SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s closed out the 2021 season sporting a 7-20 overall record — including a 3-8 conference mark.
• POST-SEASON HONORS: Ciarra McNally closed out a memorable sophomore campaign in 2021 by earning First-Team All-MIAC honors.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: This weekend’s matches will mark the first at the helm for Cardinal coach Amber Zitzow, who spent the 2021 season as an assistant coach at UM-Morris, after serving 12 seasons at Rochester Community Technical College (RCTC), the first four as an assistant coach and the last eight as the Yellowjackets’ head coach.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After opening the season playing their first 17 contests — and 19 of the opening 21 — on the road, the Cardinals closed out the season with four consecutive home matches. Saint Mary’s closed out 2021 1-5 on its home court, while going 6-15 away from the Saint Mary’s Gym.
• CAREER PERFORMANCES: McNally recorded a program-record 32 kills in the Cardinals' 3-2 victory against Carleton on Sept. 15. McNally's 32 kills against Carleton were not only a career-high, but also a single-match, program record, breaking the previous mark of 31, set by Brandi Blattner on Oct. 21, 2016. … McNally also posted a career-high in digs (18) in the Cardinals' 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Oct. 1. … Braidyn Ruetten (Holmen, Wis.) and Pigorsch each turned in career performances against Carroll on Sept. 24., with Ruetten pounded out a career-high 17 kills, while Pigorsch added a career-best 14. … Amerongen posted a career-best 13 kills in the Cardinals' 3-1 win over Westminster (Mo.) on Sept. 17. … Faith Van Erp (Sartell, Minn.) racked up a career-high 19 kills in the Cardinals' 3-2 loss to Marian on Sept. 11.
• ON THE ATTACK: McNally closed out the season recording at least 10 kills 18 times — including five matches of 20 of more kills — and owned a team-best 331 kills. Ruetten was second to McNally with 180 kills, followed closely by Van Erp with 176.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) and Clem shared the setting duties in 2021. Schmidt owned a team-leading 541 helpers, while Clem has tallied 286. … With her 34 assists vs. Macalester on Oct. 22, Schmidt posted five matches with 30 or more assists, while recording at least 20 helpers in a match 14 times.
• DOUBLING UP: Schmidt picked up her team-leading seventh double-double of the season against Macalester on Oct. 22, dishing out 34 assists and adding 13 digs. McNally, meanwhile, posted her sixth double-double of the year against the Scots, finishing with 22 kills and 14 assists. … Clem posted career-highs in both assists (30) and digs (10) en route to her first collegiate double-double against Carleton on Sept. 15.
• DIGGING IT: Baab led the team in digs in 22 of SMU’s 27 matches — including a season-high 29-dig effort in SMU’s 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Oct. 1. Baab closed out the year leading the team with 388 digs. … Baab compiled a total of 1,536 career digs, ranking her third all-time.
• SERVING UP ACES: Clem and Schmidt finished 2021 as the team’s “ace” servers, with Clem posting 32 aces, five more than Schmidt, followed by Baab (18), McNally (17), Grace Gilles (Apple Valley, Minn. / 16), and Ruetten (13).
• STREAK SNAPPERS: With their 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Oct. 1, the Cardinals put an end to their season-high six-match losing streak. SMU’s 3-0 loss to Hamline on Oct. 8, meanwhile, put an end to SMU’s two-match winning streak.
• GOING.THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals’ 3-2 loss to Macalester on Oct.22 was their fourth five-set match of the season. SMU was also extended to a fifth set in beating Carleton and falling to Marian and Carroll. Saint Mary’s is 3-12 in three-set matches, while going 3-4 in matches decided in four sets.
MARIAN SABRES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Sabres head into their season-opening weekend having gone 15-14 overall record in 2021, including a 3-10 showing in the Midwest Conference.
• STRONG FINISHING KICK: Marian closed out the 2021 season having won its last four matches — beating Grand Christian (Mich.) (3-0), Maranatha Baptist (3-0), North Central (3-0), and Rockford (3-0).
• STREAKING: After opening the 2021 campaign with back-to-back losses to Carthage and Lake Forest, Marian rattled off wins in eight of their next nine — including a season-high seven-match winning streak. … The 3-0 win over Grace Christian on Oct. 29 — which jump-started their season-ending four-match winning streak — also snapped Marian’s season-high six-match losing streak.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Marian played 23 of its 29 matches last season on the road. The Sabres went 1-5 in six home contests, while finishing 14-9 on the road — including 10-3 in neutral-site contests.
• ON THE ATTACK: Kaitlyn Merrill closed out the 2021 season owning a team-high 322 kills (3.62 kps). Merrill ended the year as one of five Sabres with 100 or more kills in 29 matches, being joined by Serina Pehowski (242 kills), Andrea Miller (144 kills), Reagan Jasica (134 kills), and Tehya Pyawasay (119 kills).
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Anna Tapia — who was four kills shy of the century mark — accounted for 881 of the team’s 1043 assists. … Tapia recorded 10 or more assists in all 289 matches last season — including 17 matches of 20 or more helpers. … Tapia recorded a single-match, season-high 46 assists against Loras on Sept. 4.
• DIGGING IT: Marian boasted six players with 100 or more digs in 2021, led by Taylor and Jasica, who finished with 518 and 316, respectively. Miller (295), Tapia (223), Regan Brown (161), and Merrill (104) also boasting 100 or more digs.
• SERVING UP ACES: Brooklyn Taylor closed out 2021 with a team-best 46 service aces, two more than Tapia, while Jasica (30), Miller (29), Pehowski (27), and Merrill (21) also racking up more than 20 aces last season.
• AS A TEAM: The Sabres collected 1166 kills in 29 matches last season (11.00 kps) and finished with a .154 attack percentage. … Marian amassed 1043 assists, 213 aces, 1719 digs, and 245 blocks.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Nine of Marian’s 15 wins last season were 3-0 sweeps. The Sabres also recorded three, four-set wins, and added three wins that were stretched to a maximum five sets. On the flip side, Marian dropped seven 3-0 decisions, with four 3-1 losses and three 3-2 setbacks. … With their 15-14 overall record in 2021, Marian sealed its first winning season since the 2003 campaign.
GRINNELL PIONEERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Pioneers head into their season-opening weekend coming off a 20-14 season a year ago, including a near-perfect 7-1 showing in Midwest Conference play. … Grinnell reached the MWC Tournament title match, falling to Cornell 3-1.
• SEASON TO REMEMBER: Grinnell ?saw seven school records tumble during its historic 2021 campaign. All of the marks were of the individual career variety, including six by graduated senior Kaylin Kuhn — kills (1,716), kills average (4.21 per set), attack attempts (4,538), service aces (199), points (1988.0) and points average (4.87 per set). Fellow graduated senior Olivia Jensen posted the other school record with a career attack percentage of .323.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Grinnell went 10-5 in its 15 home matches in 2021, while posting a 6-5 mark on the road, and owning a 4-4 record in neutral-site matches.
• STREAKING: The Pioneers put together two, season-high four-match winning streak last season, while dropping more than two straight matches just once — dropping back-to-back-to-back 3-1 decisions to the University of Chicago, Elmhurst, and Cornell in late October.
• ON THE ATTACK: The Pioneers boasted five players who recorded more than 100 kills in 2021, led by Kuhn, who amassed 479 kills and hit a .238 in 31 matches. Jensen (253), Rachel Woock (243), Jenna Keller (243), and Malana Miles (136) also eclipsed the 100-kill mark a year ago.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Emily Brewer and Julianna Roth shared the setting duties for the Pioneers last season, with Brewer dishing out 749 assists, with Roth chipping in 506 helpers. … Brewer recorded 12 matches with 30 or more assists — including three 40+ assist performances. … Brewer delivered a season-high 46-assist showing against Central (Iowa) on Sept. 14.
• DOUBLING UP: Kuhn led the Pioneers with 17 kill-dig double-doubles, 10 more than Woock, while Roth delivered five assist-dig double-doubles and Brewer chipped in four.
• DIGGING IT: Payton Lowrey collected a team-high 509 digs last season, leading seven Pioneers with at least 100 digs. Kuhn was second to Lowrey with 319 digs, followed by Woock (314), Jenna Keller (291), Brewer (178), Sophie Weber (170), and Roth (150).
• SERVING UP ACES: Grinnell recorded 250 service aces in 2021, led by Kuhn with 56 and Lowrey with 49. Brewer (34), Nyquist (23), Woock (22), and Roth (20) also collected at least 20 aces.
• SWEEPING UP: Ten of Grinnell’s 20 wins in 2021were 3-0 sweeps, while the Pioneers also recorded five, four-set wins, and collected five, five-set victories. On the flip side, Six of Grinnell’s 14 losses were three-setters. The Pioneers also fell six times in four sets, and dropped a pair of five-set contests.
BETHANY LUTHERAN VIKINGS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Vikings kick off the 2021 season on the heels of a 6-20 showing in 26 contests a year ago, including a 4-10 mark in UMAC action.
• SWEEPING: After splitting its first two matches of the year — a 3-0 loss to Gustavus and a 3-0 win over Macalester — the Vikings dropped six consecutive 3-0 decisions, before snapping the streak with a 3-0 win over Northland on Sept. 11 — marking the ninth consecutive 3-0 decision to open the season for BLC. … All six of BLC’s wins last season were 3-0 sweeps. On the flip side, 13 of the Vikings’ 20 losses were over in three sets. Bethany Lutheran also dropped four, four-set matches, and three that went the maximum five sets.
• NO PREFERNCE: Bethany Lutheran recorded three wins on their home court, and three wins on the road en route to its 6-20 overall record. BLC finished the year 3-6 at home, and 3-14 on the road — including 1-6 in neutral-site matches.
• ON THE ATTACK: Alexis Norris closed out 2021 as the Vikings’ leader in kills with 291. She was one of five BLC players to reach 100 kills, being joined by Rilee Hohbein (188), Morgan Goettlicher (125), Sarah Strom (101), and Kaylee Glomstad (100).
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Megan Gallagher was in a very giving mood in 2021, accounting for 609 of the team’s 838 assists. Paloma G. De Fuentes was second on the team with 117 helpers.
• DIGGING IT: Bethany Lutheran collected 1523 digs a year ago, led by Maddi Wendland with 428. Esther Peeters (213), Arissa Wilson (162), Morsching (122), and Amia Broughten (110) also recorded more than 100 digs in 2021.
• SERVING UP ACES: Peeters posted a team-best 32 aces, five more than Wendland.
BUENA VISTA BEAVERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Buena Vista heads into its season-opening weekend having posted a 10-10 overall mark a year ago, including a 3-5 showing in the American Rivers Conference.
• ROAD WARRIORS: The Beavers picked up seven of their 10 wins in 2021 on the road. BVU finished the year 3-2 on their home court, while going 3-7 on the road, and 3-1 in neutral-site matches.
• FAST STARTERS: Buena Vista raced out to a 5-1 start to the year — including a season—opening three-match winning streak — with all three wins come via 3-0 decisions. BVU’s lone loss in its first six contests was a 3-2 decision to Macalester on Sept. 4. … Six of the Beavers’ 10 losses in 2021 came during a pair of three-match losing streaks.
• ON THE ATTACK: Sydney McLaren led the BVU offense last season, recording a team-high 257 kills, while hitting .266. … McLaren was one of four BVU players to finish the year with 100 or more kills, being joined by Rachel Brockney (150), Kaitie Serkiz (115), and Hannah Smith (100). … McLaren collected at least 10 kills in 15 of BVU’s 20 matches — including a season-high 23 kills against Nebraska Wesleyan on Sept. 29.
• GIVING AN ASSIST: Taylor Wedemeyer amassed 662 of the Beavers’ 774 assists last season. … Wedemeyer recorded at least 20 helpers in all 19 matches she played in, including six matches with 40 or more assists. … Wedemeyer dished out a season-high 51 assists against Concordia on Sept. 18.
• DOUBLING UP: McLaren led the team with 12 kill-dig double-doubles, while Wedemeyer chipped in 11 assist-dig double-doubles.
• DIGGING IT: Jade Hays finished the year with a team-best 287 digs, followed closely by McLaren with 250. Wedemeyer (178), Nosbisch (163), and Molly Bense (120) also eclipsed the 100-dig plateau in 2021. … Hays racked up 10 or more digs in 16 of the team’s 20 matches — including recorded a season-high 20 digs on three separate occasions.
• SERVING UP ACES: Brockney served up a team-high 19 aces last season, one more than McLaren, Wedemeyer, and Kaylee Nosbisch, who all finished tied for second with 18.
• SETTING THE TONE: BVU picked up four, three-set and four, four-set victories last season, with the Beavers’ other two wins going the maximum five sets. On the flip side, five of Buena Vista’s 10 losses were 3-0 sweeps, while BVU also dropped three four-set contests and a pair of five-setters.
