MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — After scoring two goals in each of its last two contests, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team was looking to get its offense cranked up when it squared off against Augsburg Friday night.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, their offense decided to take the night off — and Augsburg's was clicking on all cylinders.
The Auggies erupted for six goals, including three in the third period, while the Cardinals' could not get theirs shifted out of neutral in falling to Augsburg 6-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup at Ed Saugestad Rink.
Augsburg got all the offense it would need in the opening period, when Nick Catalano beat SMU goalie
Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) with the only goal of the frame at 15:50.
The Auggies pushed that advantage to 3-0 on second-period goals by Daniel Chladek and Fritz Belisle, and tacked on three more goals in the third period, and Samuel Vyletelka did his part by stopping all 41 SMU shots to preserve the shutout win.
Sankner was also busy between the pipes for the Cardinals, kicking out 34 of the Auggies' 40 shots on goal.
The Cardinals (1-3-0 MIAC, 1-6-0 overall) are right back in action against the Auggies on Saturday, when the two teams head to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for the 7:05 p.m. conference rematch.
