WINONA, Minn. — It worked in an upset victory over nationally ranked Gustavus on Tuesday, and, four days later, it worked again.
Â
For the second straight game, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team's 1-2 combination of
Cohan Hare (New Richmond, Wis.) and
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) took center stage in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup against Bethel on Saturday against Bethel.
Â
Sessler set up the Royals with a 12-save effort, and Hare knocked them down for the count with a game-tying goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, as the Cardinals extended their unbeaten streak to five straight with a 1-1 tie at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
With the stalemate, the Cardinals improved to 3-0-2 in their last five games, marking the second time in the last three seasons in which SMU put together a five-game unbeaten streak.
Â
Sessler — who stopped a career-high 15 shots in Tuesday's 1-0 victory over 23rd-ranked Gustavus — was at back to his usual brick-wall self against the Royals, stopping 12 of the 13 BU shots he faced.
Â
The one shot Sessler could not handle — a redirection by Dylan Magistad in the 18th minute — gave the Royals a 1-0 advantage that they carried throughout the first half and for the majority of the second.
Â
And with Sessler keeping the Cardinals within a goal, Hare took matters into his own hands with 2:11 remaining on the clock, scoring his second goal in as many games — and his team-leading sixth of the season — firing a missile into the upper right-hand corner, over the outstretched arms of BU goalkeeper Juan Valdivia Cortes.
Â
The Cardinals (2-2-1 MIAC, 6-3-3 overall) are back in action on Wednesday, when they head to Northfield, Minn., for a 4 p.m. conference showdown against St. Olaf.
