SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Game 2 of the 2022 season sitting at 1-0-0 after a season-opening 3-0 win over UM-Morris on Thursday.
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s scored three second-half goals — including collegiate firsts from Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.) and Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.) — en route to its season-opening, 3-0 win over UM-Morris Thursday.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Thanks to Thursday’s 3-0 season-opening victory over UM-Morris, the Cardinals improved to 6-1-2 on their home field over the last two seasons — the Cardinals were a near-perfect 5-1-2 at Ochrymowycz Field a year ago.
• THROWING UP ZEOES: With their 3-0 win over UM-Morris on Thursday, the Cardinals have now opened the season with a shutout victory in back-to-back seasons. SMU beat UW-Superior 2-0 to kick off the 2021 campaign.
• CAREER FIRSTS: The goals by Lahart and Skoruppa against UM-Morris on Thursday were both collegiate firsts. The Cardinals had six players net their first goal in a Saint Mary’s uniform during the 2021 season. … Skoruppa also added an assist against the Cougars on Thursday en route to her first career three-point game.
• OFFENSIVE LEADERS: Lahart, Skoruppa, and Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.) accounted for SMU’s three goals against UM-Morris, while Haddy Falkman () picked up assists on two of the Cardinals’ three tallies. Falkman also led the team with seven shot attempts vs. UM-Morris
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) — the reigning MIAC Defensive Player of the Year — did not have to make a save en route to her first shutout of the season against UM-Morris on Thursday. Nguyen, who recorded eight shutouts a year ago, has now collected 10 shutouts in her four-year collegiate career. … Nguyen ended the 2021 campaign stopping 49 of the 55 shots she faced for a 0.45 goals-against-average and .891 save percentage.
• A YEAR AGO: The Cardinals closed out the 2021 season with a 7-3-1 record in MIAC play and a 13-5-2 overall record — reaching the MIAC Tournament semifinals, where they dropped a 3-2 decision to second-seeded Saint Benedict. … The Cardinals’ seven conference wins are the most since 1995, when the Cardinals went 7-2-1, while SMU’s 13 overall victories are the most since the 2005 team finished 13-5-0. … Saint Mary’s 10-1-1 start to the season was its best start since opening the 1991 season 11-1-0. That 1991 team went on to finish 14-4-0 and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, falling to UC-San Diego in the opening round. … The Cardinals also opened the 1988 season 11-1-0 — it’s the best 12-game start in program history.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The NCAA implemented a new rule beginning with the 2022 that will eliminate all overtimes in regular-season games. Games that are deadlocked following the scheduled 90 minute will go in the books as ties. Once in post-season, if a game is tied following regulation, there will be two, 10-minute overtime periods — with no golden goal — followed by a shootout if the game is still tied.
