SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into their fourth straight nonconference game on Saturday against #5 UW-Eau Claire still searching for their first win of 2022-23, falling twice to Lake Forest last weekend and to UW-River Falls on Friday.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s gave seventh-ranked UW-River Falls all it could handle, but the Falcons pulled away late, scoring three unanswered goals in dealing the Cardinals a 5-2 setback Friday evening at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• CLOSE CALLS CONTINUE: With their 4-2 and 3-2 losses to Lake Forest last weekend, 18 of SMU’s last 27 games have been decided by two goals or less — including 11 of their last 13 wins.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against UW-River Falls was the home opener for the Cardinals, who finished 6-5-2 on their home ice a year ago.
• WORKING OVERTIME: Last Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Lake Forest was the Cardinals’ first overtime game of the season. Saint Mary’s played four overtime games a year ago, finishing 1-1-2 in those four contests.
• TOUGH STRETCH: The Cardinals’ matchup against No. 5 UW-Eau Claire on Saturday is the second straight game against a team ranked in the latest USCHO.com Top 10. UW-River Falls arrived at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena Friday evening sporting a No. 7 ranking.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) and Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.) share the team lead with two goals each. Kingston picked up a goal in both of SMU’s games against Lake Forest last weekend, while Dornself has scored in each of SMU’s last two games. Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.) and Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.) own Saint Mary’s other two goals this season
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Dornself’s first-period goal last Saturday against Lake Forest was her first as a Cardinal. Saint Mary’s had 10 players net their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• LENDING A HAND: Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, S.D.) assisted on two of SMU’s four goals against Lake Forest last weekend to take the team lead in assists. SMU’s other eight helpers have come from eight different players — Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Wis.), Ellie Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.), Abigail Painovich (Hinckley, Minn.), Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.), Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.), Kennedy Kraus (Mantorville, Minn.), Morgan Leib (Farmington Hills, Mich.), and Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.).
• POINT PRODUCERS: Kingston, Dornself, and Polzin share the team lead with two points.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) have shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals this season. Keeley who made 37 saves against UW-River Falls on Friday and has stopped 68 shots in two starts — owns a 4.03 goals-against-average and .895 save percentage, while Rimstad stopped 18 of the 21 shots she faced last Saturday against Lake Forest. … Keeley kicked out a career-high 44 Concordia shots in SMU’s 3-1 win over the Cobbers on Nov. 13, 2021. … Last Saturday’s 18-save effort marked the first collegiate start for Rimstad.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Keeley’s 19 save effort in SMU’s 0-0 tie against Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 was her third collegiate shutout, having posted a pair of shutouts during her freshman season.
• FIRST-GOAL DISADVANTAGE: Despite scoring the game’s first goal in both contests, Saint Mary’s dropped both games against Lake Forest last weekend. A year ago, the team that scored first won 21 of the Cardinals’ 25 games.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Two of the Cardinals’ four goals against Lake Forest last weekend came on the powerplay. … SMU has scored three of its six goals in the first period, while adding two goals in the second period and one in the third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored three times in the first period, five times in the second, three times in the third, and once in OT.
UW-EAU CLAIRE BLUGOLDS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Blugolds head into Saturday’s nonconference matchup against Saint Mary’s sitting at 2-1-0 through three games this season.
• LAST TIME OUT: After opening the season with back-to-back wins over Saint Benedict, UW-Eau Claire suffered its first loss of the season last Tuesday, as Concordia (Wis.) scored a pair of third-period goals, erasing a 3-2 deficit and lifting the Falcons to a 4-3 win over the Blugolds at Hobbs Ice Arena in Eau Claire, Wis.
• YEAR TO REMEMBER: The Blugolds put together a year to remember in 2021-22, closing out the year with a 23-6-0 overall record — and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. UW-Eau Claire, which closed out the year ranked No. 7 in the final USCHO.com Poll, dropped a 6-3 decision to UW-River Falls in the WIAC Tournament title game, before falling to Gustavus 3-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. … The Blugolds’ 23 wins in 2021-22 were a program record.
• IN THE POLLS: The Blugolds head into Saturday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s ranked No. 5 in the latest USCHO.com Top 10.
• AGAINST THE MIAC: Saturday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s is the third game against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UWEC will play 10 games against MIAC opponents this season. Along with two wins over Saint Benedict (4-1, 4-3) and Saturday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s, UW-Eau Claire will also play two games against Concordia, Hamline and St. Scholastica, and one against Augsburg.
• HOME (NOT SO) SWEET HOME: Tuesday’s loss to Concordia (Wis.) was the home-opener for the Blugolds, which kicked off the season with two road games at Saint Benedict. Saturday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s is the second straight home game for the Blugolds, who will follow up Saturday’s contest with four consecutive road games.
• SAME SCORE, DIFFERENT OUTCOME: UW-Eau Claire’s last two games have been decided by 4-3 counts — a 4-3 win over Saint Benedict last Saturday, and a 4-3 loss to Concordia (Wis.) three days later.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Sophie Rausch has scored six of the Blugolds’ 11 goals this season, scoring two goals in each of the team’s first three games. … Hallie Sheridan is second on the team with two goals, with Sadie Long, Jordyn McAlpine, and Taylar Meier accounting for UW-EC’s other three goals.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Sami Scherling leads the team with three assists, while Rausch, Sheridan, Keira Bolt, and Emily Hart all have two helpers. …
• POINT PRODUCTION: Rausch enters Saturday’s game against Saint Mary’s leading the team with eight points (6 G, 2 A), followed by Sheridan with four points (2 G, 2 A), and Scherling with three (0 G, 3 A).
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Josie Mathison and Stephanie Martin have both seen plenty of time in goal for the Blugolds already this season. Martin has made two starts (122:32 minutes), compiling a 1.96 goals-against-average and .938 save percentage, while Mathison has appeared in all three games (58:49 minutes), boasting a 4.08 GAA and .600 save percentage. … Martin leads the team with 61 saves and was in goal for both UW-EC’s victories.
• BY THE NUMBERS: UW-Eau Claire has already scored 11 goals in three games, including back-to-back four-game efforts against Saint Benedict on Oct. 28-29. … UW-Eau Claire has outscored its opponents 5-2 in the second period. UW-EC has been outscored 4-3 in the first period, with both teams scoring two third-period goals. … UW-EC has been outshot 75-57 through three games, including 29-11 in the third period.
