SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Saturday’s conference showdown at Concordia sitting at 2-4 overall, including a 2-3 showing after five conference games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Owen Ziegler (Mount Horeb, Wis.) poured in a career-high 30 points and Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 25, as the Cardinals posted their second straight conference win with an 85-66 victory over Carleton last Saturday.
• HOME ON THE ROAD: The Cardinals’ 85-66 win over Carleton was their first home win of the season. The Cardinals — who have posted six of their last 10 wins on the road, are 1-2 on their home court, while also going 1-2 away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CLOSE CALLS: The Cardinals’ first three conference games were all decided by a combined 10 points. SMU fell to Gustavus by three, 74-71, on Nov. 19; dropped a one-point, 77-76 decision to Macalester on Nov. 22, and lost to St. Olaf by six, 75-69, on Nov. 30. SMU snapped that run with last Saturday's 19-point victory over Carleton.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Anthony has led the Cardinals in scoring in four of their first six games. … Anthony, who has scored 10 or more points in all six games this season, and 43 times in his four-year collegiate career, is averaging 21.5 ppg through six games, and is shooting 53.3 percent from the field (48-for-90). … Ziegler and Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) are also averaging in double figures, sitting at 16.3 ppg and 13.0 ppg, respectively.
• GREATER THAN 20: Saint Mary’s has had a player score 20 or more points in four of its six games this season. … Anthony’s 25-point effort against Carleton last Saturday marked the 15th time the senior has scored 20 or more points in a game, while his season-high 30-point performance against Crown on Nov. 8 was just five off his single-game career-high 35-point showing against St. Scholastica on Dec. 4, 2021.
• GREATER THAN 20 x 2: With the 30-point showing by Ziegler and 25-point effort by Anthony against Carleton last Saturday, the Cardinals have had two players score 20 or more points in the same game twice this season and four times in the last two seasons — with Anthony having a hand in all four.
• GREATER THAN 30 x 2: With Ziegler’s 30-point showing against Carleton last Saturday, Saint Mary’s has had a player score 30 points in a game twice this season. Anthony netted 30 against Crown on Nov. 8.
• CAREER NIGHTS: After scoring a then-career high 26 points against St. Olaf on Nov. 30, Ziegler improved that mark by four against Carleton last Saturday, pouring in 30 points against the Knights. … Anthony dished out a career-high 10 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19.
• HITTING DOUBLE DIGITS: Saint Mary’s has put at least three players in double figures in five of its first six games – including four double-figure scorers three times.
• DOUBLING UP: Anthony has posted double-doubles in four of SMU’s six games this season — including an 18-point, 10-rebound effort against St. Olaf on Wednesday. … Anthony collected his first points-assist double-double against Gustavus on Nov. 19, scoring 19 points and adding a career-high 10 assists. Anthony was just two rebounds short of his first collegiate triple-double vs. the Gusties. … Anthony now owns 14 double-doubles in his four-year collegiate career.
• ON THE GLASS: Anthony leads the team in rebounds with 55 (9.2 rpg), while Jabari Sawyer (Chicago, Ill.) is second with 27 (4.5 rpg) — with 24 of his 27 coming on the defensive end. … SMU has amassed 189 rebounds in five games — including 146 defensive boards.
• GOING DEEP: Saint Mary’s equaled the program’s single-game record with 14 3-pointers against Carleton last Saturday. … Ziegler netted a single-game program record eight 3-pointers for the second straight game against Carleton, going 8-for-14 from beyond the arc. The junior was 8-for-13 in first setting the school record against St. Olaf on Nov. 30. … Ziegler — who boasted a team-leading 37 3-pointers a year ago — leads the way for SMU with 28 treys, followed by Buysman with 10. … The Cardinals — who recorded 10 or more 3-pointers in a game five times a year ago and closed out the 2021-22 season with 178 3-pointers — have knocked down 50 3-pointers this season and are shooting 42.4 from beyond the arc (36-for-90).
• LENDING A HAND: The Cardinals recorded a season-high 19 assists against Gustavus on Nov. 19 — including a career-high 10 from Anthony. The 10 assists by Anthony were the most by a Cardinal since Evan Pederson put together an 11-assist showing against Macalester on Feb. 14, 2014. … Anthony leads SMU with 36 assists, followed by Sawyer with 15. … SMU’s 19-assist effort against the Gusties were the most in a game since the Cardinals dished out 20 helpers against Augsburg on Feb. 2, 2021
• BIG HALF: The Cardinals have scored 40 or more points in a half in four of their six games — including 40+ in both halves against Carleton last Saturday. … SMU has netted 40 or more points in a half 10 times over the last two seasons — with eight of those 40+ efforts coming in the second half. Last season, Saint Mary’s posted a season-high 47-point half against Bethel on Feb. 5, 2022.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals are shooting 46.9 percent from the field (173-for-369), with 50 3-pointers, and are 59-for-79 (74.7 percent) from the free throw line. … SMU went 5-for-5 from the free throw line against Carleton last Saturday — and did not attempt a first-half free throw. … Saint Mary’s 85 points against Carleton last Saturday were a season high, and the second time this season the Cardinals have eclipsed the 80-point mark, having netted 81 in beating Crown 81-69 on Nov. 8. … SMU’s 85 points against Carleton last Saturday were the most since SMU netted 87 against Hamline on Jan. 11, 2020.
CONCORDIA COBBERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cobbers head into their final conference game before the holiday break sitting at 3-5 overall, including a 2-3 showing in their first five conference contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: Clinging to a two-point, 40-38 halftime advantage, Concordia outscored Augsburg 44-38 over the game’s final 20 minutes in dealing the Auggies an 84-76 setback Wednesday at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Wednesday’s game against Augsburg was the Cobbers’ third straight road game. CC opened the season playing four of its first five contests at home. … The Cobbers are 1-3 on their home court, while sporting a 2-2 mark away from Memorial Auditorium.
• FINDING THEIR RHYTHM: After opening the season with three straight losses, the Cobbers are 3-2 in their last five games. … Wednesday’s win over Augsburg was the Cobbers’ first at Si Melby Hall since the 2015-16 season.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Four of CC’s five starters scored in double figures against Augsburg on Wednesday, led by Rowan Nelson with 26 points and Matthew Johnson with 20. … Johnson heads into Saturday’s game against Saint Mary’s leading the team in scoring with a 19.0 ppg average. Johnson is one of four Cobbers averaging in double figures in scoring, being joined by Nelson (15.0 ppg), Jackson Jangula (13.8 ppg), and Alex Huber (10.6 ppg). … Johnson scored a single-game season-high 42 points against Crown on Nov. 11.
• CLEANING THE GLASS: Nelson has hauled in a team-leading 47 rebounds (5.9 rpg), followed by Huber with 27, 3.4 rpg), Dylan Inniger (26, 3.3 rpg), Johnson (23, 3.8 rpg), and Jangula (23, 2.9 rpg).
• RAINING IN 3s: Concordia has drained 67 3-pointers through eight games, led by Johnson with 19 and Jangula with 14. … The Cobbers have gotten at least one 3-pointer from 12 different players and boast six players with six or more treys this season. … CC has attempted 191 3-pointers through eight games and is shooting 35.1 % from behind the arc.
• LENDING A HAND: Jangula owns a team-leading 33 assists. He is one of four Cobbers with at least 10 helpers this season. Nelson is second with 18, followed by Johnson with 15 and David Birkeland with 14.
• BY THE NUMBERS: The Cobbers are shooting 46.7 percent from the field (223-for-478), with 67 3-pointers, and are 109-for-137 (79.6 %) from the free throw line. … The Cobbers are averaging 79.8 ppg, while their opponents are scoring at a 76.4 ppg clip. … CC has outscored its opponents 316-293 in the first half, but have been outscored 318-306 after halftime. … Concordia has scored 80 or more points three times this season, including a season-high 92-point effort in beating Martin Luther 92-62 on Nov. 28.
