SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference series against Bethel on Friday sitting at 5-11-1 overall, including a 2-7-1 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: SMU and St. Catherine split their two-game MIAC series last weekend. Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) had a hand in all five Saint Mary’s goals — scoring three times and assisting on the other two — as Saint Mary’s cruised to a 5-0 conference win over St. Catherine last Friday at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena, while the Wildcats also won on their home ice, dealing SMU a 5-3 setback in the rematch the following afternoon at Drake Arena in St. Paul, Minn.
• ROAD SUCCESS: Three of the Cardinals’ five wins this season have come on the road. Saint Mary’s is sitting at 2-4-1 on its home ice this year, while sporting a 3-7-0 mark away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• HITTING THE BRAKES: With last weekend’s split against St. Catherine, Saint Mary’s moved to 4-2-1 in its last seven games. The Cardinals’ 2-1 loss to St. Olaf on Jan. 14 snapped their season-high four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1). Prior to the one goal loss, Saint Mary’s had swept Lawrence (3-0, 8-0) on Dec. 9-10, beaten UW-Stevens Point (2-1 in OT) on Jan. 7, and tied the Oles 2-2 on Jan. 13.
• WORKING OVERTIME: SMU’s 2-2 tie against St. Olaf on Jan. 13 was its second straight overtime game — and its third OT contest of the season. Along with their 2-2 stalemate vs. St. Olaf, the Cardinals also own a 2-1 overtime win over UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 7 and a 3-2 OT loss to Lake Forest on Oct. 29. … Saint Mary’s played four overtime games a year ago, finishing 1-1-2 in those four contests.
• A NIGHT TO REMEMBER: Polzin recorded her first collegiate hat trick and her first career five-point game in last Friday’s 5-0 win over St. Catherine. The hat trick was Saint Mary’s first since Bailey Wendt scored four times against Bethel on Feb. 3, 2018, while her five-point night was the team’s first since Nicole Olson equaled that feat with three goals and two helpers against St. Norbert on Nov. 4, 2011.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: With her three goals against St. Catherine Friday, Polzin moved into a tie with Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.) for the team lead in goals with five, one more than Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta) and Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.). Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.) and Jenna Kurkowski are sitting with three goals, followed by Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.), Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.), and Taverie Sherner (Maple Grove, Minn.) with two. … SMU’s 36 goals have come from 16 different players.
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s has had five players score their first collegiate goals this season. Jordy Wyant (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored career-goal No. 1 against St. Olaf on Jan. 13; Teagan Phillips (Oregon, Wis.) and Sherner netted goal No. 1 as a Cardinal against Augsburg on Nov. 18; Dornself’s first-period goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was her first as a Cardinal; and Parker netted her first as a Cardinal against Hamline on Nov. 12. … Saint Mary’s had 10 players net their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: SMU’s eight goals in its 8-0 win over Lawrence on Dec. 10 were scored by eight different players — Dornself, Parker, Braun, Kingston, Kurkowski, Katie Devine (Glencoe, Ill.), Elle Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.), and Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.).
• SPREADING THE WEALTH II: Saint Mary’s 10 points in its 4-2 win over Augsburg on Nov. 18 came from 10 different players: Phillips, Sherner, Urlaub, and Polzin scored goals, while Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.), Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Minn.), Hegdahl, Dornself, Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.), and Parker all had assists.
• LENDING A HAND: Polzin enters this weekend’s games against Bethel leading the Cardinals with six assists, two up on Kingston, Urlaub, and Carmean, while Parker, Pierpont, Hegdahl, and Kraus all have three.
• POINT PRODUCERS: With her five points against St. Catherine last Friday, Polzin became the first Cardinal to reach double digits with 11 points, followed by Kingston with eight, and Dornself and Urlaub with six.
• DOUBLING UP: SMU had four players post multiple-point games against Lawrence on Dec. 10. Devine, Kurkowski, and Kingston all had a goal and an assist, while Polzin had two assists.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) have shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals this season. Keeley has stopped 307 of the 334 shots she’s faced in 12 appearances and owns a 2.70 goals-against-average and .919 save percentage, while Rimstad has recorded 156 saves in her first eight appearances as a Cardinal and sports a 2.01 GAA and .918 save %. … Keeley has stopped 30 or more shots in six of her 10 starts this season. … Rimstad’s 40-save showing vs. Hamline Nov. 12 was a career-high.
• A BRICK WALL: Rimstad stopped all 24 shots she faced against St. Catherine last Friday and has now posted shutouts in two of her last three starts — having recorded a 13-save shutout against Lawrence on Dec. 10. … Rimstad had her scoreless minute streak ended at 195:56 minutes, giving up a first-period goal to St. Catherine’s Ellie Skaja at 7:42 of the first period last Saturday. It was the first goal the SMU freshman has allowed since a late, third-period goal by Hamline on Nov. 12.
• THROWING UP BLANKS: Keeley and Rimstad both collected shutouts against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10. Keeley kicked out all 15 shots she faced on Dec. 9 for her first shutout of the season, and fourth of her collegiate career, while Rimstad stopped all 13 shots in the rematch the following afternoon for career shutout No. 1.
• BACK-TO-BACK GOOSE EGGS: The Cardinals 3-0 and 8-0 wins over Lawrence on Dec. 9-10 mark the first time since the 2003-04 season in which SMU has posted back-to-back shutouts. SMU did it three times during the 2003-04 season — beating Concordia (3-0) and St. Catherine (5-0); Bethel (3-0 and 5-0); and Hamline 8-0 and 5-0).
• CAREER NIGHT: Keeley stopped a career-high 49 shots in SMU’s 3-2 loss to Augsburg on Nov. 19. The 49 saves were four more than her previous career-best and the most by a Cardinal goalie since Ary Ziakas stopped 55 against Gustavus on Jan. 28, 2022.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: Saint Mary’s finished with 121 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10, while holding the Vikings to a combined 28. SMU outshot Lawrence 28-1 in the first period on Dec. 9 and boasted a 26-5 edge in shots in the second period on Dec. 10.
• MAKING THEIR MARK: The Cardinals’ 59 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9 rank No. 6 all-time, while their 62 shots the following afternoon are tied for No. 3 all-time. The program-record for shots on goal in a game is 80 against St. Olaf on Nov. 11, 2000.
• TOUGH STRETCH: The Cardinals’ matchup against No. 1-ranked Gustavus last weekend marked the ninth and 10th straight games against teams appearing the USCHO.com Poll. Lake Forest, Hamline, and Augsburg have all received votes in the USCHO.com Top 15, while SMU has also faced then-No. 5 UW-Eau Claire (now ranked No. 9) and then-No. 7 UW-River Falls (currently ranked No. 2).
• BY THE NUMBERS: SMU has scored eight goals in the first period, while netting 14 goals in the second and 14 in the third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored 12 times in the first period, 17 times in the second, 15 times in the third. … SMU’s four third-period goals against Lawrence on Dec. 10 were a single-period season-high. … Saint Mary’s is 5-for-58 on the power-play, while killing off 50 of its opponents’ 60 PP opportunities. … The Cardinals recorded season-highs in goals (8), assists (8), points (16), and shots on goal (62) against Lawrence on Dec. 10.
BETHEL ROYALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Royals head into the weekend’s games against Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-12-0 overall, including a 1-9-0 mark through the first 10 games of the season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Emily Wiltse scored three goals and Anna Hanson stopped all 19 shots she faced, as the Royals closed out the nonconference portion of their schedule with a 4-0 victory over Northland Tuesday evening in Ashland, Wis.
• HEATING UP: After going 2-11-0 in their first 13 games, the Royals have won two of their last three  including their first MIAC win of the season with a 3-2, overtime win over Concordia last Friday.
• HOME AND ROAD SUCCESS: Bethel has posted two of its four wins on its home ice. BU is 2-7-0 at home, while going 2-5-0 away from Bethel Arena.
• FAMILIAR OUTCOME: Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Northland marked the second time this season the Royals have beaten the Lumberjills by a 4-0 margin, having also defeated NC 4-0 on Dec. 6. In fact, Bethel has played three games this season decided by shutout, with all three decided by a 4-0 final score — the Royals dropped a 4-0 decision to St. Olaf on Nov. 11.
• CLOSE CALLS: Eight of Bethel’s 16 games have been decided by one goal — including two of its four wins. BU has beaten Aurora (3-2) and Concordia (3-2 OT), while falling to Aurora (2-1), St. Olaf (4-3), Saint Benedict (3-2), Concordia-WI (4-3 OT), and Concordia (3-2).
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Kallie Abrahamson heads into this weekend’s games against Saint Mary’s leading the team in goals with six, two more than Lindsey Alberg, while Wiltse and Lexi DeBace have each scored three times. … Wiltse’s three goals against Northland on Tuesday were a single-game season-high.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Along with her team-leading three goals, Abrahamson also sits atop the team lead in assists with six. Lindsey Muntifering and Julia McAlpin are second on the team with five helpers, followed by DeBace, Brynn Swenson, McKayla Machitt, and Maddi O’Connor with four each. … BU has had a player record two assists in a game twice — O’Connor and Wiltse both achieved the feat against Concordia-WI on Jan. 6.
• POINT PRODUCTION: BU has one player — Abrahamson (12) — who has reached double figures in points. DeBace and Muntifering are second with seven points, with Wiltse, Swenson, and McAlpin all tied with six.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Hanson and Ashley Hess have shared the goaltending duties for the Royals this season. Hanson owns a 2.76 goals-against-average and .918 save percentage in 10 appearances (586:44 minutes), while Hess boasts a 3.65 GAA and .891 save % in seven games (378:06). … Hanson has amassed a team-leading 301 saves, with Hess chipping in 188. … Hess made a single-game season-high 45 saves against Aurora on Nov. 5. … Hanson owns both of BU’s shutouts — stopping 23 and 19 shots, respectively, in back-to-back 4-0 wins over Northland.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Bethel has played four overtime games this season, going 1-3-0 — with three of the four being decided by 3-2 outcomes. BU defeated Concordia (3-2), while falling to Saint Benedict (3-2), Concordia (3-2), and Concordia-WI (4-3). … BU has been outscored 52-32 through 16 games — 22-14 in the first period, 14-12 in the second, and 13-5 in the third. … The Royals are 6-for-54 on the power play (11.1 %). … The Royals posted single-game season-highs in goals (4), assists (7), points (11) and shots on goal (63) against Northland on Dec. 6. BU equaled that season-high in goals in its second meeting with Northland on Tuesday. …
