SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its conference showdown against Concordia on Friday sitting at 11-11-1 overall and 7-7-0 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals earned a conference-split against league-leading St. Scholastica last weekend in Duluth, getting three unanswered goals from Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.) in the Cardinals’ 7-4 win over the Saints last Friday, while CSS turned the tables, earning the MIAC split with a 4-1 victory the following afternoon.
• PLAYOFF PICTURE: The Cardinals and Cobbers both head into this weekend’s two-game series tied for fourth in the conference standings with 20 points, one point in front of Bethel and two up on St. Olaf in the race for one of the five MIAC Playoff berths. St. Scholastica (35 points), Augsburg (30), and Saint John’s (29) have already locked up playoff spots heading into the final weekend of the regular-season.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals, who have played nine of their last 12 contests on the road — including both games at St. Scholastica last weekend — close out their regular-season schedule with back-to-back home contests against Concordia this weekend. … SMU owns a 5-6-0 record on the road this season, while going 6-5-1 at the SMU Ice Arena.
• SPLITSVILLE: The Cardinals’ 7-4 win and 4-1 loss against St. Scholastica last weekend marked the fifth time in the last six weekends that SMU has split its MIAC series. Saint Mary’s also split against Saint John’s, Bethel, Hamline and St. Olaf, while sweeping Gustavus and falling twice to Augsburg.
• OFFENSE IN SYNC: With their seven-goal outburst against St. Scholastica last Friday night, the Cardinals have now scored four or more goals in a game nine times this season — including back-to-back four-goal efforts against Gustavus on Dec. 3-4, five-goal showings vs. MSOE on Dec. 10 and Northland on Jan. 6, seven-goal performances against Lawrence on Jan. 3, Saint John’s on Feb. 4, and St. Scholastica last Friday, and a season-high eight-game outburst in beating St. Olaf 8-2 on Jan. 13.
• LONG TIME COMING: The Cardinals’ season-high eight goals in their 8-2 win over St. Olaf on Jan. 13 were the most in a game since SMU netted eight against Hamline on Feb. 23, 2014. … SMU’s seven goals in its 7-3 win over Saint John’s on Feb. 4, meanwhile, were the most the Cardinals had scored against the Johnnies since Jan. 16, 1999, when SMU beat SJU 7-4.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: With his three goals against St. Scholastica last Friday, Lindauer moved into a tie for the team lead in goals (7) with Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia). Colin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.), Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), and Trevor Schroder have all scored six goals, while Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), Thomas Magnavite (Chicago, Ill.), Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.), and Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) have all scored five times.
• TOSSING THE HAT x 2: Sheberov netted his first collegiate hat trick against Lawrence on Jan. 2, while Lindauer equaled that feat with his first hatty as a Cardinal against St. Scholastica on Friday — scoring SMU’s last three goals in its 7-4 win. … The hat tricks by Sheberov and Lindauer mark the first time SMU has had two players score three goals in a game since the 2015-16 season, when the Cardinals had three players record hat tricks.
• DOUBLING UP: Saint Mary’s has had a player score two or more goals in a game six times this season — including twice by Lindauer, who recorded a two-goal game against St. Olaf on Jan. 13 to go along with last Friday’s hat trick vs. St. Scholastica. … Sheberov (3 goals), Winter (2 goals), Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis. / 2 goals), and Tushie (2 goals) have also enjoyed multiple-goal games this season.
• FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL: Saint Mary’s has six players who have scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform this season: Campion, Tushie, Luke Cioli (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Blake Campbell (Keller, Texas), Jackson Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), and Brendan Westbrook (Pine City, Minn.).
• LENDING A HAND: Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) has racked up a team-leading 12 assists, one more than Poellinger, while Young and Campion have recorded eight assists, and Lindauer, Tushie, Magnavite, and Winter all own seven.
• POINT PRODUCERS: The Cardinals boast nine players who have racked up 10 or more points this season, led by Poellinger and Tharaldson with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Lindauer (14), Tushie (13), Young (13), Magnavite (12), Campion (12), Winter (12), and Sheberov (10) have also reached double digits in points this season.
• LUCKY NO. 3: Lindauer’s hat trick against St. Scholastica last Friday marked the second time in his career that he has posted a 3+ point night, having also posted a career-high four point night (2 goals, 2 assists) against St. Olaf on Jan. 13. … Sheberov and Campion have also recorded career-high three-point games this season — Sheberov’s coming on three goals against Lawrence on Jan. 2, while Campion picked up a pair of assists to go with his first-period goal against Gustavus on Dec. 2. … Winter collected helpers on three of SMU’s four goals vs. the Gusties on Dec. 2 for his first career three-assist game — and third career three-point night.
• WEEKLY HONORS: After scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, Poellinger was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Oct. 31.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Saint Mary’s has used three different goalies this season. Sankner has stopped 299 of the 331 shots he’s faced in 11 appearances en route to a 3.10 GAA and a .903 save percentage, while A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) has appeared in 12 games — including 10 starts — and owns a 3.28 GAA and .901 save %. Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) boasts a 5.34 GAA, .831 save % and has made 69 saves in his three starts. … Sankner delivered a career-high 45-save effort against Augsburg on Nov. 18, while Ruskowski stopped a season-best 42 shots against St. Olaf on Jan. 13 and Close recorded a career-high 36 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 29.
• FROM DEFENSE TO OFFENSE: Sankner collected his first collegiate assist, getting the lone helper on Sheberov’s first goal in the second period SMU’s 6-3 win over Lawrence on Jan. 2. … Sankner’s assist is the first by a Cardinal goalie since Nick Nash picked up an assist against Gustavus on Oct. 26, 2018.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals have played three overtime games this season — beating Bethel 3-2 last Saturday, topping Northland 5-4 on Jan. 6, and battling Lake Forest to a 5-5 draw on Oct. 28.
• STREAKING: The Cardinals had their season-high six-game win streak snapped with their 4-1 loss to UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 7. After opening the season 1-6-1, SMU had rattled off wins over Lawrence (3-1), Gustavus (4-1 & 4-3), MSOE (5-3), Lawrence (6-3), and Northland (5-4 OT). … Saint Mary’s six-game win streak was its longest since winning six in a row during the 2005-06 season.
• CLEAN SHEET: Saint Mary’s was not whistled for a penalty in its 3-1 win over Lawrence on Nov. 22. All told, there were just two penalties called in the nonconference contest, both against the Vikings.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s is 8-3-0 when netting the game’s first goal, while going 3-8-1 when its opponent scores first. … The Cardinals were 6-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal a year ago, while going 2-13-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: It was a tale of late-game heroics in SMU’s conference-opening series against Hamline on Nov. 4-5. HU scored two goals in the game’s final 3:33 en route to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in the first game on Nov. 4, with SMU turning the tables in the rematch, scoring twice in a 33-second span in the final two minutes of regulation en route to a 2-1 victory the following evening.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s has outscored its opponents 22-20 in the first period, but have been outscored 29-22 in the second and 34-28 in the third. … Saint Mary’s is 14 of 88 on the power play (15.9 %), while killing off 79 of its opponents’ 96 power-play opportunities (82.3 %). … SMU set season-highs in goals (8), assists (14), and points (22) against St. Olaf on Jan. 13, while its 46 shots on goal against Lawrence on Nov. 22 are also a season high
CONCORDIA COBBERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cobbers head into their final two-game conference series of the regular-season sitting at 10-11-2 overall, including a 7-6-1 mark in MIAC action.
• LAST TIME OUT: CC went into overtime in both games against Gustavus last weekend at the Cullen Ice Center in Moorhead, Minn., battling the Gusties to a 4-4 tie (with GAC winning the shootout) on Friday, before netting the OT game-winner in a 4-3 victory the following afternoon.
• HITTING THE ROAD: The Cobbers played their final two regular-season home games last weekend, pushing their record to 5-3-1 at the Cullen Ice Center. CC heads into this weekend’s two road matchups against Saint Mary’s sporting a 5-8-1 record on the road.
• NAILBITERS: Concordia has played nine games decided by one goal or less this season — including each of its last four contests. … The Cobbers dropped 4-3 and 1-0 decisions to Augsburg prior to last weekend’s 4-4 tie and 4-3 win over Gustavus.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Joe Harguindeguy enters the weekend as Concordia’s scoring leader with nine goals, one more than Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe and two in front of Cole O’Connell, Caden Triggs, and Hanson O’Leary. Ben Luedtke is sitting with six goals and Kevin Ness and netted five. … Henkemeyer-Howe scored a season-high three goals against Hamline on Dec. 2.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Concordia boasts four players who have reached double figures in assists this season, led by O’Connell and Liam Haslam with 14 helpers each. Mason Plate and Jaret Lalli have each collected 10 assists, with Harguindeguy and Henkemeyer-Howe sitting one helper shy of the 10-assist mark. … O’Connell and Lalli have each posted three-assist games this season — O’Connell’s against St. Olaf on Jan. 28, and Lalli’s vs. Aurora on Dec. 30.
• POINT PRODUCTION: O’Connell has amassed a team-leading 21 points through 23 games. He is one of nine Cobbers who have collected 10 or more points this season, being joined by Harguindeguy (18), Henkemeyer-Howe (17), Haslam (16), Plate (14), Triggs (11), O’Leary (10), Ben Luedtke (10), and Lalli (10). … Henkemeyer-Howe has posted two games with three points, while O’Connell and Lalli have also recorded three-point performances.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: The Cobbers have used four different goalies this season, led by Matt Fitzgerald, who has made 12 appearances (603:31 minutes) and owns a 2.58 goals-against-average and .892 save percentage. Aaron Dickstein (3.65 GAA, .873 save %, 39:15), Jackson Nelson (3.50 GAA, .852 save %, 325:33), and Evan Babekuhl (3.06 GAA, .893 save %, 58:51) have also seen time between the pipes this season. … Fitzgerald has made 214 saves, followed by Dickstein with 165 and Nelson with 109. … Fitzgerald made a season-high 38 saves against Bethel on Jan. 21.
• WORKING OVERTIME: CC has played five overtime games this season, going 2-1-2 — the Cobbers beat Bethel (3-2) and Gustavus (4-3), lost to Marian (5-4), and tied Hamline (1-1) and Gustavus (4-4).
• BY THE NUMBERS: Concordia has been outscored 76-72 through 23 contests. CC has outscored its opponents 31-28 in the second period, but have been outscored 26-18 in the third. Both teams have netted 21 first-period goals. … CC has scored 17 power-play goals on 92 chances (18.5 %), and have killed off 77 of its opponents 103 man advantages (74.8 %). … Concordia set single-game season highs in goals (7) and points (16) against Marian on Oct. 30, while delivering a season-high 10 assists against St. Olaf on Jan. 27.
