One goal is enough as SMU tops SCU 1-0

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team's offense remained on its brief hiatus Friday evening.

But then, when you have Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) between the pipes, who needs a high-scoring offensive machine?

The Cardinals managed just one goal against St. Catherine — giving SMU three goals in their last four games combined — but Ziakas and Co. made that one goal stand up, as Saint Mary's dealt the host Wildcats a 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Drake Arena.

The Cardinals, who have now scored two goals in their last two Friday night games — a 1-1 tie against league-leading and nationally ranked Gustavus last Friday and their 1-0 win over St. Catherine — needed just over five minutes to get on the board against SCU.

Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season — off an assist from Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.) — at 5:15 of the first period to give the Cardinals the early 1-0 advantage.

Little did anyone know that that first-period tally would be the only goal of the contest.

And Ziakas made sure that solo Polzin goal would be enough to give Saint Mary's the victory, as the senior goalie stopped all 29 St. Catherine shots in recording her second shutout of the season, and fifth of her career.

Ziakas — coming off 89 saves in last weekend's two-game series against Gustavus — was busiest in the first period, stopping all 13 SCU shots, before adding seven saves in the second period and nine more in the third.

The Cardinals (7-3-1 MIAC, 10-7-1 overall) and Wildcats will conclude their two-game conference series on Saturday, heading to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for a 2 p.m. matchup.
