SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s — which closed out the 2022-23 season sitting at 11-13-1 overall, including finishing 7-9-0 in conference play — heads into this weekend’s conference openers against Hamline sitting at 0-2-0 overall, having dropped both of its games against Lake Forest and MSOE last weekend.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals’ offense came up empty in their season-opener last Friday, falling to Lake Forest 8-0 in Lake Forest, Ill., before dropping a 6-3 decision to Milwaukee School of Engineering the following afternoon in Milwaukee, Wis.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Friday’s game against Hamline is not only the first MIAC contest for the Cardinals, but also SMU’s first home game of the young season. The Cardinals played 14 of its 25 games in 2022-23 on their home ice, finishing 6-7-1.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.), Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.), and Clay Allen (Anchorage, Alaska) have scored SMU’s three goals this season — all coming against MSOE last Saturday. … Winter netted SMU’s first goal of the season at 3:13 of the first period in SMU’s 6-3 loss to MSOE last Saturday. … Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.) and Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia) ended the year tied for the team lead with seven goals
• DOUBLING UP: Saint Mary’s had a player score two or more goals in a game six times last season — including twice by Lindauer. Sheberov (3 goals), Winter (2 goals), Tharaldson (2 goals), and Colin Tushie (2 goals) also enjoyed multiple-goal games last season.
• FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL: Allen’s third-period goal against MSOE last Saturday was the first of his collegiate career. … Saint Mary’s had six players who scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform a year ago.
• LENDING A HAND: Winter, Jack Campion (Crystal, Minn.), Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), and Jackson Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.) collected SMU’s four assists against MSOE last Saturday. … Tharaldson racked up a team-leading 12 assists last season.
• POINT PRODUCERS: With his goal and assist against MSOE last Saturday, Winter sits atop the Cardinals’ early points race with two, one more than Allen, Tharaldson, Campion, Callahan Nauss, and Jackson Nauss. … Tharaldson and Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.) led the Cardinals last season with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) and Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) each made a start last weekend. Ruskowski (8.01 GAA, .822 save %) stopped 37 of the 45 shots he faced, while Sankner (4.18 GAA, .872 save %) made 34 saves on 39 attempts. … Sankner delivered a career-high 45-save effort against Augsburg on Nov. 18, 2022, while Ruskowski stopped a career-best 42 shots against St. Olaf on Jan. 13, 2023.
• FROM DEFENSE TO OFFENSE: Sankner collected his first collegiate assist, getting the lone helper on Sheberov’s first goal in the second period SMU’s 6-3 win over Lawrence on Jan. 2, 2023. … Sankner’s assist is the first by a Cardinal goalie since Nick Nash picked up an assist against Gustavus on Oct. 26, 2018.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s scored first in one of its two games last weekend. The Cardinals were 8-3-0 when netting the game’s first goal last season, while going 3-10-1 when their opponent scores first. … SMU is now 14-5-0 when scoring first since the start of the 2021-22 season, while going 2-14-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: All three of Saint Mary’s goals this season have been at even strength. SMU finished its season-opening weekend 0-for-9 with the man advantage. SMU’s opponents, meanwhile, tallied four of their 14 goals on the power play, going 4-for-9 with the man advantage. … SMU has scored solo goals in all three periods through two games. Seven of the 14 goals allowed by the Cardinals came in the second period. SMU has also allowed five first-period goals and two in the game’s final stanza.
HAMLINE SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Pipers, who finished 2022-23 sitting at 13-11-1, including 6-10-0 in conference play — head into this weekend’s conference-opening series against Saint Mary’s owning a 1-1-0 overall record.
• LAST TIME OUT: Hamline split its season-opening nonconference series against Concordia (Wis.) in Mequon, Wis., last weekend, dropping a 4-2 decision in the opener, before rebounding with a 5-4 win in the rematch — thanks to Kyle Mortenson’s game-winner 2:05 into overtime.
• ROAD WARRIORS: The Pipers kick off their season playing five of their first six games on the road. Along with last weekend’s games at Concordia (WI) and Friday’s showdown at Saint Mary’s, the Pipers will head to Northland and UW-River Falls next weekend. … HU finished 8-3-1 in 12 home games last year, while going 5-8-0 away from TRIA Rink.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: The Pipers’ seven goals against Concordia (Wis.) last weekend came from seven different players — Brandon McNamara, Bronson Adams, Bailey Sommers, Nikolai Dulak, Kyle Mortenson, Scott Moyer, and Carson Simon. … Sam Dobrowski netted a team-high 12 goals, five more than Simon, a year ago.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: McNamara, A.J. Carls, and Jordon Halverson all picked up two assists against Concordia (Wis.) last weekend, with Adams, Sommers, Ryan Brandt, Jacob Hicks, Will Matzke, and Jackson Wille also collecting helpers. … Sommers and Brandt were the Pipers’ assist leaders in 2022-23, each finishing with 10.
• POINT PRODUCERS: Fueled by his goal and two assists against Concordia (Wis.) last weekend, McNamara sits atop the Hamline points race with three, one more than Sommers, Carls, and Halverson. … Hamline boasted seven players who owned 10 or more points last season, led by Dabrowski with 19, Sommers with 16 and Brandt with 14.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Maximillian Haselbacher and Trevor Wong — who both played sparingly in goal a year ago — each made a start against Concordia (Wis.) last weekend. Haselbacher stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced in HU’s 4-2 loss last Friday, while Wong kicked out 20 of the 24 shots he faced in the Pipers’ 5-4 OT win the following night. … Kevin Lake started 23 of the Pipers’ 25 games in goal in 2022-23, compiling a 2.89 goals-against-average and .914 save percentage. He finished the year with 668 saves.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Hamline outshot Concordia (Wis.) 72-54 in the teams’ two-game nonconference series last weekend — and held advantages of 28-18 and 25-16 in the final two periods. … HU netted four of its seven goals last weekend in the second period. The Pipers also scored once in the first and third periods, and once in overtime. On the flip side, Concordia (Wis.) netted five of its eight goals in the first period, with the other three coming in the third. … Hamline went 1-for-9 on the power play against Concordia (Wis.) last weekend, and killed off all four CUW PP opportunities.
