SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its nonconference game against Lawrence on Tuesday sitting at 1-6-1 overall, and 1-3-0 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals came up empty in their two conference games against fifth-ranked Augsburg last weekend. Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) stopped a career-high 45 shots, but it was not enough, as No.5 Augsburg handed the Cardinals a 4-0 setback in Game 1 last Friday at the SMU Ice Arena. The Auggies completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory the following evening at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Tuesday’s game against Lawrence is the fifth home game in the last six contests for the Cardinals, who play nine of their first 12 contests this season on their home.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa) netted his team-leading third goal of the season against Augsburg last Saturday. Schroder’s three goals are one more than Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.), Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.), Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.), and Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.). Brendan Westbrook (Pine City, Minn.), Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), Andrew Froese (Traverse City, Mich.), Colin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.), and Kasyn Kruse (Luverne, Minn.) own SMU’s other seven goals.
• DOUBLING UP: It took the Cardinals 22 games before they had a player record a two-goal game last season. It took less than two periods this season, as Winter netted two of SMU’s first three goals in SMU’s 5-5 tie vs. Lake Forest on Oct. 28.
• COLLEGIATE FIRSTS: Saint Mary’s has three players who have scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform this season. Westbrook scored his first SMU goal vs. UW-Stevens Point Friday, while Tushie netted his goal as a Cardinal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 and Campion delivered his first career goal vs. Hamline on Nov. 5.
• LENDING A HAND: Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) enters Tuesday’s nonconference game against Lawrence with a team-leading five assists, two more than Poellinger and Tushie, and three up on Kruse. Froese, Campion, Winter, Nauss, Young, Westbrook, Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.), Ryan Kerchoff (White Lake, Mich.), Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia), and Gabe Potyk (Lake Orion, Mich.) all have one helper.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Poellinger and Tharaldson lead the Cardinals with five points, followed by Tushie with four, and Schroder, Winter, Campion, Young, and Kruse with three.
• WEEKLY HONORS: After scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, Poellinger was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Oct. 31.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Saint Mary’s has used three different goalies through seven games. Sankner has stopped 172 of the 193 shots he’s faced in five appearances en route to a 4.39 GAA and an .891 save percentage, while Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) boasts a 5.34 GAA, .831 save % and has made 69 saves in his three starts. A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) has appeared in two games and owns a boasts a 7.29 GAA and .812 save %. … With his career-high 45-save effort against Augsburg Friday, Sankner has now stopped 30 or more shots eight times in his career — including three times this season. … Close recorded a career-high 36 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 29.
• PITCHING A SHUTOUT: Sankner kicked out all 31 shots he faced in the Cardinals’ 4-0 win over Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 en route to his first collegiate shutout. The 4-0 win was also Saint Mary’s first shutout victory of the season.
• BIG OFFENSIVE NIGHT: The Cardinals’ five goals against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 were the most since SMU netted six against Bethel on March 6, 2021.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 5-5 tie against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 was their fourth OT contest over the past two seasons.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s opponents have scored first in seven of the Cardinals’ first eight games. SMU is 0-1-0 when scoring first, while going 1-5-1 when its opponent scores first. … The Cardinals were 6-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal a year ago, while going 2-13-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: It was a tale of late-game heroics in SMU’s conference-opening series against Hamline on Nov. 4-5. HU scored two goals in the game’s final 3:33 en route to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in the first game on Nov. 4, with SMU turning the tables in the rematch, scoring twice in a 33-second span in the final two minutes of regulation en route to a 2-1 victory the following evening.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s has scored seven of its 17 goals in the third period. SMU also owns five first-period goals and four second-period tallies. On the flip side, SMU’s opponents have scored 12 goals in the first and third periods, and 14 in the second period. … Saint Mary’s is 4 of 32 on the power play (12.5 %), while the Cardinals opponents have netted nine power-play goals on 43 attempts (20.9 %).
ÂÂLAWRENCE VIKINGS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Vikings head into Tuesday’s nonconference road game at Saint Mary’s sitting at 1-5-0 overall.
• LAST TIME OUT: Lawrence snapped a season-opening five-game losing streak last Saturday, getting a goal from Jayden Jensen two minutes into overtime, lifting the Vikings to a 4-3 NCHA Victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering. MSOE had opened the two-game conference series with a 4-1 win over LU last Friday.
• PLENTY OF FIRSTS: There were plenty of firsts for the Vikings in their 4-3 overtime win over MSOE last Saturday: First win of the season … First coaching win for HC Brett Wall … First collegiate goal by Jensen — the OT game-winner, no less. … First collegiate win in goal for Owen Carlson.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Tuesday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the first of five straight road games for the Vikings, who will play nine of their first 11 contests on the road. LU is 1-1-0 on its home ice, while going 0-4-0 away from the Appleton Ice Center.
• NAILBITERS & BLOWOUTS: Three of Lawrence’s six games have been decided by one goal — losses to Buffalo State (2-1) and St. Norbert (3-2), and last Saturday’s 4-3 win over MSOE. On the flip side, LU’s other three losses have been by three goals or more — a three-goal loss to MSOE (4-1), and four-goal setbacks at the hands of Buffalo State (4-0) and St. Norbert (7-3).
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Zach Lodes has scored a team-leading three goals through six games, while Jayden Jensen, Cory Checco, Jack Michels, Ivan Galaguzov, Zack Olen, Kyle Gierman, Tyler Jensen, and Akhmed Malsagov have all found the back of the net once. … Lodes heads into Tuesday’s game at Saint Mary’s having scored in each of the Vikings’ last three games.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Checco and Gierman share the team lead in assists with three each, one more than both Jayden Jensen and Michels.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Checco and Gierman sit atop the team’s points lead with four, followed by Jayden Jensen, Michels, and Lodes with three, and Galaguzov and Olen with two. … Checco picked up a two-assist night against St. Norbert on Nov. 11, while Gierman had a pair of helpers against MSOE last Saturday.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Carlson and Brian Tallieu have shared the goaltending duties through six games. Carlson has compiled a 2.94 goals-against-average and .909 save percentage in three appearances (122:26), while Tallieu boasts a 3.83 GAA and .881 save % in five contests (234:51). … Tallieu leads the team with 111 saves, followed by Carlson with 60.
• BY THE NUMBERS: LU has scored three goals in the first period, four in the second, and one each in the third and OT. On the flip side, Vikings’ opponents own eight first-period goals, three second-period tallies, and nine goals in the third period. … Lawrence’s four goals in last Saturday’s 4-0 win over MSOE were a season high. LU had netted just seven goals in its five games prior to their four-goal outburst. … Lawrence has scored four power-play goals on 28 chances (14.3 %), while its opponents have gone 9 of 27 (33.3 %) with the man advantage. … The Vikings have yet to score the game’s first six games, going 1-5-0 when their opponent scores first.
