Kingston's late goal earns SMU 2-2 tie

WINONA, Minn. — It wasn't the win the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team was hoping for — but taking two of a possible three conference points in their MIAC showdown against St. Olaf Friday night wasn't all bad.

Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) scored late in the third period in rallying the Cardinals to a 2-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tie — and Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.) and Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.) both scored to give SMU a 2-1 win in the shootout for the extra conference point.

Despite peppering the St. Olaf net with an impressive 16 shots, the Cardinals came up empty during a scoreless first period. SMU goalie Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) stopped all nine of the Oles' shot attempts, and the two teams headed into the second period still searching for the game's first goal.

And they both found their first goal in the first two minutes of the middle frame.

Grace Lankas scored for the Oles just 57 seconds into the period, giving the Oles a 1-0 lead, but  SMU wasted no time in responding, as Jordy Wyant (Winnipeg, Manitoba) netted her first goal as a Cardinal — unassisted — just 40 seconds later to tie the score, 1-1.

And that's just where the score would stay going into the second break.

The third period echoed the second, with each team grabbing their second goal of the contest. Maddie Anderson beat Keeley at 5:09 on a power play to give St. Olaf their second lead of the night, 2-1.

Once again, however, the Cardinals had an answer.

Kingston scored an unassisted goal on a laser that zipped over the shoulder of St. Olaf goalie Carly Tuman to once again pull the Cardinals even — and force overtime.

St. Olaf dominated the extra session, outshooting the Cardinals 5-1, but Keeley was up to the challenge and the game was headed to a shootout — which the Cardinals won, 2-1, thanks to goals by Pierpont and Urlaub.

The Cardinals (1-5-1 MIAC, 4-9-1 overall) will take on the Oles once again on Saturday, as the two teams head to the St. Olaf Ice Arena in Northfield, Minn., for the 4 p.m. rematch.
