SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• LEADERS OF THE PACK: Grant Schneider (Moorhead, Minn.) has been the top male finisher for the Cardinals in 10 of the team’s last 11 races — including all seven a year ago. On the women’s side, four different runners have led the way over the past two seasons, including Caeli McMahon (Holmen, Wis.) and Kendra Klobe (Glencoe, Minn.) this season, and Klobe, Caroline Gearin (Osceola, Wis.), and Emily Kern (Buffalo, Minn.) a year ago.
• LOOKING TO REPEAT: Schneider collected honorable-mention All-MIAC honors after placing 22nd overall at the MIAC Championships a year ago. He is the first Saint Mary’s cross country athlete to claim conference honors since Jovan Newsum was named All-MIAC First Team after placing third overall in 2016.
• GETTING THEIR FEET WET: The Cardinals boasted nine runners who competed in their first collegiate race on Sept. 1 at the Augustana Twilight — Ryan Topolski (Onalaska, Wis. / 22:00.03), Isaiah Fitzgerald (Rochester, Minn. / 22:15.36), Sean Smyth (Pinehurst, N.C. / 22:34.97), Gabe Schonknecht (Chicago, Ill. / 22:43.35), Delorean Peterson (Blair, Wis. / 22:51.49), Caden Fisher (Gardner, Kan. / 24:04.48), Evan Finney (West End, N.C. / 25:24.84), Rheanna Hopkins (Bruce, Wis. / 22:53.36), and Alyssa Kuffel (Rice Lake, Minn. / 27:12.05).
• AUGUSTANA INVITATIONAL: Schneider led the way for the SMU men, breaking the tape in a season-best 8K time of 26:46, while Klobe led the way for the SMU women, racing to a career-best 6K time of 19:16
• BLUGOLD INVITATIONAL: Fitzgerald and McMahon led the way for the Cardinals at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational on Sept. 30, as Fitzgerald clocked a career-best 8-kilometer time of 27:52.60, while McMahon continued to lead the charge for the SMU women, posting a season-best 6K time of 25:53.50 | Recap
• RUNNING OF THE COWS: Schneider— who finished 15th among MIAC runners in the event — led the way for the Cardinal men, breaking the tape in 26:56.80, while McMahon was the SMU women’s top finisher for a second straight meet, posting a 6K time of 26:18.20 | Recap
• AUGUSTANA INVITE: Schneider kicked off his sophomore campaign in much the same fashion as he ended his freshman’s — leading the Cardinal charge with a four-mile time of 21:09.44 at the season-opening Augustana Twilight on Sept. 1 — while McMahon led the charge for the Cardinal women, posting a 5K time of 21:41.28 | Recap
