MOORHEAD, Minn.  — The Saint Mary's University men's basketball team spread the offensive wealth Saturday afternoon in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Concordia — putting five players in double figures for the first time this season.
Â
Unfortunately, five players scoring 10 or more points just wasn't enough, as the Cardinals surrendered the lead midway through the first half and could never wrestle it back in falling to Concordia 73-68 at Memorial Auditorium.
Â
The Cardinals grabbed the early lead to open the first half, jumping out to a 14-10 lead on back-to-back field goals by
Breyton Buysman (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and
Caden Freetly (Farmington, Minn.) with 13:06 to play. Concordia, however, had an answer, scoring 19 of the next 25 points to take its biggest lead of the half, 29-20.
Â
Led by the sharp-shooting of
Cameron Mallory (Joliet, Ill.) — who scored eight of SMU's next 12 points — the Cardinals clawed within two, 31-29, only to have the Cobbers close out the half on a 7-4 run to take a five-point, 38-33, advantage into the locker room at the break.
Â
Over the game's final 20 minutes, Saint Mary's would get within one on four separate occasions — 52-51, 54-53, 56-55, and 58-57 — but the Cardinals could never get over the hump, allowing Concordia to close out the game by scoring 15 of the contest's final 25 points en route to the six-point win.
Â
Freetly finished with a team-high 17 points, while
Raheem Anthony (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 14 and Mallory added a second-half field goal to his 10 first-half points for a career-best 12-point performance.
Noah Frechette (Lakeville, Minn.) and Buysman also finished in double figures for SMU, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
As a team, Saint Mary's shot 45.8 percent from the field (27 of 59) with nine 3-pointers, and were a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Â
The Cardinals (3-6 MIAC, 5-8 overall) are back in action — and back on the road — on Wednesday, heading to Saint John's Sexton Arena in Collegeville, Minn., for a 7 p.m. conference showdown with the Johnnies.
