SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into second game against Augsburg boasting a 1-6-0 overall record, including a 1-2-0 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s had four players score their first goal of the season — including collegiate firsts from Teagan Phillips (Oregon, Wis.) and Taverie Sherner (Maple Grove, Minn.) — as the Cardinals picked up their first win of the season, a 4-2 victory over Augsburg Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Arena.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Friday’s game at Augsburg was the second straight road contest for the Cardinals, who have played five of their first seven games away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• TOUGH STRETCH: The Cardinals’ matchup against Augsburg this weekend marks the seventh and eighth straight games against teams appearing the USCHO.com Poll. Lake Forest, Hamline, and Augsburg — which was ranked No. 13 in last week’s poll — have all received votes in the latest USCHO.com Top 15, while SMU has also faced No. 5 UW-Eau Claire and No. 7 UW-River Falls.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) and Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.) share the team lead with two goals each. Kingston picked up a goal in both of SMU’s games against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, while Dornself scored in against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 and vs. UW-River Falls on Nov. 4. Phillips, Sherner, Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.), Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.), Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) and Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.) own Saint Mary’s other seven goals this season
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s has had four players score their first collegiate goals this season. Phillips and Sherner netted goal No. 1 as a Cardinal against Augsburg on Friday, while Dornself’s first-period goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was her first as a Cardinal, and Parker netted career goal No. 1 against Hamline on Nov. 12. … Saint Mary’s had 10 players net their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• LENDING A HAND: Polzin, Parker, Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.), and Kennedy Kraus (Mantorville, Minn.) all share the team lead in assists with two each, while Dornself, Pierpont, Urlaub, Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Abigail Painovich (Hinckley, Minn.), Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.), Morgan Leib (Farmington Hills, Mich.), and Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) all own one helper.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Dornself, Parker, and Polzin all sit atop the team’s points lead with three each, one more than Kingston, Pierpont, Urlaub, Ausman, Hegdahl, and Kraus.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) have shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals this season. Keeley has stopped 135 of the 147 shots she’s faced in four starts and owns a 3.04 goals-against-average and .918 save percentage, while Rimstad has recorded 84 saves in her first three starts and sports a 3.28 GAA and .894 save %. … Keeley — who kicked out a career-high 44 Concordia shots in SMU’s 3-1 win over the Cobbers on Nov. 13, 2021 — made a season-high 39 saves against Augsburg on Friday and has now stopped 30 or more shots in three of her four starts this season. … Rimstad’s 18-save effort against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 marked the first collegiate start for the freshman, while her 40-save showing vs. Hamline last Saturday was a career-high.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Keeley’s 19 save effort in SMU’s 0-0 tie against Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 was her third collegiate shutout, having posted a pair of shutouts during her freshman season.
• WORKING OVERTIME: SMU’s 3-2 loss to Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was the Cardinals’ first overtime game of the season. Saint Mary’s played four overtime games a year ago, finishing 1-1-2 in those four contests.
• FIRST-GOAL ADVANTAGE: The team that has scored first has won 25 of the Cardinals’ last 29 games. Two of those exceptions came on Oct. 28-29, when Saint Mary’s scored first in back-to-back losses Lake Forest
• BY THE NUMBERS: SMU has scored four goals in both the first and second periods, while netting three in the third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored six times in the first period, nine times in the second, eight times in the third, and once in OT. … Saint Mary’s is 2-for-30 on the powerplay, while killing off 23 of its opponents 27 PP opportunities.
AUGSBURG AUGGIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Auggies head into Saturday’s rematch against Saint Mary’s boasting a 2-4-1 overall record, including a 1-1-1 mark in their first two conference contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: Augsburg rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game early in the third period, only to give up a pair of unanswered goals in the final stanza in falling to Saint Mary’s 4-2 at Ed Saugestad Arena in Minneapolis, Minn., Friday evening.
• TOUGH STRETCH: Augsburg’s first four games this season were against teams ranked in the top 10 in the USCHO.com Top 15. The Auggies opened the season with a 1-0 loss to No. 2 Gustavus and a 4-3 win over No. 5 UW-River Falls, before falling to No. 10 Adrian twice, 4-0 and 1-0.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against Saint Mary’s was the second of back-to-back home games for the Auggies, who opened the season with five consecutive road games. Augsburg will play nine of its first 11 games on the road — including upcoming contests at Saint Mary’s on Saturday and at St. Olaf next Friday.
• NAILBITERS: Four of Augsburg’s first seven games have been decided by one goal or less. The Auggies own a one-goal win over UW-River Falls (4-3), while dropping 1-0 decisions to both Gustavus and Adrian, and tying St. Catherine 2-2.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Emily Cronkhite and Kate Flynn heads into Saturday’s game against Saint Mary’s leading the team with three goals, one more than Kennedy Stein, Nora Stepan, and Claire Jenkins-Coffman. Sydney Rydel and Emily Schoeberl own Augsburg’s other two goals.
• NETTING THE WINNER: Stein and Cronkhite have scored Augsburg’s two game-winning goals, while Jenkins tallied the game-tying goal against St. Catherine last Friday.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Stein has been an assist machine for the Auggies, collecting helpers on five of the team’s 14 goals. Cronkhite, who assisted on both Augsburg goals on Friday, is second on the team with four assists, while Payton Allen and Jenna Gerold each have two assists.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Cronkhite and Stein share the team lead with seven points apiece, followed by Flynn with four, Stepan with three, and Coffman, Rydel, Allen, and Gerold with two each.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Chloe Stockinger has started all seven games in goal for the Auggies, compiling a 2.14 goals-against-average and a .917 save percentage. Stockinger has stopped 166 of the 181 shots she’s faced this season — including a season-high 35-save effort against Adrian on Nov. 5.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Augsburg has scored 14 goals on 192 shots, while surrendering 15 goals on 181 shots through seven games. … The Auggies are 2-for-28 on the power-play, while killing off 27 of their opponents 30 power-play opportunities. … Augsburg has outscored its opponents 5-3 in the third period. The Auggies have been outscored 5-3 in the first period and 7-6 in the second.
