ST. PETER, Minn. — The last time the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team was in action, the Cardinals erupted for eight goals in an 8-4 drubbing of Lawrence.
Â
That was 10 days ago.
Â
And Friday evening, the Cardinals could have used a few of those season-high eight goals.
Â
Saint Mary's came up empty in the goal-scoring department in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with Gustavus, while the Gusties' offense was clicking on all cylinders, as GAC dealt the Cardinals a 4-0 setback at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
Â
After a scoreless first period, the Gusties grabbed the momentum, rattling off goals by Wilmer Svenson, Nate Stone, and Jack Suchy — the latter two less than three minutes apart late in the frame — to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the game's final period.
Â
Gustavus would tack on its fourth unanswered goal, this one off the stick of Jack Kubitz just 4:07 into the third period, and GAC goalie Jackson Hjelle kicked out all 20 shots he faced to preserve the Gustie shutout.
Â
The Cardinals (1-4-0 MIAC, 2-8-0 overall) is right back in action on Saturday, when they return home to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for a 7:05 p.m. rematch with the Gusties.
