WINONA, Minn. — If there was one thing the Saint Mary's volleyball team could not afford to do Friday evening against St. Catherine, it was to have the match extended to a fifth set.
Â
After all, the Wildcats came into the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with a perfect 5-0 record in five-setters.
Â
Unfortunately, the Cardinals didn't have the opportunity to put an end to the Wildcats' five-set unbeaten streak, as St. Catherine needed just three sets in dealing SMU a 3-0 setback at the Saint Mary's Gym.
Â
SCU opened with a 25-19 victory in the opening set, and rode the momentum to 25-18 and 25-16 wins in the final two sets to complete the sweep.
Â
Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.) led the way for SMU collecting 12 kills and seven digs, while
Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.) added 26 assists and Isabelle Schei delivered a career-high 11 digs.
Jazzy Davis (La Crosse, Wis.) also finished in double figured in digs, chipping in 10
Â
The Cardinals (2-5 MIAC, 10-16 overall) are right back in action on Saturday, as they make the trek to Duluth, Minn., for a 5 p.m. MIAC matchup against St. Scholastica.
