SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its conference rematch against Gustavus on Saturday sitting at 3-6-1 overall, and 2-3-0 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals got a goal and two assists from Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.), as they rolled to a 4-1 conference win over Gustavus Friday evening at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against Gustavus was the sixth home game in the last seven contests for the Cardinals, who play nine of their first 12 games this season on their home ice.
• STREAK-SNAPPER: The Cardinals’ 3-1 win over Lawrence on Nov. 22 snapped their season-high four-game losing streak, and their 4-1 win over Gustavus on Friday gave SMU back-to-back victories… SMU’s four goals against Gustavus were the most since netting a season-best five goals in a season-opening 5-5 tie with Lake Forest on Oct. 28.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: SMU’s four goals against Gustavus Friday came from four different players — Campion, Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa), Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), and Jackson Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.). … Schroder’s goal against the Gusties was his team-leading fourth of the season, one more than Campion and Young,
• DOUBLING UP: It took the Cardinals 22 games before they had a player record a two-goal game last season. It took less than two periods this season, as Winter netted two of SMU’s first three goals in SMU’s 5-5 tie vs. Lake Forest on Oct. 28.
• MULTIPLE POINTS: Campion picked up a pair of assists to go with his first-period goal against Gustavus on Friday en route to his first collegiate three-point night. … Campion’s three-point effort was the most by a Cardinal since Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.) recorded four points against Hamline on Jan. 21, 2022.
• COLLEGIATE FIRSTS: Saint Mary’s has four players who have scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform this season. Jackson Nauss tallied his first in a Cardinal jersey on Friday; Westbrook scored his first SMU goal vs. UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 11; Tushie netted his first SMU goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29; and Campion delivered his first career goal vs. Hamline on Nov. 5.
• LENDING A HAND: Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) picked up his team-leading sixth assist in SMU’s 3-1 nonconference win over Lawrence on Nov. 22. Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.) is second on the squad with five helpers, followed by Tushie and Campion with three each.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Poellinger enters Saturday’s rematch against Gustavus sitting atop the Cardinal points heap with seven, one more than Campion and Tharaldson. Schroder is fourth with four points, and Young, Tushie, and Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) all own four points.
• WEEKLY HONORS: After scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, Poellinger was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Oct. 31.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Saint Mary’s has used three different goalies this season. Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) has stopped 223 of the 246 shots he’s faced in seven appearances en route to a 3.28 GAA and a .907 save percentage, while Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) boasts a 5.34 GAA, .831 save % and has made 69 saves in his three starts. A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) has appeared in two games and owns a boasts a 7.29 GAA and .812 save %. … Sankner has stopped 30 or more shots nine times in his career — including four times this season. … Sankner delivered a career-high 45-save effort against Augsburg on Nov. 18. … Close recorded a career-high 36 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 29.
• PITCHING A SHUTOUT: Sankner kicked out all 31 shots he faced in the Cardinals’ 4-0 win over Bethel on Feb. 19, 2022 en route to his first collegiate shutout. The 4-0 win was also Saint Mary’s first shutout victory of the season.
• BIG OFFENSIVE NIGHT: The Cardinals’ five goals against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 were the most since SMU netted six against Bethel on March 6, 2021.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 5-5 tie against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 was their fourth OT contest over the past two seasons.
• CLEAN SHEET: Saint Mary’s was not whistled for a penalty in its 3-1 win over Lawrence on Nov. 22. All told, there were just two penalties called in the nonconference contest, both against the Vikings.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s opponents have scored first in seven of the Cardinals’ first 10 games. SMU is 2-1-0 when scoring first, while going 1-5-1 when its opponent scores first. … The Cardinals were 6-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal a year ago, while going 2-13-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: It was a tale of late-game heroics in SMU’s conference-opening series against Hamline on Nov. 4-5. HU scored two goals in the game’s final 3:33 en route to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in the first game on Nov. 4, with SMU turning the tables in the rematch, scoring twice in a 33-second span in the final two minutes of regulation en route to a 2-1 victory the following evening.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s has scored nine of its 19 goals in the third period. SMU also owns six first-period goals and four second-period tallies. On the flip side, SMU’s opponents have scored 12 goals in the first period, 14 in the second, and 13 in the third. … Saint Mary’s is 4 of 34 on the power play (11.8 %), while the Cardinals’ opponents have netted nine power-play goals on 43 attempts (20.9 %).
GUSTAVUS GUSTIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Gusties head into the second game of their two-game conference series against Saint Mary’s still searching for its first win, sporting an 0-6-2 overall mark, including an 0-4-1 showing in four conference contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: Gustavus could only manage a lone second-period goal in falling to Saint Mary’s 4-1 Friday evening at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena in Winona, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Friday’s game at Saint Mary’s was the Gusties’ third straight road game. GAC, which plays six of its first eight games on the road, is 0-1-1 on its home ice, while sitting at 0-5-1 away from Don Roberts Ice Arena this season.
• OFFENSIVE FUNK: Gustavus has been shut out in two of its last two games and has scored just three goals in its last five games. … GAC has netted just eight goals through eight games.
• OFFENSIVE LEADER: Mason Hendrickson has scored a team-leading two goals, while Nate Stone, Nick Moutain, Toby Sengvongxay, Jack Suchy, Joey Gimberlin, Stanislav Danaev, and Wilmer Svenson have accounted for GAC’s other six goals.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Gustavus’s 10 assists this season have come from nine different players, led by Joey Gimberlin with two. Hendrickson, Svensson, Sengvongxay, Stone, Stansilav Danaev, Kyle Heffron, Jack Kubitz, and Christian Miller all own one helper.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Hendrickson sits atop the team’s points lead with three, one more than Svensson, Sengvongxay, Stone, Danaev, and Gimberlin.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Gustavus has used three different goalies through eight games. Jackson Hjelle has compiled a 3.27 goals-against-average and .904 save percentage in 340:46 minutes of work, while Will Pinney boasts a 4.00 GAA and an .867 save percentage in 120:00 minutes. Zach Dosan has played 40:00 minutes, owning a 7.50 GAA and .750 save percentage. … Hjelle has stopped 170 of the 188 shots he’s faced. Pinney has collected 52 saves and Dosan 15.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Gustavus recorded season-highs in goals (3), assists (3), points (6), and shots on goal (34) in its 10-3 loss to St. Scholastica on Nov. 10. … GAC has allowed three or more goals five times this season, including a season-high 10 goals against vs. St. Scholastica on Nov. 10. … Gustavus has yet to score a third-period goal, netting four goals in both the first and second periods. On the flip side, GAC’s opponents own 10 first-period goals, while adding 12 in the second, eight in the third, and one in OT.
