WS: St. Olaf deals Cardinals 1-0 setback

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University and St. Olaf women's soccer teams have been involved in more than their fair share of nailbiters this season.

The Cardinals headed into the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with the Oles having played 10 games decided by one goal or less, while St. Olaf took the field having had nine of its 11 contests decided by one goal of less.

So it should come as no surprise that when the final horn sounded Tuesday, that the final result was yet another one-goal affair.

Unfortunately, this time around, it was Saint Mary's that came out on the short end of the stick, as St. Olaf netted the game's only goal in the 13th minute in dealing SMU a 1-0 setback at Rolf Melby Field.

The Oles grabbed the momentum early, scoring what proved to be the game's only goal just 13:08 into the opening half, as Marit Klagge took a feed from Rachael Wilson, worked the ball into the box and rifled a shot past SMU goalkeeper McKenzie Munson (Plain City, Utah.).

St. Olaf maintained that one-goal advantage the rest of the way — thanks in large part to a smothering defense that limited SMU to just three shots on goal in each half.

Munson finished with four saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) stopped the lone shot she faced in 34 minutes of relief. STO goalkeeper Maddie Black earned the shutout, stopping all six Saint Mary's shots on goal.

The Cardinals (2-5-0 MIAC, 7-6-1 overall) — who had their four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) snapped with the loss — are back in action on Saturday, when they return home to Ochrymowycz Field for a 3:30 p.m. MIAC matchup against St. Scholastica.
