SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: Saint Mary’s heads into its conference rematch against Concordia on Saturday sitting at 11-12-1 overall and 7-8-0 in conference play.
• LAST NIGHT: The Cardinals surrendered seven goals, and managed only a lone first-period tally by Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), as Saint Mary’s dropped a 7-1 decision to Concordia in the first game of the teams’ two-game MIAC series Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.
• PLAYOFF PICTURE: With Friday’s outcome, Concordia is sitting in fourth place in the conference standings with 23 points, while St. Olaf – which beat Gustavus 2-0 Friday evening — is in fifth with 21 points, one more than both Saint Mary’s and Bethel. SMU must win and not have St. Olaf win in regulation to lock up its second straight MIAC Playoff berth.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saturday’s game against Concordia is the second straight home contest for the Cardinals to close out the regular season. … SMU owns a 5-6-0 record on the road this season, while going 7-5-1 at the SMU Ice Arena.
• SPLITSVILLE: The Cardinals’ 7-4 win and 4-1 loss against St. Scholastica last weekend marked the fifth time in the last six weekends that SMU has split its MIAC series. Saint Mary’s also split against Saint John’s, Bethel, Hamline and St. Olaf, while sweeping Gustavus and falling twice to Augsburg.
• OFFENSE IN SYNC: With their seven-goal outburst against St. Scholastica on Feb. 10, the Cardinals have now scored four or more goals in a game nine times this season — including back-to-back four-goal efforts against Gustavus on Dec. 3-4, five-goal showings vs. MSOE on Dec. 10 and Northland on Jan. 6, seven-goal performances against Lawrence on Jan. 3, Saint John’s on Feb. 4, and St. Scholastica last Friday, and a season-high eight-game outburst in beating St. Olaf 8-2 on Jan. 13.
• LONG TIME COMING: The Cardinals’ season-high eight goals in their 8-2 win over St. Olaf on Jan. 13 were the most in a game since SMU netted eight against Hamline on Feb. 23, 2014. … SMU’s seven goals in its 7-3 win over Saint John’s on Feb. 4, meanwhile, were the most the Cardinals had scored against the Johnnies since Jan. 16, 1999, when SMU beat SJU 7-4.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: With his three goals against St. Scholastica on Feb. 10, Brady Lindauer (Cary, Ill.) moved into a tie for the team lead in goals (7) with Nikita Sheberov (Obninsk, Russia). Colin Tushie (Prior Lake, Minn.), Callahan Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), Warner Young (Newberry, Mich.), and Trevor Schroder have all scored six goals, while Thomas Magnavite (Chicago, Ill.), Laudon Poellinger (La Crescent, Minn.), and Bud Winter (St. Louis, Mo.) have each scored five times.
• TOSSING THE HAT x 2: Sheberov netted his first collegiate hat trick against Lawrence on Jan. 2, while Lindauer equaled that feat with his first hatty as a Cardinal against St. Scholastica on Feb. 10 — scoring SMU’s last three goals in its 7-4 win. … The hat tricks by Sheberov and Lindauer mark the first time SMU has had two players score three goals in a game since the 2015-16 season, when the Cardinals had three players record hat tricks.
• DOUBLING UP: Saint Mary’s has had a player score two or more goals in a game six times this season — including twice by Lindauer, who recorded a two-goal game against St. Olaf on Jan. 13 to go along with last Friday’s hat trick vs. St. Scholastica. … Sheberov (3 goals), Winter (2 goals), Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis. / 2 goals), and Tushie (2 goals) have also enjoyed multiple-goal games this season.
• FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL: Saint Mary’s has six players who have scored their first goals in a Cardinal uniform this season: Campion, Tushie, Luke Cioli (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Blake Campbell (Keller, Texas), Jackson Nauss (Maple Plain, Minn.), and Brendan Westbrook (Pine City, Minn.).
• LENDING A HAND: Kellen Tharaldson (Wausau, Wis.) has racked up a team-leading 12 assists, one more than Poellinger, while Young, Magnavite, and Campion have recorded eight assists, and Lindauer, Tushie, and Winter all own seven.
• POINT PRODUCERS: The Cardinals boast nine players who have racked up 10 or more points this season, led by Poellinger and Tharaldson with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Lindauer (14), Young (14), Tushie (13), Magnavite (13), Campion (12), Winter (12), and Sheberov (10) have also reached double digits in points this season.
• LUCKY NO. 3: Lindauer’s hat trick against St. Scholastica on Feb. 10 marked the second time in his career that he has posted a 3+ point night, having also posted a career-high four point night (2 goals, 2 assists) against St. Olaf on Jan. 13. … Sheberov and Campion have also recorded career-high three-point games this season — Sheberov’s coming on three goals against Lawrence on Jan. 2, while Campion picked up a pair of assists to go with his first-period goal against Gustavus on Dec. 2. … Winter collected helpers on three of SMU’s four goals vs. the Gusties on Dec. 2 for his first career three-assist game — and third career three-point night.
• WEEKLY HONORS: After scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists against Lake Forest on Oct. 28-29, Poellinger was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Oct. 31.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Saint Mary’s has used three different goalies this season. Sankner has stopped 299 of the 331 shots he’s faced in 11 appearances en route to a 3.10 GAA and a .903 save percentage, while A.J. Ruskowski (Traverse City, Mich.) has appeared in 13 games — including 11 starts — and owns a 3.64 GAA and .890 save %. Connor Close (Des Moines, Iowa) boasts a 4.96 GAA, .835 save % and has made 76 saves in his four appearances. … Sankner delivered a career-high 45-save effort against Augsburg on Nov. 18, while Ruskowski stopped a season-best 42 shots against St. Olaf on Jan. 13 and Close recorded a career-high 36 saves against Lake Forest on Oct. 29.
• FROM DEFENSE TO OFFENSE: Sankner collected his first collegiate assist, getting the lone helper on Sheberov’s first goal in the second period SMU’s 6-3 win over Lawrence on Jan. 2. … Sankner’s assist is the first by a Cardinal goalie since Nick Nash picked up an assist against Gustavus on Oct. 26, 2018.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Cardinals have played three overtime games this season — beating Bethel 3-2 last Saturday, topping Northland 5-4 on Jan. 6, and battling Lake Forest to a 5-5 draw on Oct. 28.
• STREAKING: The Cardinals had their season-high six-game win streak snapped with their 4-1 loss to UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 7. After opening the season 1-6-1, SMU had rattled off wins over Lawrence (3-1), Gustavus (4-1 & 4-3), MSOE (5-3), Lawrence (6-3), and Northland (5-4 OT). … Saint Mary’s six-game win streak was its longest since winning six in a row during the 2005-06 season.
• CLEAN SHEET: Saint Mary’s was not whistled for a penalty in its 3-1 win over Lawrence on Nov. 22. All told, there were just two penalties called in the nonconference contest, both against the Vikings.
• SCORING FIRST: Saint Mary’s is 8-3-0 when netting the game’s first goal, while going 3-9-1 when its opponent scores first. … The Cardinals were 6-1-0 when netting the game’s first goal a year ago, while going 2-13-1 when their opponent nets the game’s first goal.
• BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: It was a tale of late-game heroics in SMU’s conference-opening series against Hamline on Nov. 4-5. HU scored two goals in the game’s final 3:33 en route to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals in the first game on Nov. 4, with SMU turning the tables in the rematch, scoring twice in a 33-second span in the final two minutes of regulation en route to a 2-1 victory the following evening.
• BY THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s and its opponents have both scored 22 goals in the first period, and SMU has been outscored 33-23 in the second and 35-28 in the third. … Saint Mary’s is 15 of 94 on the power play (16.9 %), while killing off 80 of its opponents’ 99 power-play opportunities (80.8 %). … SMU set season-highs in goals (8), assists (14), and points (22) against St. Olaf on Jan. 13, while its 46 shots on goal against Lawrence on Nov. 22 are also a season high
CONCORDIA COBBERS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cobbers head into their final conference game of the regular-season Saturday against Saint Mary’s sitting at 11-11-2 overall, including a 8-6-1 mark in MIAC action.
• LAST NIGHT: The Cobbers erupted for seven goals in rolling to a 7-1 win over Saint Mary’s in the first game of the teams’ conference series Friday night at the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• HITTING THE ROAD: The Cobbers played their final two regular-season home games last weekend, pushing their record to 5-3-1 at the Cullen Ice Center. CC heads into Saturday’s road matchup against Saint Mary’s sporting a 6-8-1 record on the road.
• NAILBITERS: Concordia has played nine games decided by one goal or less this season — including each of its last four contests. … The Cobbers dropped 4-3 and 1-0 decisions to Augsburg prior to last weekend’s 4-4 tie and 4-3 win over Gustavus.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Joe Harguindeguy enters Saturday’s game against Saint Mary’s as Concordia’s scoring leader with 10 goals, two more than Hanson O’Leary and Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe and three in front of Cole O’Connell and Caden Triggs. Ben Luedtke and Mason Plante are sitting with six goals and Kevin Ness has netted five. … Henkemeyer-Howe scored a season-high three goals against Hamline on Dec. 2.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Concordia boasts five players who have reached double figures in assists this season, led by Liam Haslam with 15 and O’Connell with 14. Plante owns 11 helpers, while Jaret Lalli and Henkemeyer-Howe each boast 10 assists. … O’Connell and Lalli have each posted three-assist games this season — O’Connell’s against St. Olaf on Jan. 28, and Lalli’s vs. Aurora on Dec. 30.
• POINT PRODUCTION: O’Connell has amassed a team-leading 21 points through 24 games. He is one of nine Cobbers who have collected 10 or more points this season, being joined by Harguindeguy (19), Haslam (18), Henkemeyer-Howe (18), Plante (17), Luedtke (12), Triggs (11), O’Leary (11), and Lalli (10). … Henkemeyer-Howe has posted two games with three points, while O’Connell and Lalli have also recorded three-point performances.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: The Cobbers have used four different goalies this season, led by Matt Fitzgerald, who has made 11 appearances (663:31 minutes) and owns a 2.44 goals-against-average and .903 save percentage. Aaron Dickstein (3.65 GAA, .873 save %, 39:15), Jackson Nelson (3.50 GAA, .852 save %, 325:33), and Evan Babekuhl (3.06 GAA, .893 save %, 58:51) have also seen time between the pipes this season. … Fitzgerald has made 252 saves, followed by Dickstein with 165 and Nelson with 109. … Fitzgerald made a season-high 38 saves twice — against Bethel on Jan. 21 and vs. Saint Mary’s on Friday.
• WORKING OVERTIME: CC has played five overtime games this season, going 2-1-2 — the Cobbers beat Bethel (3-2) and Gustavus (4-3), lost to Marian (5-4), and tied Hamline (1-1) and Gustavus (4-4).
• BY THE NUMBERS: Concordia has outscored its opponents 79-77 through 24 contests — including 23-21 in the first and 35-29 in the second. CC has been outscored 26-19 in the third period. … CC has scored 19 power-play goals on 95 chances (20.0 %), and have killed off 82 of its opponents 109 man advantages (75.2 %). … Concordia equaled its season-high with its seven-goal performance against Saint Mary’s on Friday. CC also scored seven goals against Marian on Oct. 30. The Cobbers also set a single-game season highs in points (17) against Saint Mary’s Friday, while delivering a season-high 10 assists against both Saint Mary’s on Friday and vs. St. Olaf on Jan. 27.
