SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its nonconference matchup at Lawrence on Tuesday sitting at 5-6-1 overall, and 3-3-0 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Collin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.) scored twice, and Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), Thomas Magnavite (Chicago, Ill.), and Trevor Schroder (Des Moines, Iowa) also found the back of the net, as SMU beat MSOE 5-3 at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena on Dec. 10.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Tuesday’s game at Lawrence is the first of four straight road games for the Cardinals, who has played nine of its first 12 games on their home ice. SMU is 4-4-1 at home, while going 1-2-0 away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• STREAKING: The Cardinals head into Tuesday’s nonconference game against Lawrence riding a season-high four-game winning streak. After opening the season 1-6-1 — including a season-high four-game losing streak — SMU has rattled off wins over Lawrence (3-1), Gustavus (4-1 & 4-3), and MSOE (5-3). …
• OFFENSE IN SYNC: After scoring just four goals during its four-game losing streak, the Cardinals have netted 16 goals during its current four-game run — including back-to-back four-goal efforts against Gustavus on Dec. 3-4 and a five-goal showing vs. MSOE on Dec. 10. … SMU’s five goals against MSOE on Dec. 10 equal its season-high. The Cardinals also scored five in a season-opening 5-5 tie with Lake Forest on Oct. 28.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Schroder’s empty-net goal against MSOE on Dec. 10 was his team-leading fifth of the season, two more than Tushie, Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.), Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), and Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.). Magnavite, Callahan Nauss, Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia), Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.), and Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.) are all sitting with two goals. … SMU has gotten goals from 15 different players.
• DOUBLING UP: Saint Mary’s has had a player score two goals in a game three this season — including a multiple-goal scorer in each of its last two games. Winter scored twice against Lake Forest on Oct. 28; Tharaldson recorded his first collegiate two-goal game against Gustavus on Dec. 3; and Tushie collected his first two-goal game as a Cardinal against MSOE on Dec. 10.
• MULTIPLE POINTS: Campion picked up a pair of assists to go with his first-period goal against Gustavus on Dec. 2 en route to his first collegiate three-point night, while Winter picked up helpers on three of SMU’s four goals vs. the Gusties for his first career three-assist game — and third career three-point night.
• FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL: Saint Mary’s has four players who have scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform this season. Jackson Nauss tallied his first in a Cardinal jersey last Friday vs. Gustavus; Westbrook scored his first SMU goal vs. UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 11; Tushie netted his first SMU goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29; and Campion delivered his first career goal vs. Hamline on Nov. 5.
• LENDING A HAND: Tharaldson has racked up a team-leading seven assists, one more than both Winter and Poellinger, while Young has collected four helpers and Tushie and Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.) both own three.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Winter, and Tharaldson enter Tuesday’s game at Lawrence sitting atop the Cardinal points heap with nine, followed Poellinger with eight, Young with seven, and Tushie with six.
• WEEKLY HONORS: After scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, Poellinger was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Oct. 31.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Saint Mary’s has used three different goalies this season. Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) has stopped 266 of the 295 shots he’s faced in nine appearances en route to a 3.22 GAA and a .902 save percentage, while Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) boasts a 5.34 GAA, .831 save % and has made 69 saves in his three starts. A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) has appeared in two games and owns a boasts a 7.29 GAA and .812 save %. … Sankner has stopped 30 or more shots nine times in his career — including four times this season. … Sankner delivered a career-high 45-save effort against Augsburg on Nov. 18. … Close recorded a career-high 36 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 29.
• BIG OFFENSIVE NIGHT: The Cardinals’ five goals against both Lake Forest on Oct. 28 and vs. MSOE on Dec. 10 were the most since SMU netted six against Bethel on March 6, 2021.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals’ 5-5 tie against Lake Forest on Oct. 28 was their fourth OT contest over the past two seasons.
• CLEAN SHEET: Saint Mary’s was not whistled for a penalty in its 3-1 win over Lawrence on Nov. 22. All told, there were just two penalties called in the nonconference contest, both against the Vikings.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s has scored first in each of its last four games, pushing its record to 4-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal, while going 1-5-1 when its opponent scores first. … The Cardinals were 6-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal a year ago, while going 2-13-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: It was a tale of late-game heroics in SMU’s conference-opening series against Hamline on Nov. 4-5. HU scored two goals in the game’s final 3:33 en route to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in the first game on Nov. 4, with SMU turning the tables in the rematch, scoring twice in a 33-second span in the final two minutes of regulation en route to a 2-1 victory the following evening.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s has scored 11 goals in the first period, eight in the second, and 13 in the third. SMU has been outscored 12-11 in the opening period, 17-8 in the second, and 17-13 in the third. … Saint Mary’s is 7 of 46 on the power play (14.2 %), while killing off 41 of its opponents 51 power-play opportunities (86.9 %).
LAWRENCE VIKINGS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Vikings head into Tuesday’s nonconference game against Saint Mary’s sitting at 2-9-1 overall, including a 1-5-0 showing through the first six games of the NCHA schedule
• LAST TIME OUT: St. Norbert scored single goals in all three periods, while holding Lawrence to a lone third-period tally, as the fifth-ranked Green Knights dealt the Vikings a 3-1 setback Saturday evening in Appleton, Wis.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Tuesday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the second of four straight home games for the Vikings, who have played just three of their first 12 games on their home ice. Lawrence is 1-2-0 at the Appleton Ice Center, while sitting at 1-7-1 on the road.
• AGAINST THE MIAC: Tuesday’s game vs. the Cardinals is the second against the Cardinals and fourth against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Along with a 3-1 loss in their first meeting on Nov. 22, the Vikings have also beaten Gustavus (6-3) and tied Saint John’s (2-2).
• OFFENSIVE WOES: Lawrence has been held to one goal or less in seven of its nine losses, and has scored three of more goals just three times in 12 games — falling to St. Norbert 7-3 on Nov. 12, and beating MSOE (4-3 in OT) on Nov. 19 and Gustavus (6-3) on Dec. 9.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Zach Lodes has scored a team-leading eight goals, accounting for eight of the Vikings’ 21 goals through 12 games. … Lodes scored a career-high five goals in LU’s 6-3 win over Gustavus on Dec. 9. … Kyle Gierman, Jayden Jensen, and Jack Michels have all netted a pair of goals, with Ivan Galaguzov, Cory Checco, Zack Olen, Jordan Cooper, Akmed Malsagov, Cole-0Thomas Johnson, and Tyler Jensen accounting for the other seven tallies
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Gierman, Galaguzov, and Checco all share the team lead in assists with four each, one more than Hugh Anderson, and two up on Lodes, Jayden Jensen, Michels, Olen, James Scott, and Cristian Tallrico.
• POINT PRODUCTION: With his eight goals and two assists, Lodes leads Lawrence with 10 points, followed by Gierman with six, and Galaguzov and Checco with five. … Lawrence has gotten at least one point from 20 different players. … Lodes had a hand in all six goals against Gustavus on Dec. 9, scoring five times and assisting on the Vikings’ other goal in the 6-3 victory.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Owen Carlson and Brian Tallieu have shared the goaltending duties through 12 games, with Carlson compiling a 3.09 goals-against-average and .912 save percentage in eight starts, while Tallieu boasts a 3.83 GAA and .881 save percentage in four starts. … Carlson has amassed 280 saves and owns a 2-5-1 record, with Tallieu chipping in 111 saves. … Carlson made a season-high 43 saves in Lawrence’s 3-1 loss to Saint Mary’s in the teams’ first meeting on No. 22.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Lawrence has scored 21 goals on 350 shots (1.75 goals-per-game), while allowing 43 goals on 414 shots (3.58 gpg). … Seven of the Vikings’ 21 goals have come from special teams — six power-play tallies and one shorthanded goal. … The Vikings have scored just three first-period goals, being outscored 14-3. LU has also been outscored in the second (10-8) and third (16-7). … Lawrence set season-highs for goals (6), assists (9) and points (15) in its 6-3 win over Gustavus on Dec. 9, while their 45 shots on goal against Buffalo State on Oct. 29 were also a season-best.
