WINONA, Minn. — It was a break-out season for both
Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.) and
Addison Hochevar (Lake Geneva, Wis.) in 2023, as the duo both put together career years in providing the Saint Mary's baseball team a rather lethal one-two punch — Coyle with his bat and Hochevar with his arm.
Â
And the pair were rewarded for their efforts on Monday when the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference unveiled its 2023 post-season awards, with both being named to the 33-man All-MIAC Team.
Â
Coyle and Hochevar weren't the only Cardinals in the MIAC spotlight, either, as
Riley Bauman (Stratford, Wis.) was an honorable-mention All-MIAC selection.
Â
Coyle, who started all 20 conference games, closed out his sophomore campaign going 23-for-62 with six doubles and three home runs en route to a team-best .371 batting average. Coyle also compiled a team-best 18 RBIs, while sporting a .613 slugging percentage and .474 on-base percentage.
Â
In SMU's 32 overall games this season, Coyle sported a team-leading .375 batting average (39-for-104), delivered 10 doubles, one triple and three home runs, while driving in 29 and finishing with a .577 slugging percentage and .485 on-base percentage. As good as he was at the plate, Coyle was equally as impressive in the field, committing just one error in 255 chances at first base (249 putouts and six assists).
Â
With Coyle doing his part for the Cardinals with his bat, Hochevar was the ace of the Saint Mary's pitching staff. The junior left-hander went 3-3 with a 2.55 earned-run-average in a team-leading 35 1/3 innings pitched in conference play. Hochevar walked just eight batters and struck out 31, while posting his first two collegiate complete games among his six conference starts.
Â
Overall, Hochevar matched his career high with 10 starts, going 3-5 with a 2.65 ERA in 54 1/3 innings pitched. He finished the year striking out a team-leading 52 batters — giving him 142 strikeouts in his three-year collegiate career — and pitched at least five innings in nine of his 10 starts.
Â
After appearing in just three games a year ago, Bauman was a regular in the Cardinals' lineup this season, starting all 20 conference games, going 22-for-67 with four doubles, one triple and three home runs en route to a .328 MIAC batting average. He scored 21 runs, and finished with a .552 slugging percentage and .400 on-base percentage.
Â
The only Cardinal to start all 35 games, Bauman finished the year with a .336 batting average (41-for-122), with six doubles, two triples, and a team-high five home runs. He also drove in 26 runs, boasted a .541 slugging percentage and .407 on-base percentage, and owned a .944 field percentage — committing just three errors on 54 chances in center field.
Â
Concordia's Andy Gravdahl was the recipient of the Max Molock Player of the Year award, while Mitch Casperson of Gustavus was tabbed the Mike Augustin Pitcher of the Year. Sam Chutkow of Carleton was named the MIAC Rookie of the Year and Concordia's Chris Coste was selected the Jim Dimick Coach of the Year.
