Cardinals top Cobbers for 1st MIAC win

FARGO, N.D. — It wasn't easy, but the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team got the job done Sunday morning.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches and got straight-set wins in four of the six singles matches — while dropping a pair of three-set marathons in the other two — in beating Concordia 6-3 in a Minnesota Inte4rcollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at Courts Plus.

"This was a great win against a very good Concordia team," said Saint Mary's wonen's tenis coach Jeff Halberg. "Everyone contributed to a solid team win."

The doubles teams of Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.)/Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.)/Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.) delivered 8-5 victories to give Saint Mary's a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches.

Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.)/Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) nearly gave Saint Mary's a clean sweep in doubles play, only to fall 8-7 (6) in a marathon match at No. 1.

Peterson and Morgan were both victorious in singles play, posting straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, while Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) and Henderson each chipped in straight set wins to seal the victory.

Frye and Dosser came out on the short-end of three-set decisions in the other two singles matches, with Frye falling 3-6, 7-5, 13-11 at No. 4 and Dosser losing 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 10-6 at No. 6.

The Cardinals (1-3 MIAC, 8-5 overall) are back in action next weekend with a pair of conference contests. Saint Mary's will head to the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn., for a 2 p.m. showdown against Macalester, before returning home to the Winona Tennis Center for a 1 p.m. match against Bethel the following afternoon.
