SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown against St. Catherine sitting at 2-4-0 overall, including 0-2-0 in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: Luther converted a penalty kick in the game’s 75th minute, breaking a 1-1 tie and leading the Norse to a 2-1 nonconference win over the Cardinals Wednesday in Decorah, Iowa.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saint Mary’s loss to Carleton on Sept. 14 was just its second loss at Ochrymowycz Field in the last 11 home games (7-2-2).
• THROWING UP ZEOES: Saint Mary’s 2-1 loss to Luther on Wednesday marked the first time this season the outcome was not decided by shutout. In their first five games of the season, the Cardinals beat UM-Morris 3-0 and Lawrence 2-0 to open the season, before falling to Wartburg (1-0), Carleton (2-0), and Saint Benedict (3-0) … SMU’s wins over UM-Morris and Lawrence marked the second straight season in which the Cardinals opened the season with back-to-back shutout wins.
• CAREER FIRSTS: The goals by Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.) and Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) against UM-Morris on Sept. 1 were both collegiate firsts. The Cardinals had six players net their first goal in a Saint Mary’s uniform during the 2021 season. … Skoruppa also added an assist against the Cougars on Sept. 1 en route to her first career three-point game.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Skoruppa scored her team-leading second goal of the season in Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to Luther. The Cardinals’ other four goals have come from four different players — Lahart, Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.), Haddy Falkman (Waconia, Minn.), and Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.).
• POINT PRODUCER: Along with her team-leading two goals, Skoruppa also owns one assist for a team-leading five points, one more than Falkman (1 G, 2 A) and two in front of McKinney (1 G, 1 A).
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) — the reigning MIAC Defensive Player of the Year — has started five of the team’s six games in goal, owning a 1.33 goals-against-average and .788 save percentage. … Nguyen did not have to make a save en route to her first shutout of the season against UM-Morris on Sept. 1, before adding a two-save shutout against Lawrence three days later. Nguyen, who recorded eight shutouts a year ago, has now collected 11 shutouts in her four-year collegiate career.
• BUSY NIGHT: Nguyen equaled her career high with 10 saves in last Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Saint Benedict. The junior also made 10 saves against St. Catherine on Sept. 25, 2021.
• GOALKEEPING FIRSTS: Megan Nadal (Chino, Calif.) made her first collegiate start on Wednesday against Luther, stopping seven first-half shots. … Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) made her first collegiate appearance in goal for the Cardinals last Saturday, making three saves in 22 minutes of relief in SMU’s 3-0 loss to Saint Benedict.
• AS A TEAM: The Cardinals have scored five of their six goals this season in the second half. … Saint Mary’s opponents own an 81-65 advantage in shot attempts through six games — including 44-30 in shots on goal
• A YEAR AGO: The Cardinals closed out the 2021 season with a 7-3-1 record in MIAC play and a 13-5-2 overall record — reaching the MIAC Tournament semifinals, where they dropped a 3-2 decision to second-seeded Saint Benedict. … The Cardinals’ seven conference wins are the most since 1995, when the Cardinals went 7-2-1, while SMU’s 13 overall victories are the most since the 2005 team finished 13-5-0. … Saint Mary’s 10-1-1 start to the season was its best start since opening the 1991 season 11-1-0. That 1991 team went on to finish 14-4-0 and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, falling to UC-San Diego in the opening round. … The Cardinals also opened the 1988 season 11-1-0 — it’s the best 12-game start in program history.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The NCAA implemented a new rule beginning with the 2022 that will eliminate all overtimes in regular-season games. Games that are deadlocked following the scheduled 90 minute will go in the books as ties. Once in post-season, if a game is tied following regulation, there will be two, 10-minute overtime periods — with no golden goal — followed by a shootout if the game is still tied.
