• 1 x 2: The Saint Mary’s men’s and women’s tennis teams both picked up their first conference wins of the season last Sunday, as the men dropped Concordia 7-2 and the women rolled to a 6-2 victory over the Cobbers.
• 2: Tyler O’Brien (Belle Plaine, Minn.) went 2-for-4 and drove in the team’s lone run in the Cardinal baseball team’s 5-1 loss to North Central last Sunday.
• 2 + 2: Saint Mary’s hockey student-athletes swept the Outstanding Male and Female Senior honors at last Tuesday’s Founders’ Day Convocation, with Trevor Paradise (Colorado Springs, Colo.) being named the Outstanding Male Senior and Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) named Outstanding Female Senior. Paradise’s teammate, Jack Hatton (Naperville, Ill.), and Keeley’s teammate, Jordan Modjeski (South Lyon, Mich.), were also among the 10 finalists for the two awards.
• 2 x 1: Jake Mercado (Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Brandon Merfeld (La Crosse, Wis.) hit their first collegiate home runs in the Cardinal baseball team’s 6-4, Game 1 loss to Wartburg last Tuesday. Mercado belted a two-run shot in the second inning and Mercado added a solo bomb in the third.
• 2-0 x 4: The Saint Mary’s tennis teams had four players go 2-0 in the teams’ conference-wins over Concordia last Sunday. Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.), Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.), and Peter Quinn (Lake Elmo, Minn.) picked up both singles and doubles wins in the men’s 7-2 victory over the Cobbers, while Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) matched that feat in the women’s 6-3 win over CC.
• 9: Saint Mary’s Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) was one of nine finalists for the 2022 Laura Hurd Award, presented annually to the best NCAA Division III women’s ice hockey player in the country. Sponsored by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA), the Hurd Award honors the memory of former Elmira College standout Laura Hurd. A 2005 graduate of Elmira, and a four-time All-American, Hurd died in an automobile accident shortly after graduation. She was the recipient of the AHCA Player of the Year Award in 2005.
