE: The team that has scored first has won 24 of the Cardinals’ last 28 games. Two of those exceptions came on Oct. 28-29, when Saint Mary’s scored first in back-to-back losses Lake Forest
• BY THE NUMBERS: SMU has scored three goals in both the first and second periods, while netting one in the third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored six times in the first period, eight times in the second, seven times in the third, and once in OT. … Saint Mary’s is 2-for-27 on the powerplay, while killing off 20 of its opponents 23 PP opportunities.
AUGSBURG AUGGIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Auggies head into their weekend conference series against Saint Mary’s boasting a 2-3-1 overall record, including a 1-0-1 mark in their first two conference contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: Augsburg collected four of a possible six points in their two-game conference series against St. Catherine last weekend. The two teams battled to a 2-2 draw in the first game last Friday in St. Paul, Minn., while routing the Wildcats 6-0 in the rematch in Minneapolis, Minn., the following afternoon.
• TOUGH STRETCH: Augsburg’s first four games this season were against teams ranked in the top 10 in the USCHO.com Top 15. The Auggies opened the season with a 1-0 loss to No. 2 Gustavus and a 4-3 win over No. 5 UW-River Falls, before falling to No. 10 Adrian twice, 4-0 and 1-0.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the second of back-to-back home games for the Auggies, who opened the season with five consecutive road games. Augsburg will play nine of its first 11 games on the road — including upcoming contests at Saint Mary’s on Saturday and at St. Olaf next Friday.
• NAILBITERS: Four of Augsburg’s first six games have been decided by one goal or less. The Auggies own a one-goal win over UW-River Falls (4-3), while dropping 1-0 decisions to both Gustavus and Adrian, and tying St. Catherine 2-2.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kate Flynn heads into this weekend’s games against Saint Mary’s leading the team with three goals, one more than Kennedy Stein, Emily Cronkhite, and Claire Jenkins-Coffman. Sydney Rydel, Nora Stepan, and Emily Schoeberl own Augsburg’s other three goals.
• NETTING THE WINNER: Stein and Cronkhite have scored Augsburg’s two game-winning goals, while Jenkins tallied the game-tying goal against St. Catherine last Friday.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Stein has been an assist machine for the Auggies, collecting helpers on five of the team’s 12 goals. Cronkhite, Rydel, Payton Allen, and Jenna Gerold are all second to Stein with two assists each.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Fueled by her team-leading five assists, Stein sits atop the team’s points race with seven, followed by Cronkhite and Flynn with four each, and Rydel with three.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Chloe Stockinger has started all six games in goal for the Auggies, compiling a 1.83 goals-against-average and a .930 save percentage. Stockinger has stopped 147 of the 158 shots she’s faced this season — including a season-high 35-save effort against Adrian on Nov. 5.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Augsburg has scored 12 goals on 151 shots, while surrendering 11 goals on 158 shots through six games. … The Auggies are 2-for-25 on the power-play, while killing off 23 of their opponents 26 power-play opportunities. … Augsburg has outscored its opponents 4-1 in the third period. The Auggies have been outscored 4-3 in the first period and 6-5 in the second.
