WINONA, Minn.— If the Saint Mary's University volleyball team was feeling any ill effects from their 3-2 loss to UW-La Crosse earlier in the day, the Cardinals certainly didn't show it in their second match against Luther.
Â
Despite their two-hour marathon against the Eagles, Saint Mary's looks fresh and well-rested — much to the dismay of the visiting Norse.
Â
Saint Mary's got 10 kills and nine digs from
Ciarra McNally (Lewiston, Minn.), 27 assists from
Faith VanErp (Sartell, Minn.), and 11 digs from Allison Wu (Woodbury, Minn.), as the Cardinals stream-rolled over the Norse 3-0 at the Saint Mary's Gym.
Â
The Cardinals left little doubt in the opening set, racing out to an early 6-0 lead. Luther would whittle the lead down to two, 11-9, but Saint Mary's answered with a 10-1 run to push the advantage back to 11, 21-10 — and the Cardinals would coast to a 25-16 victory.
Â
There would be more coasting in the second set — but it took the Cardinals a little longer to get to cruising speed this time around. Saint Mary's spotted the Norse an early 6-2 lead, before coming storming back, closing the set on a 9-3 run en route to its second straight 25-16 win.
Â
And as good as the Cardinals were in the first two sets, they were even more dominating in the third, collecting seven of the set's first 10 points for an early 7-3 lead — a lead that would grow to double figures, as SMU completed the sweep with a 25-15 Set 3 victory.
Â
The Cardinals (6-3 overall) are right back in action this weekend, heading to Dubuque, Iowa, to take part in the Loras Invitational. SMU will face Coe (5 p.m.) and Loras (7 p.m.) on Friday, before squaring off against Monmouth (10 a.m.) and the Univeristy of Dubuque (2 p.m.) the following day.
