WINONA, Minn. — There's something about the second half that seems to bring out the best in the Saint Mary's University woemn'ssoccer team.
Â
For the second game in a row, the Cardinals were held off the scoreboard through the game's opening 45 minutes.
Â
And for the second game in a row, the Cardinals turned up the offensive heat in the second half en route to their second win of the season.
Â
The Cardinals — who scored all three of their goals in last Thursday's season-opening 3-0 win over UM-Morris in the second half — found the back of the net twice in the game's second 45-minute half to beat Lawrence 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
Despite holding a 7-1 edge in shots — including 4-1 in shots on goal — in the first half, the Cardinals headed into the intermission deadlocked with the Vikings, 0-0.
Â
Haddy Falkman (Waconia, Min.) put an end to the stalemate early in the second half, scoring her first of the season on a laser over the outstretched arms of Lawrence goalkeeper Sarah Yochem. Three minutes later, it was
Kaley Manglitz's (Onalaska, Wis.) turn, as she took a feed from
Brooklyn McKinney and beat Yochem to give the Cardinals all the offense they would need.
Â
Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.), who did not have to make a save in Thursday's win over UM-Morris, stopped both Lawrence shots on goal — on in each half — en route to her second straight shutout.
Â
The Cardinals (2-0-0 overall) are back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Waverly, Iowa, for a 6 p.m. nonconference game against Wartburg.
