WINONA, Minn. — The temperatures outside the Saint Mary's Ice Arena were cold — and getting colder by the minute — but inside, the Saint Mary's men's hockey team heated up the ice on Friday night.
Â
The Cardinals dominated visiting Gustavus from start-to-finish, dealing the Gusties a decisive 4-1 setback in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
Â
SMU grabbed the momentum early, as
Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.) beat Gustavus goaltender Jackson Hjelle at 8:16, with an assist from
Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.), to give SMU a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Â
At 6:36 in the second period,
Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa) increased the Cardinal lead to 2-0, scoring with assists from Campion and
Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) The Gusties wouldn't let the Cardinals get too comfortable with that two-goal advantage, however, cutting it in half off a goal from Stanislav Danaev with less than five minutes remaining in the second period.
Â
Danaev's goal didn't faze the Cardinals, however, as SMU grabbed an additional two goals in the third period to secure their win.
Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.) scored at 4:59 with assists from Campion and Schroder, and, less than four minutes later,
Jackson Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.) scored his first goal as a Cardinal, with assists from
Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.) and
Brendan Westbrook (Pine City, Minn.), to secure the 4-1 Saint Mary's win.Â
Â
Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) made 30 saves in goal for the Cardinals.
Â
The Cardinals (2-3-0 MIAC, 3-6-1 overall) will face-off against the Gusties once again at 7 p.m. on Saturday in St. Peter, Minn. to close out their two-game series.Â
