SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into their nonconference matchup against UW-Stevens Point Saturday sitting at 3-9-0 overall record, including a 1-4-0 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals erupted for a combined 11 goals in blanking Lawrence 3-0 and 8-0 on Dec. 9-10, 2022, in Appleton, Wis. SMU scored single goals in all three periods — and held a 59-15 advantage in shots on goal — in its 3-0 win on Dec. 9, before getting eight goals from eight different players in routing the Vikings 8-0 the following afternoon.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Saturday’s game against UW-Stevens Point is just the fifth home game of the season for the Cardinals, who played eight of their 12 2022 games on the road. SMU is 0-4-0 on their home sheet, while going 3-5-0 away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: SMU’s eight goals in its 8-0 win over Lawrence on Dec. 10 were scored by eight different players — Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta, Katie Devine (Glencoe, Ill.), Jenna Kurkowski (North Branch, Minn.), Elle Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.), Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.), Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.), Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.), and Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.).
• SPREADING THE WEALTH II: Saint Mary’s 10 points in its 4-2 win over Augsburg on Nov. 18 came from 10 different players: Teagan Phillips, Taverie Sherner (Maple Grove, Minn.), Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.), and Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) scored goals, while Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.), Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Minn.), Hegdahl, Dornself, Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.), and Parker all had assists.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: With her goal against Lawrence, Dornself pushed her team-leading goals total to four, one more than Kingston and Braun, and two in front of Kurkowski and Parker.
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s has had four players score their first collegiate goals this season. Phillips and Sherner netted goal No. 1 as a Cardinal against Augsburg on Nov. 18, while Dornself’s first-period goal against Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was her first as a Cardinal, and Parker netted career goal No. 1 against Hamline on Nov. 12. … Saint Mary’s had 10 players net their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• LENDING A HAND: Polzin enters Saturday’s matchup against UW-Stevens Point lead the Cardinals with four assists, while Carmean, Pierpont, and Urlaub all have three. Dornself, Parker, Devine, Hegdahl, Kraus, Ausman, and Wyant have all collected a pair of helpers.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Dornself sits atop the team’s points race with six, one more than Polzin, while Kingston, Parker, Carmean, Pierpont, and Urlaub are all two points back.
• DOUBLING UP: SMU had four players post multiple-point games against Lawrence on Dec. 10. Devine, Kurkowski, and Kingston all had a goal and an assist, while Polzin had two assists.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) have shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals this season. Keeley has stopped 263 of the 284 shots she’s faced in eight starts and owns a 2.78 goals-against-average and .926 save percentage, while Rimstad has recorded 108 saves in her first five appearances as a Cardinal and sports a 2.12 GAA and .914 save %. … Keeley has stopped 30 or more shots in six of her eight starts this season. … Rimstad’s 40-save showing vs. Hamline Nov. 12 was a career-high.
• THROWING UP BLANKS: Keeley and Rimstad both collected shutouts against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10. Keeley kicked out all 15 shots she faced on Dec. 9 for her first shutout of the season, and fourth of her collegiate career, while Rimstad stopped all 13 shots in the rematch the following afternoon for career shutout No. 1.
• BACK-TO-BACK GOOSE EGGS: The Cardinals 3-0 and 8-0 wins over Lawrence on Dec. 9-10 mark the first time since the 2003-04 season in which SMU has posted back-to-back shutouts. SMU did it three times during the 2003-04 season — beating Concordia (3-0) and St. Catherine (5-0); Bethel (3-0 and 5-0); and Hamline 8-0 and 5-0).
• CAREER NIGHTS: Keeley stopped a career-high 49 shots in SMU’s 3-2 loss to Augsburg on Nov. 19. The 49 saves were four more than her previous career-best and the most by a Cardinal goalie since Ary Ziakas stopped 55 against Gustavus on Jan. 28, 2022.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: Saint Mary’s finished with 121 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10, while holding the Vikings to a combined 28. SMU outshot Lawrence 28-1 in the first period on Dec. 9 and boasted a 26-5 edge in shots in the second period on Dec. 10.
• MAKING THEIR MARK: The Cardinals’ 59 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9 rank No. 6 all-time, while their 62 shots the following afternoon are tied for No. 3 all-time. The program-record for shots on goal in a game is 80 against St. Olaf on Nov. 11, 2000.
• TOUGH STRETCH: The Cardinals’ matchup against No. 1-ranked Gustavus last weekend marked the ninth and 10th straight games against teams appearing the USCHO.com Poll. Lake Forest, Hamline, and Augsburg have all received votes in the USCHO.com Top 15, while SMU has also faced then-No. 5 UW-Eau Claire (now ranked No. 9) and then-No. 7 UW-River Falls (currently ranked No. 2).
• WORKING OVERTIME: SMU’s 3-2 loss to Lake Forest on Oct. 29 was the Cardinals’ first overtime game of the season. Saint Mary’s played four overtime games a year ago, finishing 1-1-2 in those four contests.
• FIRST-GOAL ADVANTAGE: The team that has scored first has won 31 of the Cardinals’ last 35 games. Two of those four exceptions came on Oct. 28-29, when Saint Mary’s scored first in back-to-back losses Lake Forest
• BY THE NUMBERS: SMU has scored six goals in the first period, while netting nine goals in both the second and third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored 10 times in the first period, 13 times in the second, 10 times in the third, and once in OT. … SMU’s four third-period goals against Lawrence on Dec. 10 were a single-period season-high. … Saint Mary’s scored a pair of power-play goals against Lawrence on Dec. 10 and is now 4-for-47 on the power-play, while killing off 40 of its opponents’ 49 PP opportunities.
UW-STEVENS POINT POINTERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Pointers head into Saturday’s nonconference game against Saint Mary’s sporting a 7-5-1 overall record, including a 2-1-0 showing through the first three games of the WIAC schedule.
• LAST TIME OUT: Lauren Wincentsen scored a power-play goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, lifting the Pointers to a 1-0 victory over Hamline Friday evening in St. Paul, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: The Pointers nonconference matchup against Saint Mary’s is their fourth straight road game. UW-Stevens Point is 2-4-0 in its first six road contests this season, while boasting a 4-1-0 mark on their home ice at K.B. Willett Arena.
• AGAINST THE MIAC: Saturday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the fifth straight game against opponents from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the seventh game against an MIAC foe this season. UW-SP has already faced St. Olaf (L, 2-1/ W, 4-1), St. Catherine (W, 3-1/L, 5-1), Augsburg (L, 5-1), and Hamline (W, 1-0).
• PUTTING UP BIG NUMBERS: The Pointers have scored three or more goals in six of their seven wins — including a season-high five goals in victories over Lawrence (5-0) and Northland (5-1). On the flip side, UW-SP has surrendered a season-high five goals three times, including in back-to-back 5-1 losses to Augsburg and St. Catherine in their final two games before the holiday break.
• OFFENSIVE LEADER: Courtney Leising has scored a team-leading nine goals and is one of 13 Pointers to net at least one goal through the first 13 games of the season. Maddie Andrie, Natalie Ahern, Ali Granovsky, and Annika Horman are all second to Leising with three goals each, while Sarah Aadalen and Grace Torma each own two goals. … Leising has scored two goals in a game twice, while Ahern has achieved the feat once.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Laina Berthiaume has amassed a team-leading eight assists, three more than both Andrie and Aadalen. Katie Stanius has collected three helpers, with Grace Torma, Josie Bender, Gina Magro, and McKenna Piekarski each chipping in two.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Fueled by her team-leading nine goals, Leising sits atop the Pointers’ points lead with 10, followed by Berthiaume and Andrie with eight each. Aadalen is fourth on the squad with seven points. … UW-SP has had a player record a season-high two points in a game 10 times — led by Leising, Berthiaume, Ahern, and Aadalen, who have all done it twice.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Olivia Schultz has played every minute in goal for the Pointers, compiling a 1.93 goals-against-average and .941 save percentage. … Schultz has made 402 saves in 13 starts, including eight games with 30 or more saves. Schultz stopped 41 shots against both St. Norbert and Augsburg, and posted a season-high 48-save effort against St. Olaf on Oct. 29.
• BY THE NUMBERS: UW-Stevens Point has scored 31 goals through 13 games, while its opponents have netted 29. The Pointers have scored 10 goals in both the first and second periods, while netting 11 goals in the third. … UW-SP has scored first in eight of its first 13 games. … The Pointers have converted on 9 of 39 power-play opportunities (23.1 %) and have killed off 30 of 33 opponents’ PP chances (90.1 %). … UW-Stevens Point has played one overtime game this season, battling St. Norbert to a 3-3 tie on Nov. 8.
