Winter, Paduano, Rimstad earn MIAC honors

WINONA, Minn. — Their offensive performances last week were virtual mirror images of each other, so it was only fitting that their conference accolades would follow suit.

Saint Mary's University's Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) and Sophia Paduano (Westby Wis.) — who each scored a pair of goals and added an assist in leading the Cardinal men's and women's hockey teams to nonconference wins last week — were both named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

But wait, there's more.

Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) joined the high-scoring offensive duo in the conference's weekly spotlight, as the sophomore goalie garnered MIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for her efforts against the Pointers.

Winter put together his fourth career three-point night in leading the Cardinal men to an 8-4 nonconference win over Lawrence last Tuesday. The senior scored the first, and last, goals in SMU's six-goal second period, while adding an assist in the SMU victory. Winter currently leads the team in goals (5) and points (7) through nine games.

Paduano, meanwhile, posted her first collegiate two-goal, three-point game, as the Cardinal women pushed their record to 7-2-0 with a 5-2 nonconference win over UW-Stevens Point last Tuesday. The freshman, who picked up an assist on SMU's first goal of the game, netted her first of the contest early in the second period and then added her second seven minutes into the third. Paduano has now scored four goals and added three assists for seven points through SMU's first nine contests.

And while Paduano was doing her part at the offensive end of the rink for the SMU women, Rimstad was doing hers at the defensive end, stopping all 10 shots she faced in nearly 57 minutes of work. The sophomore netminder has been a brick wall all season for the Cardinals, stopping 220 of the 231 shots she's faced, and boasts a 1.23 goals-against-average and .952 save percentage in nine starts.

Both Cardinal teams return to conference play with a pair of games against Gustavus this weekend. The men are on the road on Friday and home on Saturday, while the women will host the defending national champion and top-ranked Gusties on Friday, before hitting the road for Saturday's rematch.
