SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s closed out the 2022-23 season sitting at 11-13-1 overall, while finishing 7-9-0 in conference play.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals played 14 of its 25 games in 2022-23 on their home ice. SMU finished 6-7-1 in those 14 contests, while sporting a 5-6-0 record away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.) and Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia) ended the year tied for the team lead with seven goals, one more than Colin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.), Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), and Trevor Schroder. Thomas Magnavite (Chicago, Ill.), Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.), and Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) each scored five times.
• TOSSING THE HAT x 2: Sheberov netted his first collegiate hat trick against Lawrence on Jan. 2, while Lindauer equaled that feat with his first hatty as a Cardinal against St. Scholastica on Feb. 10 — scoring SMU’s last three goals in its 7-4 win. … The hat tricks by Sheberov and Lindauer mark the first time SMU has had two players score three goals in a game since the 2015-16 season, when the Cardinals had three players record hat tricks.
• DOUBLING UP: Saint Mary’s had a player score two or more goals in a game six times last season — including twice by Lindauer, who recorded a two-goal game against St. Olaf on Jan. 13 to go along with a Feb. 10, 2023 hat trick vs. St. Scholastica. … Sheberov (3 goals), Winter (2 goals), Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis. / 2 goals), and Tushie (2 goals) have also enjoyed multiple-goal games this season.
• FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL: Saint Mary’s had six players who scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform a year ago: Campion, Tushie, Luke Cioli (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Blake Campbell (Keller, Texas), Jackson Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), and Brendan Westbrook (Pine City, Minn.).
• SCORING IN BUNCHES: With their seven-goal outburst against St. Scholastica on Feb. 10, the Cardinals finished the year scoring four or more goals in a game nine times this season — including back-to-back four-goal efforts against Gustavus on Dec. 3-4, five-goal showings vs. MSOE on Dec. 10 and Northland on Jan. 6, seven-goal performances against Lawrence on Jan. 3, Saint John’s on Feb. 4, and St. Scholastica last Friday, and a season-high eight-game outburst in beating St. Olaf 8-2 on Jan. 13.
• LONG TIME COMING: The Cardinals’ season-high eight goals in their 8-2 win over St. Olaf on Jan. 13 were the most in a game since SMU netted eight against Hamline on Feb. 23, 2014. … SMU’s seven goals in its 7-3 win over Saint John’s on Feb. 4, meanwhile, were the most the Cardinals had scored against the Johnnies since Jan. 16, 1999, when SMU beat SJU 7-4.
• LENDING A HAND: Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) racked up a team-leading 12 assists a year ago, one more than Poellinger, while Young, Magnavite, and Campion each recorded eight assists, and Lindauer, Tushie, Winter, and Gabe Potyk (Lake Orion, Mich.) all finished with seven.
• POINT PRODUCERS: The Cardinals boasted 10 players who accumulated 10 or more points, led by Poellinger and Tharaldson with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Lindauer (14), Young (14), Tushie (13), Magnavite (13), Campion (12), Winter (12), Potyk (10), and Sheberov (10) also reached double digits in points.
• LUCKY NO. 3: Lindauer’s hat trick against St. Scholastica on Feb. 10 marked the second time in his career that he posted a 3+ point night, having also posted a career-high four point night (2 goals, 2 assists) against St. Olaf on Jan. 13. … Sheberov and Campion also recorded career-high three-point games in 2022-23 — Sheberov’s coming on three goals against Lawrence on Jan. 2, while Campion picked up a pair of assists to go with his first-period goal against Gustavus on Dec. 2. … Winter collected helpers on three of SMU’s four goals vs. the Gusties on Dec. 2 for his first career three-assist game — and third career three-point night.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Saint Mary’s used three different goalies in 2022-23. Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) stopped 299 of the 331 shots he’s faced in 11 appearances en route to a 3.10 GAA and a .903 save percentage, while A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) appeared in 14 games — including 12 starts — and owned a 3.60 GAA and .896 save %. Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) boasted a 4.96 GAA, .835 save % and has made 76 saves in his four appearances. … Sankner delivered a career-high 45-save effort against Augsburg on Nov. 18, while Ruskowski stopped a season-best 42 shots against St. Olaf on Jan. 13 and Close recorded a career-high 36 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 29.
• FROM DEFENSE TO OFFENSE: Sankner collected his first collegiate assist, getting the lone helper on Sheberov’s first goal in the second period SMU’s 6-3 win over Lawrence on Jan. 2. … Sankner’s assist is the first by a Cardinal goalie since Nick Nash picked up an assist against Gustavus on Oct. 26, 2018.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals played three overtime games last season — beating Bethel 3-2 on Jan. 28, topping Northland 5-4 on Jan. 6, and battling Lake Forest to a 5-5 draw on Oct. 28.
• STREAKING: The Cardinals had their season-high six-game win streak snapped with their 4-1 loss to UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 7. After opening the season 1-6-1, SMU had rattled off wins over Lawrence (3-1), Gustavus (4-1 & 4-3), MSOE (5-3), Lawrence (6-3), and Northland (5-4 OT). … Saint Mary’s six-game win streak was its longest since winning six in a row during the 2005-06 season.
• CLEAN SHEET: Saint Mary’s was not whistled for a penalty in its 3-1 win over Lawrence on Nov. 22. All told, there were just two penalties called in the nonconference contest, both against the Vikings.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s finished the year 8-3-0 when netting the game’s first goal, while going 3-10-1 when its opponent scores first. … The Cardinals were 6-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal a year ago, while going 2-13-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: It was a tale of late-game heroics in SMU’s conference-opening series against Hamline on Nov. 4-5. HU scored two goals in the game’s final 3:33 en route to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in the first game on Nov. 4, with SMU turning the tables in the rematch, scoring twice in a 33-second span in the final two minutes of regulation en route to a 2-1 victory the following evening.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s and its opponents both scored 22 goals in the first period, and SMU was outscored 34-23 in the second and 38-29 in the third. … Saint Mary’s closed out the year 15 of 97 on the power play (15.5 %), while killing off 83 of its opponents’ 102 power-play opportunities (81.4 %). … SMU set season-highs in goals (8), assists (14), and points (22) against St. Olaf on Jan. 13, while its 46 shots on goal against Lawrence on Nov. 22 are also a season high
LAKE FOREST SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Foresters closed out their 2022-23 campaign with a 11-12-4 overall record, including a 7=8-3 showing in NCHA Play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Lake Forest was eliminated from post-season play in the quarterfinals of the NCHA Harris Cup, splitting its two games with 10th-ranked Aurora — losing 4-1 and winning 3-2 — before dropping a 4-0 decision in the 20-minute mini-game tie-breaker.
• ROAD SWEET HOME: The Foresters collected seven of their 11 wins on the road last season. Lake Forest boasted a 4-6-2 mark at home, while going 7-6-2 away from Alumni Memorial Arena.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Lake Forest closed out the 2022-23 season boasting a pair of players who reached double figures in goals. Colin Bella netted a team-high 14 goals in his first season in a Forester jersey, while David Cohen closed out his Lake Forest career with 10 goals. Jared Gerger and Justin Ross finished the season tied for third with nine goals each. … Seven of Bella’s 14 goals came on the power play. He was the only Forester with more than two PP goals last season.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Matteas Derraugh dished out a team-high 14 assists a year ago, with Scotty Nicholson (13), Bella (12), and Cohen (11) also collecting 10+ helpers last season.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Bella ended the year with a team-high 26 points. He was one of 12 Foresters who collected 10 or more points, including three — being joined by Cohen (21) and Derraugh (20) – who ended the year with 20+ points. … Jared Gerger (18), Justin Ross (18), Nicholson (15), Tyler Nielsen (15), Ben Perkins (13), Connor Scahill (11), Shane Hathaway (10), Griffen Sanorn (10), and Drew Shields (10) also ended the year in double digits in points.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Lake Forest used four different goals in 2022-23, led by Nick Wiencek, who made 19 appearances between the pipes, compiling a 3.50 goals-against-average and .885 save percentage. Carson Poulin (10 GP, 3.13 GAA, .894 save %), Dylan Kruss (9 GP, 2.84 GAA, .918 save %), and Bobby McCloskey (2 GP, 4.00 GAA, .846 save %) also saw time in goal for Lake Forest last season. … Wiencek finished the year with a team-leading 422 saves, and was in goal for seven of the team’s 11 victories.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Foresters, who finished the year scoring 93 goals, scored five or more goals in a game 11 times last season, going 8-1-2 in those 11 contests. … On the flip side, Lake Forest was held to two goals of less in 10 of its 12 losses last season. … The Foresters netted a season-high seven goals three times last season – beating Aurora (7-0), Concordia-WI (7-1), and Lawrence (8-0). LF surrendered a season-high eight goals in falling to MSOE (8-5). … Lake Forest finished the year 3-3-3 against teams ranked in the USCHO.com Poll — 2-1-2 vs. No. 10 Aurora, 1-0-1 vs. No. 3 Adrian, and 0-2-0 vs. No. 9 St. Norbert.
MSOE SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Raiders head into their season-opening weekend against Saint Mary’s and Babson on the heels of a 15-12-0 season in 2022-23, including a 9-9-0 mark in NCHA play
• LAST TIME OUT: MSOE kicked off post-season play with a 2-1 win over fourth-seeded Trine in the quarterfinals of the Harris Cup in Angola, Ind., but came up short, falling 5-3 in Game 2 and dropping a 1-0 decision in the mini-game.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Raiders picked up nine of their 15 wins on their home ice a year ago, going 9-5-0, while sitting at 6-7-0 away from the Kern Center. …
• TOUGH ENDING: MSOE closed out the 2022-23 regular season with four straight games against nationally ranked teams, falling twice to both No. 14 St. Norbert (5-2; 4-3) and No. 10 Aurora (4-1; 7-6). MSOE snapped that four-game slide with its 2-1 win over fourth-seeded Trine in the opening game of the Harris Cup quarterfinals on Feb. 17.
• LIGHTIN THE LAMP: Christian Sabin closed out 2022-23 leading the team with 18 goals. He was one of four Raiders to record 10 or more goals a year ago, being joined by Gramm McCormack (12), Kyle Herbster (10), and Matt Hanewall (10). … All told, MSOE had 18 different players net at least one goal. … Herbster and Jackson Hughes each posted hat tricks last season — Herbster’s against Concordia-WI on Nov. 22 and Hughes’s vs. Lake For3est on Nov. 5.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Herbster delivered a whopping 24 assists last season and was one of five players with 10+ helpers. McCormack was second to Herbster with 18 assists, followed by Sabin (14), Hanewall (11) and Carson Jones (10). Kevin Paganini and Cole Beilke were just one assist shy of joining the double-digit assist club. … McCormack, Hanewall and Sabin all posted three-assist games a year ago.
• POINT PRODUCERS: MSOE boasted 24 players who recorded at least one point last season — including eight who delivered at least 10 points. Herbster led the way for the Raiders with 34 points (10 G, 24 A), followed by Sabin with 32 (18 G, 14 A) and McCormack with 30 (12 G, 18 A).
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Austin Schwab started 20 of the team’s 27 games in goal, compiling a 2.87 goals-against-average and .907 save percentage. Nick Stofcheck appeared in nine games, including six starts, and owned a 3.57 GAA and .863 save %. Spencer Northway was the third goalie to see time between the pipes in 2022-23, stopping 18 of the 20 shots he faced in his lone start. … Schwab closed out the year with 534 saves — including a season-high 40-save effort against Trine on Feb. 17 — with Stofcheck adding 151.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: MSOE scored 88 goals in 2022-23, two more than its opponents. … MSOE netted 30 power-play goals on 132 chances (22.7 %) and killed off 112 of 143 opponent man-advantage opportunities (78.3 %). … MSOE held a 22-19 scoring edge in the first period and a 30-24 advantage in the third, but were outscored 36-33 in the middle frame. … MSOE played three overtime games last season — beating Trine (2-1), while falling to Lawrence (4-3) and Concordia-WI (3-2). … The Raiders scored four or more goals in a game eight times — including a season-high eight goals in an 8-5 win over Lake Forest on Nov. 5.
