SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference rematch against Saint Benedict on Saturday sitting at 6-13-1 overall, including a 3-9-1 mark in conference play.
• LAST NIGHT: Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.) scored early in the first period, but that would be all the offense the Cardinals would be able to muster in dropping a 3-1 decision to Saint Benedict Friday evening at Ritsche Arena in St. Cloud, Minn.
• ROAD SUCCESS: Four of the Cardinals’ six wins this season have come on the road. Saint Mary’s is sitting at 2-5-1 on its home ice this year, while sporting a 4-8-0 mark away from the Saint Mary’s Ice Arena.
• SPLITSVILLE: The Cardinals’ 2-0 loss and 2-1 OT win over Bethel last weekend marked the second straight two-game conference split, having won (5-0) and lost (6-3) to St. Catherine the previous weekend. SMU has now split three of its six conference series, having also split with Augsburg (W, 4-2; L, 3-2), while being swept by Gustavus (L, 4-0; L, 3-0) and Hamline (3-0; 4-1) and going 0-1-1 against St. Olaf (T, 2-2; L, 2-1).
• WORKING OVERTIME: SMU’s 2-1 win over Bethel last Saturday was its fourth overtime game of the season — going 2-1-1 in those four contests. Along with their 2-1 win over Bethel, the Cardinals also own a 2-1 victory against UW-Stevens Point, while falling to Lake Forest 3-2 and tying St. Olaf. … Saint Mary’s has now played four overtime games in back-to-back seasons.
• A NIGHT TO REMEMBER: Sidney Polzin (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) recorded her first collegiate hat trick and her first career five-point game in SMU’s 5-0 win over St. Catherine on Jan. 20. The hat trick was Saint Mary’s first since Bailey Wendt scored four times against Bethel on Feb. 3, 2018, while her five-point night was the team’s first since Nicole Olson equaled that feat with three goals and two helpers against St. Norbert on Nov. 4, 2011.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Polzin, Kas Kingston (Black Diamond, Alberta), and Taryn Dornself (Somerset, Wis.) all share the team lead in goals with five, one more than Kurkowski and Anna Braun (Mantorville, Minn.). Allie Urlaub (Burnsville, Minn.) has scored three goals, followed by Pierpont, Anne Carmean (Spring Lake Park, Minn.), Leah Parker (Hudson, Wis.), and Taverie Sherner (Maple Grove, Minn.) with two. … SMU’s 40 goals have come from 16 different players.
• FIRST AS A CARDINAL: Saint Mary’s has had five players score their first collegiate goals this season: Sherner, Dornself, Parker, Jordy Wyant (Winnipeg, Manitoba), and Teagan Phillips (Oregon, Wis.).
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: SMU’s eight goals in its 8-0 win over Lawrence on Dec. 10 were scored by eight different players — Dornself, Parker, Braun, Kingston, Kurkowski, Carmean, Katie Devine (Glencoe, Ill.), and Elle Hegdahl (Brookings, S.D.).
• SPREADING THE WEALTH II: Saint Mary’s 10 points in its 4-2 win over Augsburg on Nov. 18 came from 10 different players: Phillips, Sherner, Urlaub, and Polzin scored goals, while Kennedy Kraus (Kasson, Minn.), Ella Ausman (Chippewa Falls, Minn.), Hegdahl, Dornself, Katie Pierpont (Holt, Mich.), and Parker all had assists.
• LENDING A HAND: Polzin enters Saturday’s game against Saint Benedict leading the Cardinals with six assists, one up on Kingston and two in front of Urlaub and Carmean, while Parker, Pierpont, Hegdahl, Kraus, and Sydney Green (East Bethel, Minn.) all have three.
• POINT PRODUCERS: With her five points against St. Catherine on Jan. 20, Polzin became the first Cardinal to reach double digits with 11 points, while Kingston reached 10 points with a goal and an assists against Bethel last Saturday. Dornself and Urlaub are third with seven each, while Kurkowski and Carmean are both sitting with six.
• DOUBLING UP: SMU had four players post multiple-point games against Lawrence on Dec. 10. Devine, Kurkowski, and Kingston all had a goal and an assist, while Polzin had two assists.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Jordan Keeley (St. James, Minn.) and Celeste Rimstad (Richfield, Minn.) have shared the goaltending duties for the Cardinals this season. Keeley has stopped 314 of the 343 shots she’s faced in 13 appearances and owns a 2.76 goals-against-average and .915 save percentage, while Rimstad has recorded 223 saves in her first 11 appearances as a Cardinal, and sports a 1.96 GAA and .927 save %. … Keeley has stopped 30 or more shots in six of her 10 starts this season. … Rimstad has made 30 or more saves in a game twice, including a career-high 40-save showing vs. Hamline Nov. 12.
• A BRICK WALL: Rimstad stopped all 24 shots she faced against St. Catherine on Jan. 20 and has now recorded two shutouts this season — having recorded a 13-save shutout against Lawrence on Dec. 10. … Rimstad had her scoreless minute streak ended at 195:56 minutes, giving up a first-period goal to St. Catherine’s Ellie Skaja at 7:42 of the first period on Jan. 21. It was the first goal the SMU freshman has allowed since a late, third-period goal by Hamline on Nov. 12.
• THROWING UP BLANKS: Keeley and Rimstad both collected shutouts against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10. Keeley kicked out all 15 shots she faced on Dec. 9 for her first shutout of the season, and fourth of her collegiate career, while Rimstad stopped all 13 shots in the rematch the following afternoon for career shutout No. 1.
• BACK-TO-BACK GOOSE EGGS: The Cardinals 3-0 and 8-0 wins over Lawrence on Dec. 9-10 mark the first time since the 2003-04 season in which SMU has posted back-to-back shutouts. SMU did it three times during the 2003-04 season — beating Concordia (3-0) and St. Catherine (5-0); Bethel (3-0 and 5-0); and Hamline 8-0 and 5-0).
• CAREER NIGHT: Keeley stopped a career-high 49 shots in SMU’s 3-2 loss to Augsburg on Nov. 19. The 49 saves were four more than her previous career-best and the most by a Cardinal goalie since Ary Ziakas stopped 55 against Gustavus on Jan. 28, 2022.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: Saint Mary’s finished with 121 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9-10, while holding the Vikings to a combined 28. SMU outshot Lawrence 28-1 in the first period on Dec. 9 and boasted a 26-5 edge in shots in the second period on Dec. 10.
• MAKING THEIR MARK: The Cardinals’ 59 shots on goal against Lawrence on Dec. 9 rank No. 6 all-time, while their 62 shots the following afternoon are tied for No. 3 all-time. The program-record for shots on goal in a game is 80 against St. Olaf on Nov. 11, 2000.
• BY THE NUMBERS: SMU has scored nine goals in the first period, while netting 15 goals in the second and 14 in the third. On the flip side, the Cardinals’ opponents have scored 14 times in the first period, 19 times in the second, and 17 times in the third. … SMU’s four third-period goals against Lawrence on Dec. 10 were a single-period season-high. … The Cardinals recorded season-highs in goals (8), assists (8), points (16), and shots on goal (62) against Lawrence on Dec. 10
SAINT BENEDICT BENNIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Bennies head into their conference rematch against Saint Mary’s sitting at 11-8-0 overall, including an 8-5-0 showing through 12 MIAC contests.
• LAST NIGHT: Saint Benedict scored two goals in the game’s final 1:19 — including an empty-netter with nine seconds to play — as the Bennies dropped Saint Mary’s 3-1 Friday evening at Ritsche Arena in St. Cloud, Minn.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Following this weekend’s games against Saint Mary’s, the Bennies will close out the regular season playing three of their final five contests on the road. CSB is 5-4-0 on its own ice, while sporting a 5-4-0 record away from Ritsche Arena.
• NAILBITERS: With Friday’s 3-1 win over Saint Mary’s, Saint Benedict improved to 8-3 in games decided by two goals or less — including five one-goal victories.
• LIGHTING THE LAMP: Aurora Opsahl’s goal against Saint Mary’s on Friday was her team-leading ninth goal of the season — and second in as many games. Emma Rooks is sitting second on the team with eight goals, followed by Ava Stinnett and Corrine Brown with six, and Jenna Timm with four. … Rooks scored a single-game season-high three goals against St. Scholastica on Nov. 19.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Opsahl and Brown have both reached double digits in assists, with Opsahl amassing a team-high 13 helpers, three more than Brown, while Stinnett is third with eight assists. … Opsahl owns a pair of three-assist games — one against Concordia-Moorhead on Nov. 11 and the other vs. UW-Superior on Nov. 22.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Opsahl’s nine goals and 13 assists give her a team-leading 22 points. Brown (16), Stinnett (14), and Rooks (11) have also recorded 10 or more points this season. … Rooks and Opsahl have both recorded two, three-point games, while Brown owns one. … Rooks enters Saturday’s rematch with Saint Mary’s having recorded at least one point in six straight contests.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: The Bennies have used three different goalies this season, led by Ally Frantzick, who has compiled a 2.40 goals-against-average and .905 save percentage in 16 appearances (926:53 minutes). Kate Moffat owns a 1.89 GAA and .930 save percentage in three starts (158:24) and Donelle Decker boasts a 2.00 GAA and .895 save percentage in her lone start (60:00). … Frantzick has amassed a team-leading 354 saves, with Moffat adding 66 and Decker 17. … Frantzick, who stopped 36 of Saint Mary’s 37 shots on Friday, made a season-high 40 saves against Augsburg on Jan. 28. … Frantzick has recorded two shutouts this season — stopping 23 shots in a 1-0 win over Concordia (Wis.) on Nov. 5 and adding a 13-save shutout in blanking Concordia-Moorhead on Nov. 12.
• WORKING OVERTIME: The Bennies have played four overtime games this season, going 2-2-0 in those four contests. CSB owns OT wins over Bethel (3-2) and Hamline (4-3), while falling to UW-Eau Claire (4-3) and Augsburg (3-2).
• BY THE NUMBERS: Saint Benedict has outscored its opponents 53-45, including 21-15 in the second period and 16-8 in the third. CSB’s opponents hold a 20-14 scoring edge in the game’s opening stanza. … The Bennies have converted on 9 of 60 power-play opportunities (15.0 %), while killing off 69 of 84 of their opponents powerplays (83.1 %). … CSB recorded season-highs in goals (6), assists (10), and points (16) against UW-Superior on Nov. 22. The Bennies equaled their single-game season-high with six goals against St. Scholastica on Nov. 19. … Saint Benedict recorded a season-high 62 shots on goal against Concordia (Wis.) on Nov. 5.
