WINONA, Minn. – Finally, the Saint Mary's men's soccer team was able to get their home opener. The Cardinals fought the heat Wednesday night but played to a stalemate with Crown College, 1-1.
The Cardinals started hot, outplaying the Polars and taking a whopping 14 shots on goal compared to their opponents' one in the first half.Â
The Cardinals struck first on a perfectly played ball from Gabe Le, maneuvering his way past the Polars' defense and floating a perfect header across the goalkeeper for Gio Barron to head the perfect goal at the back of the net at the 33:48 mark. The goal marks the first for junior Barron of his collegiate career!
Yet, the Polars' one shot on goal seemed to be the difference maker as they tied the game just three minutes later.Â
Neither team could get their offense going like the first half and settled for a combined six shots on goal in the second half.Â
The final best look came with five minutes remaining, when a just-missed shot from Jaydon Singel kept the game even. The teams each played to a tie in their season debuts.Â

The Cardinals are back in action this Saturday, Sept. 5, at Simpson College for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
